The Westin Excelsior, Florence stands out as a luxurious sanctuary with a reputation for elegance and a homely yet upscale vibe, according to many guests. The hotel's cleanliness and lavish amenities, such as its opulent decor and rooftop bar with breathtaking views, consistently earn praise. While some reviewers find the rooms spacious, others suggest the bathrooms could benefit from an update. Despite its prime location for exploring Florence, a few travelers question the value, citing the high cost relative to the amenities offered. Service at the hotel is generally celebrated for its warmth and professionalism, though it's not without occasional criticism.

We are a family of five who stayed for 8 nights over the Thanksgiving Holiday. This Westin is well located right on the Arno, close to the train station and Uffizi and ~ 15 minute walk to the Duomo.

Our welcome was warm. Our room was not ready upon our morning arrival, but we were able to have breakfast at the restaurant and they gave us water and a place to wait.

The rooms are beautiful and exactly what we requested (connecting rooms with a king in one and three twin beds in the other). We requested a double with a rollaway. The rollaway was high quality and as comfortable as the permanent beds. Lighting was excellent and layered. Room temperature control was easy and effective. We had a view of the Arno, which was so close it seemed like you could jump into it. There were plenty of outlets. The WiFi at the hotel was an issue and wasn’t accessible every where and at times was not strong enough in the rooms.

One room had a large bathroom with a large double vanity. The other bathroom was smaller, but still well appointed, bright and the amenities we needed.

We ate breakfast every morning in the restaurant (they do not have an executive lounge). It was a large breakfast to appeal to the tastes of their large international clientele.

Besides the wonderful accommodations, fantastic views (roof top restaurant especially) and good location, the staff took really good care of us. They really paid attention and customized the service to what you needed. We came back late one night and asked if the front desk had any water. They did not and we said okay, but five minutes later someone showed up at the door with a bottle for everyone in the room. Another day we had a late afternoon tour scheduled and I knew that to keep everyone in good spirits I needed to get a hearty snack in them. We had to be out the door in less than twenty minutes. The bar tender in the lounge quickly brought cheese, meat, vegetable and salad plates. As more people showed up he accommodated the larger group and everyone left with full bellies ready for the long tour. These are small examples, but overall the entire staff was warm and welcoming.

Every recommendation of the concierge staff was excellent. They helped us make the most of our stay.

They were also decorating for the Holidays, which only added to the beauty of the hotel. We will definitely return here the next time we are in Florence.

If I could do half stars, this is a 4.5. I round up for the overall rating.

Stayed here for three nights over the holidays.
Hotel is in a great location. Walking distance to all the popular spots. About 0.8 miles walk down the river. Was an easy and fun walk.

We chose this hotel as they were able to guarantee us connecting rooms.

Check-in was great, staff was friendly, acknowledged Marriott Titanium status, and more importantly, acknowledged the children and welcomed them with goodie bags. Actually taking the time to come around the counter to say hi to the kids and ask how they were. I love it when hotels make that effort.

Rooms were great. We didn’t have a view, but the rooms were quite large, and connecting rooms made it perfect for the four of us.
Great perk, we had a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us.

Really all was excellent. Half star mark down was the breakfast.
Breakfast was a bit of a mess. Very long wait times for a table. They had a coffee station while waiting, which was nice, but even when seated, on the last day they simply ran out of food for the buffet.

This was absolutely the perfect stay at a historic hotel (previously a monastery in the 11th century). A special shoutout to Stefano for being especially accommodating and going the extra mile to ensure my grandfather (wheelchair) and family would have adjoining rooms. We were upgraded to rooms with the best view in the city of the river, city skyline, and landmarks that was breathtaking at sunset and sunrise. There were so many extra nice touches to the trip (again courtesy of Stefano) such as wine, cookies, fruit, and chocolate that made it more special. The rooms were exquisite, large, well furnished, and beautiful. The staff were able to add a third smaller bed to each room as well. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was delicious and really had something for everyone: scrambled eggs, mushrooms, broccoli, chicory, ham, bacon, sausages, salmon, eggrolls, meats/cheeses, fruits, pastries, yogurt, bread, cereal, juices, omelet station, etc. The concierge and lobby staff were great at getting us taxis and helping with luggage. The location of the hotel is right on the Arno river and within walking distance of the Duomo, Galleria dell'Accademia, Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, etc. and also around a 9 minute walk from the train station (or very quick taxi ride). There are multiple restaurants, grocery stores, and gelaterias near the hotel. We have been to Florence twice, and will definitely be back again. I highly, highly recommend the Westin Excelsior, which truly deserves its 5 star rating!

My wife and I spent five nights here and absolutely loved our experience. We were upgraded to a corner room so we had views of the river, absolutely loved the rooftop restaurant and bar for both morning and evening meals, and as far as location goes, were less than 15 minutes away from everything in Florence. The concierge was fantastic as well and coordinated two day trips for us out to Tuscany (one for wine tasting and one for seeing several small towns). I also feel this was a luxurious and nice as the St. Regis (literally across the courtyard from the Westin) and can't imagine why I would stay anywhere else. Thank you so much!

Over the past 50 years, I’ve been fortunate to travel to Europe hundreds of times and, have stayed in the best hotels. However, once again, the Westin Excelsior, Florence exceeded all expectations. If you do decide to travel to Florence, there’s no thinking or considering to be done. Your stay at the Westin Excelsior you realize why this becomes your home away from home, as it has been mine and my family’s now for several years.

The positive attributes to this hotel are endless. However, let’s focus on the key elements that one would look for when staying at a five-star establishment.

The Westin Excelsior provides all the key elements one is looking for to include clean, renovated, well appointed, oversize hotel rooms with proper air conditioning, ventilation, a staff, all around that is completely professional, and will respect all of your concerns and wishes, a fantastic location to everything, and of course, the only hotel in Florence with a penthouse bar overlooking this historic monumental city

I do want to point out that the front desk behind the scenes individuals will do whatever is possible to help accommodate your needs, for us it was adjoining hotel rooms.

Then there is the most dynamic group of concierge professionals you will find in Florence, who not only have a pulse on everything and anything you need, but happen to be a group of gentlemen that you enjoy their company just sitting and talking about life, as I so thoroughly enjoyed every single day of my trip

Bottom line… The Westin Excelsior is indeed a 5+ star hotel that I hate to admit it, has no faults

To all my friends and family at the Westin Excelsior have a happy healthy and safe new year and, we look forward to seeing you again same time next year till then, Chin-chin La Familia!! Rob Stone

This hotel was a highlight of our first visit to Florence. Walked into a beautiful room with champagne and a balcony overlooking the Arno river. The interior of this hotel is classic Florence with ornate and traditional Italian flair. We opted for the breakfast buffet which was one of the best. Omelette station and a vast assortment of meat/grains/pastries plus everything else you can think of. The service was outstanding. Concierge helped with restaurant reservations, train transfers and navigating through the city. The rooftop bar had the most beautiful views of the sunset every night. My daughter said the fitness center was amazing. The rooms was large for 3 of us ( one king and a twin ). Large bathroom and all the amenities you would need. The black out curtains allowed us to sleep soundly along with the very comfortable beds. The location was central to everywhere we needed to be and never felt it was too far from anything. Every staff we encountered were courteous and friendly. I was embarrassed how little we knew of their language since they all seemed to be versed in English. I hope to visit Florence again soon and will be staying at the Excelsior for sure!

The best thing about the Westin Florence is the concierge - great suggestions for meals and tips around the city. Location also excellent, and the building itself is gorgeous.

We stayed in a larger room and it was beautiful, though there were a couple of water stains on the ceiling. Water pressure not great, but this is not unexpected in historic centers in Europe.

The breakfast buffet was expensive but convenient, with a variety of cuisines, though things such as ordering omelettes took a long time (didn't show up the first morning but got better as the week went on).

Fitness room is small but a bonus feature.

This hotel was a perfect place to start our trip!

The location, right on the Arno River, was perfect for walking to all the major sites.

It had the old-world Italian style we were looking for and everything was clean and well-maintained. Our room was big and comfortable - all the amenities we wanted (and expect of a Westin hotel). The roof top bar/restaurant was unbeatable! Great view, service, and food/drinks.

The staff was beyond helpful. Two days before our trip, we realized we booked the wrong dates and they were swift to help and set us on the right track. The concierge arrange the BEST dinner reservations across the river and suggested perfect places to pick up quick bites during the day.

The hotel is gorgeous and the location is fantastic. Our room was incredible, but the bathroom door in relation to the toilet was hard to navigate if you are a middle of the night visitor. The shower also leaked onto the floor as we couldn't fully seal the door. Same with the closet door. It wouldn't stay closed and when it opened the light came on. We had to right the door shut at night. The bed and actual room was perfect, the window onto the piazza was such a great touch. High ceilings and plenty of room to move around.

Service was good, I would have thought maybe a bit more attentive, but still good. Concierge was very helpful. Their Covid approach to the fitness center was odd. One person could reserve the fitness area for an hour block. However, even if they didn't show up, the room was unused. Somehow is was always blocked but no one was ever in there. Probably a Westin policy that just didn't work as planned.

The rooftop bar has an amazing view. The drinks and food were average, so we went once and then moved on to other bars and views for the rest of our trip.

Breakfast was about 26e per person. And given the reputation of the hotel, I was a bit surprised that when I went to the omelet bar, they poured the egg mixture into a bowl and microwaved it. Service was good, however.

The front desk staff and location make this hotel a must stay. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Duomo and sits on the river Arno.

As a Marriott Titanium member I had a few options in Florence but this was absolutely the right choice. The level of hospitality is immense and the proximity to attractions is just wonderful.

It is a classic hotel in a historic building so a slight refurbishment of the rooms would make it even better but as it is, I’d still recommend it (especially at half the price of the St Regis across the street).

Hi Catherine, I did the same as what Mary and her husband did. If you were going to be spending 866 Euro per night or 107,500 BonVoy points per night, I don't think the hotel would have any issues including breakfast as part of your stay. I must say though. There are lots Westins and This One. It is a very Sophisticated Hotel that is aimed to please the top end of the spectrum. I am sure you will enjoy it. I have stayed in similar hotels using points. Being an Ambassador Elite does open some special doors. All the best.
