This is a fine hotel that is handy to the station and the ferry. The staff were friendly, the breakfast was good. Though personally I would prefer calm music with breakfast and not the disco that is currently playing. This hotel has the best shower in Sicily.

Stay here for 1 night, very centrally located hotel. Garage is very convenient, impeccable staff always serving with a smile and very helpful. Hotel is undergoing refurbishment from outside but didn’t bother us. Rooms are very big and comfortable but need some upgrade for a 4 star hotel. Breakfast was very good. All in all very good stay for the price paid and if in the area won’t hesitate to stay again in same hotel

An excellent 3 star hotel and good value with large rooms and a great breakfast. Fresh fruit and pastries. Bathroom is a little tight like many in Italy but manageable with walk in shower. A must for mature travellers.

We stayed 5 nights in this hotel on an extended holiday in Sicily. This hotel was located close to the centre of the city close to cruise terminal close to train station and close to all amenities. The staff were very friendly and offered great assistance for any information that we required. The room was very spacious and clean. The breakfast was more than adequate and a good variety. Overall this hotel was very good value for money and I would recommended it to anybody visiting Messina

Let's face it some places are truly stuck in time. Royal Palace fits well in the category. I was expecting Gloria Gaynor, the Supremes or John Travolta to be seen through the halls.
It's undoubtedly vintage, HOWEVER the charme and kindness of its staff is second-to-none, honestly! Furthermore is thoroughly clean and well 'preserved'. The tiles in the bathroom are original, give it another decade or so and could aspire to be categorised as 'antiques', but the bedroom's floors and mattress are new and immaculate.
Special note the breakfast: well above the national average with its fresh pastries , soy and rice milks and lots of seasonal fruit to choose from, amongst other things.
Come and dive in the 70's it's not that bad for a night or so.

A beautiful old hotel that has seen better days. Slightly worn around the edges with dirty carpets and bumpy elevators, but the rooms were large and clean. The furniture and wooden wainscoating in the rooms were also impressive and of good quality. Service was professional, but not overly friendly. Breakfast was very nice with a large selection including scrambled eggs and coffee made to order. Only a short walk to shops and restaurants, and about a 15 minute walk to the Doumo.

This hotel turned out to be old and stale, and in contrast to the photos on the site. As you enter the hotel, you can just smell the stale air and we knew instantly that we made a mistake of choosing this hotel.

The location was in really seedy and run-down part of the town. The side streets were dirty and messy and didn't feel safe to walk at night.

If you have a car, there is a car park beneath the hotel, and the entrance is in the back of of the hotel. The steep incline (of at least 45 degrees) and very LOW ceiling to get into the car park, takes a bit of bravery to drive down and up. We were in Taormina for a couple of days earlier, so I was used to driving up and down steep inclines but I didn't expect the entrance to the car park to be this challenging.
My little rental car Fiat 500 struggled to get out of the car park; at full throttle and 1st gear it couldn't drive up the ramp (with just me in the car). Had to roll back down and then drive up with speed to make it up the ramp.
Also, there was no direct access to the hotel from the car park, so you had to walk up the steep ramp, walk around the block (past a pile of rubbish on the corner of the streets).
My Sicilian friends looked in horror when I told them where we were staying and mentioned that I chose the worst hotel in Messina: they should know, they live there. And I couldn't agree more.
I can't write about the breakfast because, frankly I can't recall what we had since obviously it must have been so unremarkable.
