Best vacation rental I have ever booked. You won't regret it. Location is amazing (right across from the beach and walking distance to restaurants and the train station). Views are baffling. Gelateria directly beneath your unit. What else could you ask for?

While this is a beautiful place and offers everything one needs, I don't think the average traveler, or those looking for luxury, will be satisfied. This is a EUROPEAN rental and there are some differences from a regular hotel or apartment elsewhere in the world.

First of all, lets get one thing out of the way - steps, steps, steps! If you can't climb steps or are not in shape, forget about it. Riomaggiore is basically a city built into the side of a cliff and the streets and walkways are on par with San Francisco. Get your quads in shape and your walking shoes ready before coming!

Second of all, this apartment is right on the very edge of the town - literally, the cliff overlooking the sea, from about seventy feet above the water. You have to descend all the way into the town first, and then climb back up about 100 uneven and precarious steps to find La Scogleria. It is slightly hidden in a maze of passages and alleyways snaking between buildings.

BUT, once you get there, it is worth it! The apartment is nicely appointed in typical European fashion - a little dated, quirky, not top-of-the-line appliances, etc. but everything is clean and works. There is a full working kitchen, a nice-sized bathroom with shower, bidet, and toilet, and a bedroom with a great view and comfortable bed. There are also two fold out beds in the wall for kids. Most importantly, you have a small balcony with a beautiful view of the Ligurian sea for all of those west-coast sunsets.

As with many European rentals, there is no main "living room" so make sure you and your travel companions are content with making conversation around the kitchen table all night. The table and the balcony are the two places where you'll likely hang out. If you like to sit on a couch and watch TV all night, this is not your place. You're in Europe, so go out and grab a late meal at one of the restaurants and mingle with the locals!

Things are laid back here and the terms of your stay are kind of loose. For us, it was a little hard to figure out who was who, mostly because of the language barriers; but we met both hosts (Paolo and Agostino) at one time or another. Don't expect a lot of details about how to get there, who to pay, when to pay, etc. Basically you tell them when you're coming, they keep the place open, and you get the key somehow, from someone :D Get the cash from an ATM and pay them for your stay whenever you may run into them. At least, this is how it worked for us.

We were greeted with a bottle of homemade Limoncello, and Paolo even shared a bottle of his own red wine with us. Despite obvious language barriers, these guys were super-sweet, humble and stayed out of our way. We almost didn't get a chance to pay them because we never crossed paths. But after knocking on the door of the adjacent apartment, they let us in and introduced us to their mother, we paid and were on our way. It was that simple.

That's about it. Riomaggiore is small, beautiful and has plenty of places to eat and drink. There is a great wine store about midway up on the hill and for the most part, I'd say the locals are sweet and fun to talk to. My overall impression with the Cinque Terre is that the elders and middle-aged people are awesome. It's very typical of many places we've stayed in Europe, there is a juxtaposition of love/hate for the tourism industry. It's mostly the young kids who seem to have a problem with it. As with all travel, the golden rule applies here. Be nice to the locals and they'll most likely return the sentiment.

Parking is an issue. Most of the Cinque Terre is closed off to tourist vehicles. So if you drive a car to the region, you have to find a parking spot outside of the towns, and walk in. There are a few limited spots that are free, but no guarantees in finding them open. Otherwise, a paid spot is about $20 a day. We found a free spot for two days and on the last day, moved our car into a paid spot where we promptly got a 20Euro ticket for no rhyme or reason. I'm not sure i understand how this situation works.

I suggest limiting the size of your baggage to avoid any headaches as you carry your bags half a mile up and downhill into town.

Another thing worth mentioning, the area is subject to flooding and mudslides, and the pathways that connect all the towns are sometimes blocked. They had a major landslide in 2011 and some paths are still closed. Check before you go.

After a five night stay in the middle of Rome and a 5 hour train ride on a Regionale train after waking before dawn in Rome, I arrived at the door of the apartment. I was helped up the steps with my heavy suitcase by a handsome young stranger who happened by. After pounding on the door given to me in an email set of directions for several minutes and getting no response I almost gave up and left to take the offer of a room by a middle aged lady in a housedress who approached me at the train station. Just as I felt tears of frustration and exhaustion welling up in my eyes out poked Mama's head from the shuttered window above me. Not a word of English was spoken by her, but she communicated to me that she did not hear me because her TV was too loud. A few minutes later she appeared at her door with the keys asking my name. She handed me the keys and and in I went. When I opened the balcony doors it was all worth it. The stunning view to the sea made me feel like I was on the sea. There were no sounds but for the seagulls who seemed to be following me from Rome. They were especially loud in Rome this year, but here in Riomaggiore their noise was dampened by the sound of the sea below. I spend four nights in that wonderful apartment rising before dawn, drinking strong expresso I made on the stove before hiking through the vineyards with their empty vines having been harvested in September and through the olive trees heavy with small black olives that fell off and dotted the hiking paths. All I needed was a water bottle, a camera and a couple of Euro for a snack along the way. The trails were surprisingly uncrowded compared to my last visit in June. I really do recommend going in a shoulder season if you want to hike.
There is a coop and several small grocery stores in Riomaggiore and you can get anything you need there. I ate a "fish cone"(two thumbs up) twice and got pasta take out twice (two thumbs up), both in shops in Riomaggiore. There are lovely restaurants there too, but after hiking all day, I just wanted to shower and eat on my balcony which was wonderful.
I felt like I met the whole family during my stay. Boy, did I get goodies too. Limoncela, a tray of home made cream cornettos (pastries) and a bottle of home made red wine. Everything was delicious and I guiltily ate all the pastries before I left. I think there were 12 of them. I saved the wine and drank it in my next stop, Milan. Thank you Paulo. Everything was delicious.
There were several nighttime thunderstorms when I was there. The last one blew out the TV reception in the whole village, but the wifi was fine and fast with no problem.
The kitchen was well equipped. There was all you needed to cook and coffee, tea, olive oil and basic condiments were provided. The bed was large and comfortable. It was spotlessly clean. I had no issues with the bathroom which also shared the same views as the bedroom window, out to sea.
Two years ago I stayed in Vernazza, but it was way too overtouristed and impersonal. i preferred the smallish, more quiet Riomaggiore.
I have a reservation for September of next year hoping to get there before the grape harvest. I am looking forward to days of hiking and coming home to a salty fried fish cone with a cold Moretti beer while sitting on my balcony enjoying the sunset in this most special of places.

The place seems friendly and we choose to enter. The four of us found ourselves upstairs, the order was quite quickly registered. Two dishes are served, but it will be at least another 10 minutes before the third course arrives and claim the last one that will come a little later. You understand that's not great. At the time of the addition a large beer was lost...
The dishes were good despite everything but beware!

Perfect location. Clean, compact apartment on the water's edge, 5 minutes from the station, and a great base to explore the entire area. Paulo and Guillermo are very good hosts.
Tip: if you have heavy bags, turn left at the end of the tunnel from the station, go 50 metres up the hill, and turn left into Via S Antonio opposite the ATM. Up 23 steps and turn left. Don't climb any more steps. Turn left at the "Salito Castello" plaque at the end of the passageway, and keep going down the stairs to no. 178 on the right. Ring the bell for the key to no. 174.The other way via the marina has 56 steps uphill, and is murderous.

We did a significant amount of research to ensure our exploration of the Cinque Terra was successful. As a result of this we parked our hire car at La Spezia train station parking having first obtained an advance ticket using the mobpark.eu website. From there we were able to take the train to Riomaggiore having first obtained the "Cinque Terre Card Train MS" from the Reception Centre of the National Park of the Cinque Terre at Piazza Rio Finale, 26, (Riomaggiore Railway Station ground floor), 19017 Riomaggiore and remembered to obtain enough cash from the Station ATM to pay for our hotel (the owner only takes cash). We chose this hotel mainly because it is clearly visible in the classic photos of Riomaggiore taken from the sea, figuring that it would be a perfect location. And indeed, in terms of the views from the balcony, it was although there are some elements of customer service that need to be improved. The address of Hotel La Scogliera (and specifically Apartment "Cargavù” where we stayed) is Salita Castello, 174 Riomaggiore 19017. The website suggested “once at Riomaggiore Train Station walk through the tunnel (on your right), then once outside continue straight on and take stairs down to marina, walk down to the slip for boats and head right to “Salita Castello” 178 for the apartment "La Scogliera". To pick up the keys go to 174.” This seemed easy enough but turned out to be a challenge. Since we did not want to leave our belongings in the hire car in the Train Station Parking for three days, we opted to take our suitcases on the train to Riomaggiore. This was a bit challenging especially carrying them up and down multiple quite steep flights of stairs and also down the marina to the water’s edge. However this was nothing compared to the issue of trying to find either our apartment #178 which we would never have been able to do as result of it being locked up behind a small security gate and inaccessible from the stairs, or the owners apartment #174 which for 15 minutes searching in the dark was very frustrating after a long day of travel. Even more frustrating was the owner not answering his phone when we called on multiple occasions for help. In the end one of us stayed with our suitcases on the boat slip (in the dark) while I knocked on random doors until we found the owner who was sat happily having his dinner! So we did not get off to a good start. As mentioned above you have to pay the owner cash for your stay and paying upon arrival is preferred. The apartment itself is perfect for anyone who wishes to stay in the Cinque Terre especially for an extended period self-catering. The apartment is secure, clean, spacious, is able to house a family comfortably (note there are only three rooms though – a combined bathroom/laundry, a kitchen (where we were very pleased to find a small complementary bottle of limoncella), and a large bedroom with a king-sized bed and an additional bunkbed), and has all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. The balcony is the highlight though as it overlooks the sea and offers wonderful views of the small harbor. There are many restaurants in Riomaggiore including a couple right by the harbor that we very much enjoyed. In summary this apartment is perfectly located so long as you do not expect a hotel experience and you don’t take too much luggage with you. Finally, on the days that guests are expected, the owner should watch out for arrivals at the time they say they will arrive and answer the phone in case his guests need help.

We stayed in "the room" which I would describe as small, but perfectly formed. It was clean and tidy with a double bed, fridge, table, tv, wifi and separate bathroom. Plenty of space for two travellers plus their large suitcases! There was also an air-conditioner which we found no need for during our stay (possibly useful in warmer months).

By far the best feature of the room though was the view. Since it is built into the Harbourside wall the window gives an uninterrupted view of the sea and provides a constant soundtrack of the lapping waves. Whilst the apartments have balconies and terraces it was lovely to be able to sit at the table and just enjoy… we also had a seagull and her chicks nesting just outside so there was always a show on.

The room does not include breakfast but cafes are just a stone's throw away and fridge and crockery are provided so you also have the option of feeding yourself. Be aware though that you'll need to wash up in the bathroom sink which is somewhat inglorious.

To top it all off the host is wonderful. We were warmly welcomed (although as other reviewers have noted he speaks no English) and were delivered gifts of homemade limoncello and the most delicious cream puffs during our stay.

I would recommend if you stay in Riomaggiore to check out la scorgia you won't regret it.

A note on the towns: lots of people ask which to stay in and whilst I don't have a definitive answer this information may help...

* There was a landslide in 2011 consequently the paths from riomaggiore to corniglia are closed (as of May 2015). If you are short of time and this walk is non negotiable you may wish to stay in one of the towns with path access.
* Corniglia is the only town NOT on the water which means you must use the train to get to other towns. The station is a little way out of the centre down lots of steps although trains run throughout the day. It's possibly the most car-friendly though which may be a consideration if you have a rental vehicle.
* Monterosso is the largest of the towns with a large beach, it has less of a port feel but is much flatter and more child-friendly.
* Vernazza and Monterosso may win the beauty contest with quaint harbours. Riomaggiore has a smaller harbour but extends up into the hillside further.
* As far as I can surmise you can buy a day ferry ticket for 20 euro but you need to travel in one direction because it gets clipped on the return journey. For this reason you may wish to stay in either riomaggiore or Monterosso which are at either ends.

Any which way you'll encounter beauty at every turn.

An amazing room/apartment in a stunning location. If you are coming to the Cinque Terre you couldn't go wrong with staying in Riomaggiore. Having been to all 5 towns I think this one has the best 'mix'. There is a nice 'pebble' beach next to the town which you can swim at, I think this is better than the over commercialised sand beach at Monterosso which is one of the reasons given for staying there. We stayed in the room as the apartment was already booked and we booked 8 months in advance. If you can grab the apartment. The room was presented exactly as shown on the website and as per previous reviews the hosts were pleasant and the complimentary Lemoncillo was waiting. I truly don't think that there is a better positioned room/apartment in the town. The marina area can get noisy at night but it wasn't a major issue with sleeping but could be if you are a light sleeper. By chance we were here during a music/wine/food festival called Briomaggiore, if you are coming in 2015 I would definitely recommend finding out when it is on as we have had some of the best nights of our trip here:-)

Aussie instructions to get to the rooms.
After walking through the tunnel you will get to the Main Street which will be on your left, ignore this and keep going straight down some steep steps labelled 'marina', go down the steps through another small tunnel and you will come out into the marina, down more steps and keep walking until you are at the slipway (almost at the waters edge), just before the first wooden plank on the slipway veer right and head up the stairs, keep going up a few more flights and you will see an iron gate with 194, this is the room, next gate will say 178 this is the apartment, leave your bags near the gate and go up a few more stairs and ring the bell at 174 for the key.

My husband booked this totally gorgeous apartment which is beautifully decorated, light and airy. Especially loved the fact that the sea was just below our window. The most wonderful part was the lovely hospitality we received from Maria, Paulo and Maria's lovely friend Rita. It was my 50th birthday 2 days before we arrived and Maria was so excited when she realised. A few hours later Paulo arrived at our apartment with a gorgeous lemon tart and a bottle of home-made Proscecco! Fabulous restaurants very nearby. We would return to Rio Maggiore and this apartment in a heartbeat!!! Highly recommended!!! Trip Advisor award extremely well deserved!!!!

As all the reviews say, this is the most unbelieveable view in CT. Pretty much as close to the sea as you can be. Wonderful to sit on the terrace with a bottle of Tuscan wine, afternoon or evening. David is an extremely helpful host, very responsive, perfect english and lots of good tips. But I'm just confirming what's already written, so thought I would add some tips:

Tip 1: Most of the easier trails are closed - so unless you are a hardcore hiker, the best way to see CT from Riomaggiore is take an early ferry from Rio all the way to MonteRosso, the furthest village. (The ferry is a 3 minute walk from La Scogliera).
Then take a day to work your way back using the train to ride from town to town. You need a day pass to do this on the train, so the ferry adds an extra 13 Euro, but you get the view of all the towns from the - well worth it. Makes for a lovely day that you can do at your own pace and plenty of walking even without the hikes.

Tip 2: We had a long trip, including a wedding, so were travelling reasonably heavy - and this is a LONG way to carry your bags. If you parked at the top, there is a great bag service that can take your bags up to your car in the lot. This guy has a little truck, but to get the bags to the truck he puts a large suitcase on his shoulder and the other in his hand and away he goes - had to be seen to be believed. 5 Euros a bag but we thought worth it with our big bags. David can book for you.
