Wonderful visit with a tour of the farm and we learned so much - our guide Anna Murgia from Casa Sanna in Mogorella took us to this wonderful place. Exquisite homemade food and a farm with great values.

We stayed here two nights in July and don't understand all the positive reviews. The rooms are overpriced and full of mosquitos and not clean, while when we arrived the room was also full of flies. We were with 4 (2 adults and 2 children, 3 and 5 years) and payed 90 Euros a night, it definitely was not value for money. Also it is not in a central location, it took us 20 minutes to Oristano and 45 min to the beach. It is nuts they charge 12 euros for the 'dinosaur theme park' which is only a small area with some dinosaurs and explanation. For lunch or diner you can stop by, but when we were there no other people visited for lunch or diner so expect to be alone. We would never recommend the place and suggest the owners to improve drastically, lower their prices and learn some english.

I have such mixed feelings about this Agriturismo,  which we chose on the basis of reviews below and primarily the glowing ones about how other reviewers' kids loved the animals. The positives: this is a farm with a variety of animals - horses, donkeys,  pigs, goats, cows, etc (although unlike previous reviewers our kids weren't invited to help feed the animals); the small bungalow rooms are quite spacious, clean and newly built and the beds aren't uncomfortable; there is a small playground with swings and a slide for small children to enjoy; the Agriturismo is run more like a hotel and the whole enterprise employs a lot of people, and I think that supporting the local community is an important part of the Agriturismo experience. The negatives : the restaurant isn't cheap and the food is pretty basic. For the same price we've eaten amazing meals in restaurants in Sardinia. Maybe it's because they have a lot of overhead costs and not a lot of diners. The food wasn't bad: although the pastas were tasteless, their own made cheeses, hams and roasts were pretty good. The strange thing though was that on each of the three nights we were there we were served different food to the tables of Italians around us. This wouldn't be so strange if there wasn't a set menu. On the last night we asked if we too could have the starter plates of ham and cheese, oh and some dessert...although they still "forgot" to serve us one of the pastas. This Agriturismo is also quite a long 30-40 minute drive from the wonderful beaches in the area. So in a way we got what we wanted- our city kids got a short taste of country life, but for us, the experience was tainted by the restaurant.

Response from agriturismoa, dipendente at Agriturismo Archelao

We booked 2 nights at the Agriturismo Archelao on our first ever trip to Sardinia. We were a family of four, including two urbanised under 10's. Within an hour of arriving, we were helping to milk the sheep and herd the goats. This is a working farm and far removed from our normal five-star venues. Nevertheless, our seven year old described the first day as 'the best day of my life'. There are animals in abundance and you are given free rein to muck in (or not) as you like. Be in no doubt, the accomodation is spartan, but its clean, comfortable and exactly as described on the website. What made the whole stay so special was the warmth and genuine kindness of the staff, who went out of their way to fit in around our needs and entertain the children. The following day, we helped to turn our sheeps milk into cheese. Typically, Danielle the dairyman, who was up at 6am, rolled his sleeves up and then cooked us a thoroughly competent dinner at 8pm in the evening, all with a smile on his face. This farm is part of a group of four family-owned hotels. Archelao produces a significant part of the food for the group, ranging from hams, cheeses and sausage to fruits, juices and vegetables. I highly recommend a visit to this farm. Our children spent every daylight hour outside, running around in the fields, playing with the farm dogs. They returned happy, cheeks glowing and didn't touch their DSi's or Nexus's the whole time they were there. Interestingly, our next hotel was a 400Euro per night hotel, and given half a chance, they would have checked out instantly and gone back to Archelao! Thanks to Antonello, Danielle, Efisio and Daniella for looking after us. We shall be back

We have just returned from a trip to Sardinia, along the way experiencing many different styles of accommodation and dining. But this without doubt- was a true highlight. Only a few miles from Oristano, this agriturismo offers the true farm style experience that many wish for. The setting was a real working farm situated within a picturesque landscape. The room itself was very clean and spacious- simple, but of a good standard. Sadly, the blankets felt a little damp, however at least this assured us that they were clean and freshly replenished! But the real ace drawcard here was the chef- Marcelo. He took us on a private tour of the farm, introducing all the animals (!) and better still explaining where all the incredibly fresh meat and vegetables were grown and produced. At this special farm they make nearly everything they consume. The cheeses, jam, sausages and cured hams were just the start, let alone the homemade wine and meat (from the yard to the table). We were then invited into the kitchen and poured the first of many glasses of the house red (fantastic) and encouraged to graze and taste as we cooked. Marcelo is obviously an extremely talented chef and was generous in sharing his knowledge with warmth and good humour. Most places in Italy are looking to charge a small fortune for such a cooking experience- but this was all part of the total package- bed, breakfast, cooking lesson and amazing dinner (two people) all for 90 euros! Incredible. The food itself was a delicious experience on many levels. Entres of homemade cheeses and cured meats and handmade pasta were a real treat. However the first course of lambs heart, liver and lungs (sounds confronting, but you must try) finished with olive oil and white wine, was simply sublime. Marcelo even treated us to his award winning goat and prune dish. We spent the evening eating and drinking (much drinking!) together with Marcelo and a fellow traveller, making for a real festive atmosphere. A rare experience of culinary skill, incredible produce and genuine hospitality- made this a highlight of our trip. If you are heading to sardinia, check if Marcelo is in the kitchen- is so, this is a must do.
