We needed a break on our way to Sicily, and it had to be somewhere within 4 hours from Napoli. Cosenza seemed to be a good choice, and this hotel had the highest score. Well, I do not know how others are, but this one did not impress us much.
We had booked the rooms from their own website, informed them that we shall arrive around sunset, needed a parking lot, etc. I usually do this to all hotels, just to make sure there is no flaw in the reservation process. No response! So, our worries pended until we arrived.
The guy at the reception niether understood, nor spoke any foreign language sufficiently. English, German, French, Turkish, Arabic ... none worked. Although I handed him print of the reservation confirmation page, he put it aside, and tried to find it in his computer for more than 5 minutes. I had to tell him 3 times to open the gate to the parking area, so that my friend could unload in the meantime, but in vain. Afterwards, when there was a problem, it took us 2 minutes to make him understand "hot water"! If we Turks were not almost as skillful as Italians in communicating by mimics and gestures, we wouldn' t succeed.
Yes, the apartement was 75m2 indeed, but including a huge balcony half of its size. A minimalist decor mostly white, with a nice painting on the wall. 2 flat TVs, 1 small in the bedroom, 1 larger at the fuaye where a sofa convertible resided. A small kitchen section, but without any utensils, not even a glass. The tiny refrigerator was also empty. A bar-style high table and 2 heavy chairs, difficult to keep in balance. No furniture in the 40m2 balcony. The apartment was clean and tidy, but walls had some stains here and there. White is not an easy color. If you want to keep it clean, you should either paint it every year, or use wallpaper instead.
Although it was the most expensive hotel in our trip, being 66.50 €/night, the most disappointing was the breakfast. 1 kind of cheese and 1 kind of ham, no eggs of any kind, very few from all other choices. The worst is that there is no tea or coffee machine to serve yourself, you have to ask from the lady each time.
We had chosen this hotel, because other good options in Consenza were expensive too. We could not find any reason for them to be so, because there is not much to see.
Still, the hotel is located just 200m from their so-called open-air museum. Cross the divided road, enter the first street, walk straight ahead and turn right at the first wide street to walk north. It is pedestrian area for about 700m until the Duomo and a big square after that. But watch your step, because the side streets are full of feces!
Another interesting thing about the city was our TomTom could not find the hotel after 3 rounds. We asked people, but noone seemed to have heard of the hotel. I would say we could not communicate, because they seemed also to be unaware of the single, largest, and longest divided road through the heart of their city. Forunately, my Nokia's GPS eventually succeeded.
We got the impression that the place was not intended to serve as a hotel. Probably, someone has built it with the intent to sell as residences, but had to do something with them when there was not enough demand.
All in all, neither the city, nor the hotel is worth visiting. Maybe appropriate for long term rental for bussiness visits, but not with these prices of course.
He directed us upstairs to check in and within minutes we were all in our rooms. The first thing that surprises you is the size of the room. It had a kitchen living area as well as a separate bedroom. By Italian standards the shower was relatively spacious.
The next surprise was finding the bustling main street only minutes away. Lots of shops and eateries.
I didn’t give it a 5 star rating because of the street noise. We were on level 1. One member of our group had a room facing the other way and they had no such issues.
Positive aspects:
+Nicely designed
+Good location
+Big room (suite) with balcony
+Our baby cot was provided pretty quickly
Negative aspects:
-We paid extra for breakfast and we came down to eat at around 08 in the morning. The breakfast room was very full but unfortunately understaffed. There was only 2 people working: one preparing coffee and one doing everything else (refreshing buffet, clearing tables, doing the dishes). This meant that we first had to wait 10 minutes before someone asked us if we would like coffee/tea (we had to find napkins outselves). The breakfast buffet seemed to be nice enough when there was food available but because of the understaffing the buffet was almost never refilled. Almost everything was finished but we managed to find yoghurt still available; problem was however that there were no plates to put the yoghurt in! In the end we settled to eat fruit on our napkins. I understand this is Italiy and I can not expect the efficiency of Scandinavia, yet having worked in a hotel of similar size myself I know it is only a matter of calling in more staff when you know you are having a lot of guests. We spent 1h 10m in the breakfast room and only managed to get small bits to eat. See attached pictures of the empty buffet.
-The hotel is listed as a 4 star hotel. Yet there was no soap in our room (see picture)! The only fluid toiletries provided were two bottles of shampoo (with another hotel's label).
-Though you rent an apartment for 3 people there is only 1 piece of every utensil; ie. 1 fork, 1 knife, 1 plate, 1 glass, etc.
-The phone in the room did not work. We were told that if we wanted to call outside we had to come down to the reception and use their phone
-The hotel features free parking but the spaces we were directed to in front of the hotel were all full. Apparently there are more spaces but these were not shown to us.
-Our room was listed to include "Complimentary bottled water" and bathrobes, neither was to be found.
We directed these issued to the hotel asking for a partial refund and although we did get a reply their offer was only a lunch/dinner should we ever return. Living far away this is unlikely and though we would recommend Cosenza as a destination you there must be better places to stay at.
Negatives: the finish in the apartment was very poor. The plug socket in the bathroom had a gap between it and the tiles which made me very nervous with a young child travelling with us. The towel rail was hanging by a screw and could have fallen off at any moment. The room wasn't cleaned the day we were there. If you are going to cook for yourself, take your own cutlery as we had two plates, two forks and two glasses. The balcony didn't have any furniture, so we couldn't sit out on it in the evening. The floor was filthy when we got there, as we discovered when our son was crawling around on it.
Overall, if you need a place to sleep then this will do, but I wouldn't recommend for anything more than that.
