We have just returned from a memorable stay in this lovely hotel. The staff are exceptional. Everyone seems to love their job and everyone has a friendly word for you. The rooms are quiet and clean and the views were amazing over the rooftops and down into the valley. The spa is lovely and very particular, with vaulted brick ceilings which all adds to the ancient atmosphere of the Monastero. We chose this hotel because we needed some peace and quiet. Mission accomplished. It's a haven of peace and beautiful surroundings. I definitely would recommend it.

I recently visited Cortona with my daughter. Everything about our visit at Monastero di Cortona was excellent. We planned our trip late and did not rent a car. The wonderful front desk staff assisted me in our arrival and when our train was late they were very receptive and helped rearrange our taxi they had booked for us. A special thank you to Chiara who was so helpful! Our room, the hotel and grounds were perfect. We enjoyed breakfast included in our rate as well as afternoon cocktails prior to going out to dinner. The hotel recommended several restaurants and we very much enjoyed La Bucaccia. The Monastero really was our favorite hotel we visited this trip and very much enjoyed lovely Cortona.

We have frequented Monastero di Cortona's sister hotels Villa di Piazzano and Hotel Barocco many times and were disappointed when we couldn't get a reservation at Villa di Piazzano due to them being fully booked, but our disappointment quickly disappeared when we discovered how breathtaking Monastero di Cortona is.
The location of the hotel is perched above the town of Cortona and easy walking distance into town for lunch/dinner, as well as hiking around the town.
The arrival at the hotel via car, and parking, is not for the faint of heart, however, after the first time of parking in the garage and understanding how to enter/exit the town correctly it's not that daunting or difficult.
First impression is how incredible the architecture of the hotel is upon entering the lobby, second impression is equally how impressive and courteous the service is from the staff. We were promptly greeted by Julia who gave us a tour of the hotel and took us to our room. She was always willing and available to make accommodations for us and answer any questions, as were all the ladies at the front desk, and the service really puts this hotel at a 5 star level. The manager at breakfast service was very professional and always available to answer/attend to requests.
Our room was large and spacious, very clean, and we enjoyed the unique character of the restored architecture throughout the property. The only minor downside was that we didn't find the AC to be super strong so the room was a bit warm at night, but we understand the construction limitations in a 500-600 year old building.
The courtyard and pool area was a perfect place to spend time starting our day with (an exception) breakfast, as well as having afternoon appertivo before heading into town for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed booking the spa and sauna/steam room facilities, this is a must-do for visitors - the indoor pool is an experience and setting not to be missed.
This was our fourth stay in Cortona and we joke that each time we visit we extend our stay further from the previous visit, but it's something very tempting to do when next we return to Cortona!

My family stayed at Monastero from 9/1-9/4. We were originally booked at another property but I felt Monastero was a better fit for us being in city centre. I knew immediately upon arrival I made the right choice! We received an extremely warm welcome from Carolina. The reception area is beautiful. A nice cold towel and a welcome drink. We enjoyed a cocktail outside on their beautiful patio while waiting for our rooms to be ready. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and well appointed. We did not have to ask for anything to be brought to the room, housekeeping always refreshed the items twice daily. We used the minibar and it was always restocked. Due to the location, after unpacking, we were able to head right out the door to explore Cortona and gave lunch. Now there is a hill you must walk up on your return. My parents are older but they were fine.
Prior to arrival Carolina and Iulia had taken care of all of our tours, dinner and lunch reservations. They are amazing women! One last minute request was handled late in the evening on their end. We were so impressed with them. We never had to worry about finding a place to eat. Cortona was very busy and all restaurants were busy. We were spoiled at this hotel as we never received this service or welcome again at any property on our two week vacation to date in Florence of Rome. This means a lot.
We enjoyed cocktails on their terrace each evening with Claudio and watched the beautiful sunsets. The breakfast was also very nice and the best one we have had as well, a nice spread.
Do not hesitate to book this property!

We've just spent the most relaxing week at this gorgeous hotel with genuine 5 star service. Our spacious Deluxe Room with terrace was beautiful with the most comfortable bed. We appreciated the option for a late breakfast until 11am (brunch for us) which was delicious, substantial and with plenty of choice; service was impeccable. Every single member of staff was friendly, helpful and so professional - a truly excellent team. The spa was lovely and definitely worth booking.
Cortona had a wonderful atmosphere with more to offer than we expected; to the extent that we only used our hire car once and decided we preferred Cortona! We enjoyed daily walks and the choice of high quality restaurants was superb, which were easy to book through reception or in person.
If driving, a small car is essential; we'd recommend booking the hotel garage rather than the public car park as competition for spaces was intense! We would definitely stay here again and because we didn't use our hire car we would use the hotel's shuttle service instead - it would have been half the price of hiring the car and parking it!

We chose this for a pre-cruise stay rather than the traditional stay in Rome. We had visited Cortona 3 years ago and thought it would be a great place to unwind. Glad we did. Upgraded to a suite by the pool, it was excellent. The room was immaculate and tastefully decorated, no standard hotel furnishings. The towels are all monogrammed and quite fluffy. Very quiet, did not hear anyone although the hotel was nearly full. As it was mid-70s in October, we had a wonderful lunch by the pool when we arrived. Note, we could have ordered a single sandwich and split it. On our first night in town, a five minute walk, we were returning and walked by a beautiful lobby with a fantastic chandelier. We were sneaking a picture when we realized it was our hotel. Breakfast was served in a large room where the renovation uncovered 500 year old frescoes. Definitely not your average hotel dining room. Service and food were fantastic. They do not serve dinner as you come to Cortona for the many, diverse restaurants. Make sure to follow their driving instructions or you could end up on a very tiny path instead of a road. Great stay!

We traveled throughout Italy and agreed this was our favorite stay of all. The service/staff is super and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The beds are fluffy with white bedding and the bathroom is also clean and generously sized. The breakfast in the courtyard was very special. Not sure why this isn’t considered a Five Star hotel. The rest of our stay was at five star accommodations but none measured up to our experience here.

We stayed at the Monastero di Cortona for 6 nights and we were absolutely astonished at the quality of the accommodations AND the level of attentiveness and hospitality by the whole staff (especially Raimondo, Carolina, and Susanna). They made us feel like royalty. Our room (the classic room vs the larger supreme or suite) happened to be a little small, but we had plenty of closet space. The room and bathroom were pristine. Breakfast was superb. We ate in the open air courtyard as well as in the dining room.

We also indulged in the spa and it was magical. The indoor grotto pool is over the top with relaxing lighting and really neat whirlpool areas.

If our travels ever bring us back to Cortona (and I hope so because it's a charming hilltop Tuscan village), we will DEFINITELY book the Monastero again.

I rarely take the time to leave reviews, and I am also suspicious when reading online reviews because frankly, regardless of what people say, the anonymity makes a review stale in my opinion. My experience at the Monastero, however, was so rewarding and meaningful, that I feel the need to this time.

A little background on me, I am actually Italian and American, born and raised in Rome, then came to America later on in life. I travel significantly for work and with my family on vacations, and have been fortunate to stay at some amazing hotels all over the world.

My experience at the Monastero was akin to my experiences at 7 star Heritage hotels in India. Every single detail in the hotel was meticulously planned, cultivated and nurtured. The beauty of the Monastero, was breathtaking and the manner in which all the modern renovations were made was true to the aesthetic origins of such places, in this case a very, very, very old monastery perched on the higher part of Cortona center.

The position was perfect for gazing into the Val Di Chiana valley during the routinely awesome sunsets that swept across the valley turning it all into a burning orange spectacle. I saw this scene from the pool area, from the balcony off my room, and from all windows throughout the hotel facing that way. Watching those sunsets because a daily ritual for us. Even my kids (21 & 24) paid attention.

The pool was a God send. We happened to be there for 4 nights with average temps in the high 90s and, given the vertically inclined nature of the town, we hot and exhausted often. The cold salted infinity pool was a life saver. Having such a pool in the middle of the town center is an added bonus as I like to be in town centers when traveling in Italy rather than in a casale or villa in the countryside. The AC in the rooms was also very adequate, especially given the heat wave. Functional AC in Italy, even Europe in general for that matter, is often not something to be taken for granted. I don't care about being considered "Americanized" for my attention to AC as I like to feel cool and fresh after walking all day in 100 degree weather.

The Staff and service at the hotel was in no way different from what you would expect at a great 5star. I was surprised this was a 4 star hotel in fact. The staff was always eager to help, provided great suggestions, were super pleasant to chat with, and overall ran a really tight operation. This is the sort of place where you feel alone and anonymous while there, but never feel like anything is missing or available thanks to the operation. They were definitely extremely professional and prepared to meet high expectations.

I was in Cortona to look at apartments, While we ultimately decided not to buy there, I regretted leaving the hotel and know I will return often in the future.

I rarely write reviews but want to call out this hotel as it's of an exceptional standard. We stayed for one night and wish we could have stayed longer. From arrival to departure the whole experience was of the highest quality. A special mention for the attentive, efficient and charming staff - Carolina and her concierge colleague from Rome - as well as Raimundo, the Maitre D for the bar, breakfast and lunch - who all made us feel like royalty. The rooms and bathroom are well designed (converted from a Convent) very clean, luxurious, modern with a very comfortable bed, and (from ours) a breathtaking view. Breakfast was copious, fresh orange juice and a large range of hot and cold choices. My wife had a massage in the spa which she said was first rate. Cortona is a beautiful town, and we absolutely loved this hotel. It'a place where they care about quality, and get the details absolutely right. Can't wait to return.

nb Cortona is built on a steep hillside, and you have to walk 200m uphill or so to get to the hotel. The hotel has an underground carpark on site, but call the hotel in advance for precise instructions as Cortona streets are narrow and the satnav gets confused.

Answer from Giuseppe Alfano
Dear Meergreek, thank you for the enquires. As far as the plunge pool area, we do not provide any sunbed around the pool area and is not permitted to lie down on towels on the grass. The Monastero di Cortona Hotel & Spa is a brand new hotel made by a complete renovation of an historical building (a monastery) and we do not have a terrace where you may lay on the sun. We have the Plunge Pool where our Customers may cool down during hot afternoons for a brief relaxition. Concerning the drawers, we have them in some of them i.e. in the Suite or in one of our Junior Suite.
