#13 of 342 hotels in Hamburg
Travellers' Choice
The TORTUE HAMBURG is the world en minature – refuge, home, coffee house, living room, hiding place, theatre, catwalk and opera at the same time. It’s a unique place of hospitality, diversity and French ‘Savoir-vivre’ in the middle of Hamburg. The privately managed design hotel in Hamburg’s historic city centre can be found between Jungfernstieg, Große Bleichen, Stadthausbrucke and Neuer Wall in the historic Stadthofe building. Here, guests can find everything under one roof so that they don’t need to leave the hotel. If guests want to leave, however, shopping opportunities, local and long-distance transport links, as well as numerous sights like the Elbphilharmonie or the Speicherstadt are within walking distance. Behind the building’s elegant brick facade from 1888 one can find 126 loft-like rooms in seven different categories with free WiFi and included mini bar, as well as a network of cosy courtyards and rooms with high ceilings which was designed by architectural offices David Chipperfield Architects and Stephen Williams Associates. The interior design from internationally renowned designers like Joyce Wang, Kate Hume and Stephen Williams combines different design eras, styles and moods. The French art of ‘Savoir-vivre’ – of decelerated living – can be found in many details: in the soft textiles, the extralong Divan beds from the luxury manufacturer Hypnos, the mosaic floors, the special light concepts in every room or the velvet seats throughout the hotel. Alongside its hotel business the Member of Design Hotels impresses with its gastronomic diversity. Two restaurants and three bars invite for relaxation and indulgence and offer an excellent quality and quantity. The two restaurant concepts ‘JIN GUI’ and ‘brasserie’ celebrate Asian and French-German cuisine at the highest level. The three individually designed bars ‘bar noir’ with dance floor, the private ‘bar prive’ and the smoker’s bar and luxury lounge ‘bar bleu’ round off the hotel’s gastronomic offering. TORTUE is an homage to life and the senses – a hotel in a unique location which combines relaxed lifestyle, design aesthetics, excellent service and highest quality.

Positives: Excellent location. The large room is very spacious and well appointed with an equally nice large bathroom. The front desk staff is knowledgeable and helpful. There’s a good coffee machine in the lobby. Testing for Covid is right next-door to the hotel. I had lunch at their Japanese restaurant which was very comfortable with good food. The breakfast in the main restaurant is good as well, and the prices are reasonable. You can order à la carte, or have their very expensive buffet. Negatives: The lobby and some of the hallways in the hotel are very dark which leaves the hotel with a dreary impression. The hotel is very modern and felt cold to me. The air conditioning did not work very well. They did not help with the luggage and there are a number of stairs in a few different places in the hotel.

I recently booked a night at this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary and advised the hotel accordingly. They acknowledged the occasion and promised to make it memorable. Memorable it certainly was, but for all the wrong reasons sadly! Nobody ever recognised our anniversary with as much as a word of congratulation throughout the stay. We were woken from deep slumber at 2 10 am with a fire alarm. The hotel was evacuated and we all remained outside for 30 minutes with all emergency services present. Eventually it was declared a false alarm and we were permitted back in. Apparently it was a system fault! It’s tricky to get back to sleep after an incident of this type so as a result we managed very little rest! On checking out the following morning nobody offered a word of apology and no gesture was made by way of a reduction of the bill. All told it was a dreadful stay and not one I would wish on anyone else. A very poor performance all round.

Dear colingduncan, First and foremost we would like to apologize for our poor service performance during your stay. Aside from the very unfortunate event of the fire alarm, which we are very sorry for, we are saddened to hear that your special occasion has not been regarded by our team. We strive to make all our guests feel special and welcome and we are truly sorry that you experienced otherwise. A note for a free upgrade at your next stay has been made in our reservation system. Once again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and hope to offer you better services in the future. With best regards, your TORTUE HAMBURG

This perfect hotel is located in the center of Hamburg, you can walk in all directions from there, shopping, sightseeing or you also can book packages for culture and music events. The hotel has wonderful apartments and very nice furnished. Just keep in mind that in summer the backyard where the rooms are facing are quite noisy because of the restaurants there. But its definately worth it.
