We have just returned from a stay at Citylight hotel. We had 35 students and 4 staff and this is by far the best hotel we have stayed at in Berlin. The rooms were clean and in excellent condition. We were all in one self contained corridor which was great.

The breakfast was of a high quality with a wide selection of food. The hotel also provided packed lunch for us. Students got to make their own rolls from the selection of cheeses and meats available. We also had our evening meals at the hotel and these too were of a very high quality.

The hotel had a large games room for the students and for a small fee they could hire pool cues etc. this kept them entertained in the evening. There was even a disco on the Monday night which they loved.

The hotel is centrally located, just a sort distance from a main S and U bahn station. This made it very easy for getting around.

The hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly. If there was a problem at all it was quickly dealt with.

We will certainly stay here again.

For a 2 stars hotel it was really good, very clean, friendly staff, good breakfast, good location, near the U Bahn ( underground). Just read someone did not feel safe but I must say, I felt Berlin the safest town I've visited and so , the hotel surrounding area is not an exception.
I recommend this hotel .

Good value for money accommodation for groups. We use this hotel whenever we travel with senior high school students conducting site studies for History. Short walk to the S & U bahn, shopping centre (Gesundbrunnen) & restaurants. The hotel has a games room and internet facility which is great for the students, and the breakfast is very good. A short train trip and you're in the heart of Berlin.

One word to describe it would be awful. I previously stayed here with some friends, the bed felt like i was sleeping on a brick, the room of 6 i was in was behind a caravan park which played loud music throughout the night. The man receptionist who was there was creepy and made us feel unsafe. The food is another story. It was cold and tasted awful, the pancake machine broke and took twenty minutes to get a decent amount, when it broke the kitchen staff did nothing to help. Not only this but the toaster took 15minutes to toast a piece of bread. The best part was the juice machine and the butter machine which says a lot. Although it’s mostly clean however after 9pm the hot water in the shower is turned off and made freezing cold. The dinner some nights were vaguely edible, it wasn’t true German cuisine. The kids area downstairs was good, however you need to exchange your passport to actually get the equipment, which is an inconvenience as it takes a lot of time. There is also a small smoking room downstairs too which wasn’t busy. There is also a karaoke room too, which was rather eerie when we got a glimpse of it (as a member of staff went in). But it is locked with a key which a member of staff has to open, you also need to pay a high ridiculous price for a slot. The area is also very dodgy, we heard a gunshot at 12:11am which was very scary. This not a hotel either, it is a hostel- which should be mentioned in the name. Safe to say I will not be returning to this hostel again.

Response from Anja Schneider, General Manager at Citylight Hotel
Responded 14 Jun 2023
We are always willing to receive feedback. But it has to be constructive. If you were a guest here, we would have wished you contacted the reception about any upcoming problems so that we have a chance to take care of it. We also need to mention that some comments are simply not true (prices for disco/karaoke, hostel, toaster, broken machines, cold food). And honestly, calling us creepy is not very constructive either. Next time you are a guest somewhere and there are things you do not like, we recommend talking to the staff and explain what you don’t like so that things can be improved in the future.

I stayed at this hotel with a small group of art college students. There were 13 of us, 3 aged 25+, the rest 19-24, about half of us were students, the rest were partners/travel buddies). The purpose of our trip was to visit some art exhibitions and enjoy a bit of nightlife. It was NOT a structured school trip and this was made abundantly clear to the staff at check-in, in both English and German. From the moment we checked in we were treated rudely and with suspicion. The fact that couples were sharing rooms was queried - again we made it clear that everyone in the group was an adult and free to choose who they roomed with. We were handed a list of rules before we checked in - including things like "it is forbidden to climb from one room to the other via the balconies" - and eventually we were allowed access to our rooms. We had barely settled in for a nap when a room supervisor came in without knocking, muttered "Sie sind schon ins Bett" and proceeded to turn on all the lights and bang around the room, quite unsubtley checking us out and trying to see what we had brought with us into the hotel. The service deteriorated rapidly after that.

Main complaints:

We stayed 4 nights and not once were our towels or sheets changed.

Our group was not allowed to use the bar facilities despite everyone being over 18 (16 is the legal age for drinking beer & wine in Germany) and despite this being one of the reasons we booked this hotel - so that we could have a drink in-house without having to search for a bar. The reason given was that we were a "school group" - they refused to accept that we were all adults even on production of our passports to prove our age (I am over 30 ffs) and even though there was a group of German schoolkids there all aged 17 who were being served without any problems at the bar. We were not rowdy, loud or intoxicated at any point of our dealings with hotel staff, so I do not understand this.

The breakfast was fine but the evening meal was dreadful - pasta with sauce, dried out salad and left over fruit and yoghurt from b/fast for desert. We had booked an inclusive rate but most of our group chose to eat outside the hotel even though we had paid for dinner. This annoyed the staff no end and they complained that we did not turn up for dinner - seeing as we had paid for it surely they should have to prepare it whether we came or not?

Despite complaining (in English and German) none of our concerns were dealt with. I have not yet received a response to my letter of complaint.

Tip: if you're travelling with a young adult group, do NOT stay here. Try the IBIS hotels on Prenzlauer Allee, they are vastly superior and in a better location. For something cheaper, go to the Circus hostel. Citylight is only good for school groups aged under 14 that need ridiculous rules to keep them under control.

I have never been so annoyed or insulted by hotel staff anywhere I have stayed in Germany or elsewhere.

We visited this hotel on a university residential and discovered that the hotel was not suited to our age or group. It appears to be clearly aimed at schools, perhaps even college groups at a push but definitely nobody older than 18. Our group ranged from 19 - 50 year olds, absolutely ridiculous when negotiating bunk beds.

On both arrival, during our stay and checking out of the hotel female staff were less than pleasant, the only member of staff that was welcoming, and gave the reception a welcoming atmosphere was Fred. The neighborhood is not lit well nor is it suited for walking through on an evening or in small groups, it is however, a five minute walk from U and S bahn stations (train and underground stations,) and also offers a large shopping centre with plenty of shops. The main road has a selection of supermarkets and take aways but I would advise travelling toward the city centre for restaurants, using a 5 or 7 day underground pass you can come and go very easily through good links to the city.

The hotel is simple in design and was always kept clean. Breakfast is continental, offering both quantity and quality - through a variety of cereals, meats and bread you can get croissants - if you arrive early enough, - and eggs and bacon at the weekend. The beds are comfortable and offered a great night's sleep (provided you get a single bed or bottom bunk.)

The hotel offers a 24 hour bar served hot and cold soft drinks and alcohol, but does not serve anything (including tea or hot chocolate,) to any students. They do, however, serve alcohol to them downstairs in the discotech. I would advise taking a travel kettle - these are also not provided by the hotel. The hotel does provide a hand and bath towel for each guest but these are not changed without a €1 charge. Hairdryers and mirrors are also in the room.

Should you book a room on the side of the hotel, do be prepared to be kept awake by the train tracks (these run alongside the hotel - I would suggest keeping the window closed on a night.)

This hotel may be suited to school trips, provided that they are not legally old enough to drink, and are well chaperoned (particularly when around the neighborhood at dark,) but was definitely not suited to my needs for this trip. While there are good aspects of the hotel I would not recommend this.

Me and my cousin stayed in the Citylight Hotel from the 10th until the 15th of August, we were in Berlin for a short summer break, and we both found this hotel to be absolutely brilliant, not too far from the central sights but far enough for it to be quiet and more local. The hotel is 5 mins from Gesundbrunnen U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations which has frequent and fast trains to the center of town, and is underneath the Gesundbrunnen Centre mall which was really nice - lots of good shops like H&M and a shop with DHL facilities for mailing letters home.

The hotel itself is incredibly quiet, I wasn't woken up at night by any noises (except for the wake up call that I ordered, and got dead on time), the rooms are big with enough room to move, have a massive cupboard, large windows which can open slightly or completely depending on the weather, and all are very well designed and modern, and they are cleaned every day with the soaps/shampoos restocked each time along with fresh sheets and towels.

The hotel has a fantastic breakfast spread, lots of meats, breads and salad, along with cereals, teas/coffees and was kept well stocked the whole time, I would have liked more of a hot choice but this is Europe, so it wasn't a problem at all. The games room has two pool tables, a big telly and vending machines for snacks, drinks and cigarettes as well as an indoor smoking room, which was handy because it was raining heavily outside. The bar is very well stocked, and also very cheap so that got used a lot! The staff are absolutely fantastic, really polite and very helpful even with my limited German.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone, and will almost certainly be coming back next year!

This is really a hostel and not a hotel. It is suitable for teens and groups on a budget. It can get noisy. The walls are thin. It has bunk beds, towels and other basics including a hair dryer. On check out, there is thorough inspection of facilities. You are penalized for losing the smallest of things including the card that comes with your room key. Wifi is excellent. Breakfast is good. They provide dinner if you ask. They have a play room in the basement. Its best asset is location. It is a 5 minute walk from the mall and metro. There are plenty of restaurants in the area.

The room and bathroom were very clean. We had great sleeps. Staff spoke English, helped to get us oriented, suggested local restaurants, and sold tickets for the subway. We had a family of 12 so the families of four had a set of bunk-beds for the kids. The breakfast was really great. Subway was an easy five minute walk.

The hotel is about a three minute walk from the Gesundbrunnen undergroound/overground station. As you leave the station by the front entrance, look for the Holiday Inn, and walk toward it, then past it round the corner and you're there. There is plenty of shopping opportunities, with the three floor shopping mall next to the station and a number of discount shops along the main road, as well as Aldi and Lidl supermarkets. The eating opportunities in the area are more limited, mostly being of the kebab shop or food court variety.

The hotel supplies a large breakfast buffet (hot food - bacon, scrambled eggs and hot dogs - only available on the weekend). The room is well appointed with a mini fridge, plus tea and coffee and a number of "snack" foods. There is also a bar next to reception.

The bed was a couple of single beds stuck together and was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and well supplied with amenities. The free wi-fi was OK but a bit slower than I was used to. I can't complain about the hotel. Also the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The area around the hotel is a bit of a let down, but you can easily travel to anywhere in Berlin from the station, which I recommend.
