We arrived a little too early so we left our bags at the office which was very convenient. Everybody was very helpful & friendly. After a walk around Montreux we came back to check-in which only took us about 5’ great! Our suite was quite pleasant with a beautiful garden right infront of the lakeside. We reserved for wellness so we looked for our bathrobes but we couldn’t find any. Some cool english folks told us that we had to get them at the reception… That was a bit disappointing because we had to go back and get them… Wellness part is very disappointing and old. It‘s nothing like wellness really… My girlfriend wanted to take a hot bath but there was no plug to stop the water from draining… So we just showered and those showers are so old that I refused to wash my hair because it would have took ages! The hallways smell like 500 years… And the walls in the rooms are very thin… I was a bit disappointed for what we paid!

Hypercomplicated. I get it. It’s COVID. But still. 45min just for checking in. Temperature check every day. Breakfast in the room. Pool access just for an hour on reservation of there is space. Really? I have seen much more reasonable rules in all other hotels I have been visiting during COVID. But then more generally also: not a 4 star place. Long winding way to the pool area. Super stinky hallways. Not sure what is done down there. All in all a bit run down. Conclusion: here for 2 nights only. If we would stay longer we would leave right away. Just not worth it. Probably a nice place many years ago. But likely those times will not come back. A pity.

Comfortable bed, extra pillows in the cupboards, enormous room, beautiful view but balcony has no sun in the morning, warm. However it really is run down and that is not made up for in charm and therefore it is very overpriced. Huge old bath (but no plug so you can’t enjoy it) with a shower attachment over it that you have to hold in your hand to wash your hair. So many doors off the room that led to other closed doors! However you can hear people in neighbouring rooms. With COVID-19 it was nice to be able to have the breakfast in your room (09.30 latest time you can have it) and the sparrows joining you on the balcony are sweet! You can hear the trains but not too bad. Cannot get hold of reception or housekeeping on the phone late in the evening. Covid-19 measures were good and reassuring. Staff courteous and helpful - you can park free on the quiet street outside until 07.00 and with a blue disk timer can leave it free there for a further 3 hours. Montreux city tax is exorbitant at 8 CHF per person per day but I guess the city has to play for the flowers on the lakeside somehow. Breakfast is OK but nothing special (I have uploaded photos). Would probably look for another hotel next time also with a lake view balcony rather than this one.

Took a short break in Montreux over the Xmas/New Year holidays but most (nice) hotels were closed due to Covid. This one seemed OK on paper... This was obviously once a great, grand hotel. To call it a 'Grand' hotel today is a joke. It hasn't been renovated in several decades... it's run-down, faded, tatty, smelly and badly run (reminding us of "Fawlty Towers"). Firstly, let's be clear: this is half hotel (Excelsior), half health farm / hospital (Biotonus). It has a real identity crisis, with normal hotel guests mixing with medical guests (weird). And also such a curious collection of smells; some good (floral in lobby) but mainly bad (combination of sulphur, smoke, hospital). And a curious, complicated and confusing series of corridors, staircases and dead-ends. We weren't lucky with the receptionist on arrival - rude, moody, unhelpful - who was repeatedly exasperated when we asked basic questions... so in the end, we just didn't bother interacting. Often reception wasn't even manned by anyone. Other times they were OK. Our room was small, cold, dated, tatty and not very clean. Outside it was below 0 degrees and yet the radiator was set to the lowest setting... and the reverse air-con didn't heat above 19 degrees. The bed was rock hard and the pillows as thin as air. Soundproofing through the interconnecting door was non-existent. The bathroom even worse: unclean, tatty, needs completely re-done. Felt dirtier after a shower then before. Plus the broken shower head sprayed water everywhere. The hotel carpets are all worn and dirty. Pool towels were just hand towels some days; smelly bathroom towels the next. The list goes on. It was just terrible. And so sadly depressing (you could really imagine how nice it was 20-30 years ago). And really there was no point in complaining because who would you complain to? The receptionist?!! FYI It's located a little out of the downtown but perfectly walkable along the lakefront. Was there anything good? The only redeeming feature was the restaurant. Both the service and the food were great - and also good value. The guy running it was great, so flexible and helpful. Really such a shame that a great restaurant and staff is attached to such a terrible hotel. Upon leaving, they tried to charge us again for the accommodation (which had been pre-paid). A fitting end to a terrible stay.

I would really recommend this hotel. It was our second time staying here and we loved it! Perfect location in walking distance to the centre of the town and lake. Friendly staff, big swimming pool, relaxing spa where we both got 30 minute massages (well worth it). Every room has a lake view where you can get your breakfast delivered up as room service, making for the perfect morning views ( attaches b is a picture) We also ate in the restaurant this time and the food and it’s presentation was amazing. All round a very relaxing and pleasant stay. We will definitely be back for our third time!
