The building is in a quiet suburb of Berlin and is about 30 minutes travel from the centre. It is split into two - one half a hotel, the other half a hostel. I stayed in the hostel. The rooms are plain and simple, but clean and comfortable. There are no en-suite facilities in the hostel rooms, and you share with the entire floor. However, the facilities are clean and well maintained. There is a restaurant on site and a bar outside for drinks and Flammkuchen in the evening. The staff are friendly and incredibly helpful - and their English is far better than my German!
A very relaxing place to stay.

I stayed in the jugendgasthaus section. My room was small and basic but had everything one might need and, although the place was busy with a school party at the time, the communal bathrooms were clean and were sufficient for the number of people staying.

The very best feature of this place is the lovely biergarten serving nice basic food at decent prices. It really was a pleasure on a summer's evening to sit out. Breakfast in the garden, with busy little birds hopping about, was also enjoyable and the breakfast buffet is worth an extra €10, especially as the Grunewald area is so residential with no other options except for a bakery at the train station.

There are bus stops close by, but personally I used the Grunewald station to get around. It was a 10-15 minute walk and the normal train frequency to the central areas is every 10 minutes. It is on the S7 line which I found a handy one, as trains pass through the Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichstrasse and Alexanderplatz - three major interchanges.

The surrounding area is particularly leafy, well-heeled and attractive. Overall a relaxing place to stay in Berlin.

I stayed in a single room with shared bathroom in the jugendgasthaus section of St.-Michaels-Heim. Even though the gastehaus is not in the centre of tourist attractions, it is located in a beautiful green and quiet neighbourhood and very easy to reach the city centre by bus... So a great escape from the busy-ness. There are also bicycles for rental at the venue and staff were very helpful and can assist in booking shows and performances etc.

Clean room and common parts. Showers and WC on the floor. If showers have no doors, don't be afraid: it is a German thing ;) The staff is welcoming. The district around the hostel is really quite and suitable for older tourists.

Bad point: you must pay for the WiFi. XXI century is here: a free WiFi is a must-have nowadays! The BIO shop in front of the hostel is good, but quite expensive.

This hotel is in a house that was owned by the Mendelssohn family (yes, that Mendelssohn). It's a big hotel, so you can imagine how rich this family was. It's, of course, in the exclusive part of Berlin (Grunewald - do you remember in the movie Cabaret the rich English-language pupil of Michael York: her family's mansion was in Grunewald according to the original story). It's very quiet, the neighbouring houses are huge, the streets are wide and treelined. I stayed in a cheap room (39 Euros for two nights). I had to make my own bed (literally put the sheets on the bed on my arrival though they were provided, bring my own towel and be out of the room by 9 a.m. on check out day. You pay extra for internet. Having said all that, I loved the place. The woman on the front desk was so sweet, friendly and welcoming and that makes all the difference. Someone in another review mentioned that the bus was a long walk. I timed it (I used the M19 bus, but this place is also served by the X10, M29 and the 110) and it took me about 4 minutes to walk to the bus stop, but I am a fast walker and I knew my way (and the other reviewer may have been using one of the other buses, which stop further away). I recommend this place. I gave only three stars for service because you do quite a bit of the "service" yourself, but I think you will feel welcomed here.

I have stayed recently at St.-Michaels-Heim and was pretty satisfied. It is located in a nice neighborhood, ten minutes walking from the nearest metro station. The room was clean and i was surprised at the toilets and showers being spotless. The only setback is the absence of towels and internet connection. I did not take breakfast, so I cant say, but its price is half of the room price, which is a little strange. I do, however, recommend this place.

I stayed here during a cycle from Belfast to Poland, this room was perfect for what I needed. The shower rooms are communal which was fine for me, the breakfast was really good in the morning, and I found the staff really helpful and knowledgeable about the city and the location of local amenities. Berlin is a cool city and you can tour it perfectly from here. Nice historic building. Cool prayer room in the main hall area, at reception.

I have experienced a very pleasant stay in this hotel. It is situated in quiet but nice part of Berlin, near lakes. The hotel founds itself in woodland-like surroundings. The rooms are simple, but tidy and cheap.

Only unpleasant experience was with the cuisine, which is maybe too much senior oriented.

St Michaels Heim is located in a really beautiful setting. You will have to travel a little bit longer to reach the centre, but it's straightforward to reach from the S Bahn stations Grunewald or Halensee either with a regular bus or by foot. Everything was very clean and the staff were very helpful. Reception is open 24hrs a day. It was brilliant value for money. The only minor downside was there is an extra charge for wifi (I think it was about €1.50 for 24hrs and a few Euro for a longer pass). But the rooms are such good value for money, it wasn't really an issue. Definitely recommended.
