I JUST returned from a two night stay at the Carolinenhof and a little personal time in Berlin following a work trip elsewhere. I believe this hotel was named after a woman who did some mercy work in the medical and / or psychiatric field. There is a placard in the hotel lobby that tells her story. It is in German though and my German is not yet quite good enough to read this in great detail. There is in fact just across the street a small psychiatric hospital. The Carolinenhof was little more than a place to lay my head and I did not use all of the hotel's facilities, so keep that in mind as you read on. As I always do, here is a look at the Great, Good, Bad, and Ugly. Then, I will answer THE review question - when I return to Berlin will I stay there again(?) Ready? Here goes. . .

GREAT

* Location: I found this to be an excellent location. This hotel is very close to the Guntzler Str. U-bahn (U9) stop yet . . . is situated on a quiet street. After staying the previous three nights elsewhere and getting little sleep, I slept like a rock at Carolinenhof. While the U9 is not the best line to have quick access to (it will generally involve cross-overs), it did not hinder me either.

GOOD

* Cleanliness: there is a real emphasis on cleanliness at this hotel.

* Rooms: my room was of respectable size and featured a very nice bathroom.

* Staff: In limited interaction, I found all three members of the staff I interacted with here to be very pleasant and professional. This is nice - I too often find snarling personnel that think they are doing you a favor when they answer a simple question at Euro hotels and restaurants. Sad but true.

* I did not use the sauna or small work-out area but . . . the hotel has them. Use of these rooms involves having to get a key from the front desk.

* The limited grounds look very relaxing and nice. I was in Berlin to meet a friend and did not linger but it looked like it would have been nice to.

BAD (room for improvement)

* Clean but 'Clinical': I mentioned the cleanliness and the tie to the founder working in the medical field AND the psychiatric hospital across the way. Well, I cannot help but think these things are connected. My room and the hallways, etc. all had a very clinical cleanliness and a bit of blandness. My guess is that this building was at one time a medical facility converted to a hotel. The door between my room and bathroom / entrance area lent to this - it was a kind of semi-opaque glass door that one would find in an old office building.

UGLY

* Nothing ugly to report

BOTTOM LINE

* I felt like I received good value at the Carolinenhof and that it is a nice choice for Berlin.

* If I return to Berlin (and I hope I do) will I stay there again? On one hand, I have no regrets about this hotel choice and very well could stay there again. On the other, I would have to at least consider other options.

* Calibrate your expectations accordingly and you will not be displeased with the Carolinenhof Berlin.

We booked to stay in this hotel during the world cup when hotel prices seemed quite high. This hotel was reasonable and although at first we thought we were some way from the actual city centre (it was our first visit to Berlin) we walked back from the main shopping street the first night and it was only 20 minutes walk. After that we did not use the subway much, it was much easier and more interesting to use our street map to get around on foot. We walked back pretty late some nights and never felt threatened. Having said that there is a metro station just 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

The receptionist was excellent he really went out of his way to help us, not just answering questions but greeting us with information he thought we might be interested in. There was no financial motivation it just seemed to a genuine desire to help us and also show off a city he was obviously proud of.

The room was more of an apartment with a kitchenette attached. In fact the building seemed more like apartments than a hotel but the room was definitely up to 3 star standard with a good sized bathroom and extremely clean. No complaints about the room and a quiet location with no traffic noise at all.

Breakfast was a cold buffet but there was the option to eat outside in the garden which was pleasant.

If we went back to Berlin we would use this hotel again.

This is perhaps the most affordable city hotel we’ve come across so far. The staffs were nice and the room was very spacious with lots of storage. The facilities in the room were basic but working well. It was also very clean and very close to U9 (city metro); very convenient if you need to get around in Berlin. Their breakfast was a basic buffet, but also at a reasonable price and presented in a lovely dining area. This hotel do offer parking spaces if you travel with your own car, but at 10 Euros per night. This is the same with the street parking, but I believe there’s more security in a hotel parking space. Just be mindful that the spaces are very small so won’t be idea if you have a big car like a 4x4. If you do not book a room directly through the hotel reception, but through a travel website, you still need to contact the hotel directly to book a parking space.

Just a note: make sure that you have checked all drawers/storage area when you check out so you won’t lose something upon your next travel, because they do have so many places to put your things in the room. We accidentally left some important items when we arrived at another city, and had to return to the hotel to retrieve them.

I came to Berlin to attend ITB from March 5 to 7 . I booked this hotel since it’s close to exhibition centre . The first two days was good eventhough they will not clean the room unless it’s been asked for , explanation is that for long staying guest cleaning will be done once in 3 days unless you hang the display card for room cleaning outside the door !!!! Worst explanation I have ever got in my lifetime . For your knowledge they are not reducing rates or giving free stay since I am long staying guest and how can they cut off my service for what I have paid for ? No footwear or no dental kit in the room .
Breakfast is very much pathetic with one apple , a bunch of grapes , two pears , one citrus fruit for the entire guests staying in the property 🙄.
Coming to the bitter experience that I have encountered : I went to hospital today and on the way out I told them I have kept my key locked inside the room ( no key card) . They told will help me unlock it when I come back . On returning from hospital I asked for a cup of coffee from the machine which costs 3 euros and the lady served it and gave me the second key to take back for opening my room and asked me to return when I come down any time . As I was taking the sip , I found it’s extremely cold and asked is this the way coffee is being served ? Their reply is coffee from machine is always cold . My question for them is what’s the whole point of COFFEE if it’s not being served hot . After exchanging words which is not amicably done , they gave me another coffee which is also not that hot but I graciously accepted since I didnt want to create issues because I was not well . The front office lady on handing me the coffee raised her voice and called another lady out from back office and asked me to accompany me to the room to get the first key back . The whole point is to insult me since they doubt I have lost my first key and to take revenge on the three euros they had lost with the first cup of coffee which they had replaced .
Keeping staff with these kind of attitudes is not good for the hotel present in a place like Berlin hosting the famous tourism fair ITB .

I booked a room at this hotel and left my credit card details to guarantee the reservation. However they then attempted to deduct €50 from my card. There was no mention of this on the website or in any of the email correspondence. They then emailed me to say my card was not valid (in fact I did not have sufficient funds) and cancelled my booking! Be very careful when booking this hotel!

TL;DR: I forgot (God knows how) to cancel a 14 days stay at Carolinenhof Hotel. I notified them on the day of my scheduled arrival .I begged them to charge me 2, 3 or 4 nights but they refused and charged me *90% of the entire 14 days stay* - 662€.

I had planned a trip to Berlin to meet a dear friend who now lives in Central America. We didn't know if his apartment will be big enough for the two of us, so I booked 2 hotels on Expedia. When he got his place we decided I could stay with him, and I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO CANCEL the hotels. I can’t explain why. I am usually a very responsible person, but this slipped out of my mind into a black hole. I realized I have these reservations in berlin on july 10, the day I was supposed to check in. Called Expedia immediately, and they said they would try to help. They talked to the first hotel – which kindly charged me for two nights and that was the end of it.

Carolinenhof refused to Expedia’s request made on my behalf so I went there myself. I talked to two executives, who didn’t even bother to introduce themselves to me (no name tags). They told me they simply have to charge this amount and there is no debate about it. They scolded me for being irresponsible and kept explaining I had signed and agreed to this policy and this is it. I practically begged, at that time in tears, to be “fined” for 2, 3 or 4 nights – but not 90% of 14 nights. I told them it is unfair, and that I understand that this 90% cancellation policy makes sense when it comes to a weekend stay, but not two whole weeks (in July). I told them again and again that I made a mistake and fully understand that I should pay for it – but so much money is not fair. I was 2 days late canceling a 14 days stay, not a 4 days stay. If I had canceled only two days before, they wouldn’t charge a cent. When I told them I was a school teacher and can’t afford to give away 662€ for nothing, they said that a school teacher should know better and that I set a bad example to my students. They, of course, didn’t want to hear about the other hotel’s conduct with me.
BTW, I asked them if they would apply this policy to a month’s stay and they answered “yes” without hesitating. I also asked If I had stayed here for a week and then tell you my plans have changed and I have to go in 2 days, I’m sure you would have said “thanks you for your stay with us” and not charge me for the entire stay? But they assured me that they would, that if a person has to cut his stay short they charge him for the full time, even with a two days’ notice before leaving, and I think anyone making reservation with them should know this.
I was also told that people like me cause hotels financial damage – just the other day some businessmen booked 5 very expensive rooms and didn’t show up, and the hotel didn’t have their credit cards or anything and lost a lot of money. I said that this story makes me all the more frustrated, because I realize now I am paying for those missing businessmen, to that the person who spoke to me had no reply. It was the most unpleasant conversation of my life. After reprimanding me for 15 minutes or so, they offered I use this reservation for a future stay with them for the next year. I told them I have no plans to visit Berlin in the near future (I really don’t, and frankly, after this awful conversation with them I couldn’t see myself entering this hotel again without crying).

Having paid Carolinenhof Hotel 662€ gives me every right to write this review about them. I have no idea what my room looks like so I didn't address that in my review or scores. (BTW they told me my room is still available for me and that they haven’t opened it for booking yet – WHY? I had cancelled it.)

I think that there are a lot of good hotels in the world and what makes the good ones great is service and attitude towards people. I think Carolinenhof Hotel fails this miserably.

This hotel is a referbished council housing block. No fan aircon, toilet right on top of radiator and the smell in room when 31c outside well you could taste it. I was supposed to stay six nights but got there at 20.30hrs to find it was 28c in room and no way to cool it down. Left the next morning and had to pay 90% of my full stay as it was their policy on cancellation. Feeling of being ripped off you bet. No help from Expedia.com as they close at weekends .
Ps double bed to me is not two single beds pushed together I felt like Moses at the Red Sea

Within very short distance of U9 station Güntzelstraße, this place is surprisingly quiet, especially when you have a room facing the garden in the back.
My room was spacious with everything I needed. Nothing fancy, but I don't want or need that. Very clean, of course.
I should have asked for an extra sturdy mattress to suit my weight. Without it it was more on the soft side.
Breakfast in the nice extended winter garden room was very good (it costs extra, which you know in advance; there are places nearby where you can have breakfast instead, of course); staff there, as well as at the front desk, was always very helpful and friendly at all times.
A very good value for the very reasonable price.
Definitely recommended.

Clean, accessible parking, great breakfast, helpful staff all make this reasonable property a gem in a neighborhood setting of Charlottenburg. Named after the wife of Theodore Fliedner, founder of the Deaconess movement, Carolinenhof has ties with the German Deaconess Motherhouse in Kaiserwerth, but people of all faiths are welcome.

Me & my boyfriend originally booked a different hotel however this was fully booked so were transferred here. We were pleasantly surprised on our arrival. The staff were very friendly and took our bags for us as we were too early to check in so we got on the U-Bahn (2 minute walk from the hotel) and went to explore Berlin.

Our room was very spacious and faced the front of the hotel, we couldn't hear a thing during whilst we slept! The beds were so so soooo comfortable , as soon as our head hit the pillow we would sleep.

The only downside to the hotel (considering we are a young couple who like a drink) was the location. The location itself was very nice however not much at all in the surrounding area so to get anywhere you would need the U-Bahn .

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return if back in Berlin!

Is this hotel situated near / walking distance to the main city?
Answer from inferno1020
Orlando, Florida111 contributions12 helpful votes
My answer to your question is yes and no. I choose this hotel because it was not in the heart of the city. I wanted to see how the locals live and at the same time not to be miles and miles away from all the action. The hotel was on a tree lined street and though my unit was facing the main road I did not hear much noise and I even kept my window open all the time I was in the room. I took the metro everyday to see the attractions and it probably took 4 to 8 stops to get there. So for me it was near all the action but I would not say it was within walking distance. A half a block from the hotel is a street called Berlinerstrabe. It is a main road (4 lanes) with restaurants, 2 supermarkets, a fruit and veggie stand, a dry cleaner and other types of store. My point is, there is action in the vicinity just no major attractions. I hope this helps you to make the best choice in choosing your accommodations. I know that I would stay at Hotel Carolinenhof again if and when I return to Berlin.
