We had to change dates at the last minute due to a family berevment. The hotel changed our booking without difficulty. It really was a tonic for my husband and i post the funeral of his father.
Firstly there is no better position in1850. There are a few swanky, glittery hotels all around. Fun to watch the comings and goings from our prime balcony looking right up to Saulire peak at 2700m.
From the minute we set foot from our transport we were greeted by the most friendly and efficient gentleman .Skis ,bags dissapeared to all the right places! private tour to the boot room, pool area and greeted by the fantastic staff there. Lots of space to sit and boot up in the morning. Your skis are outside for you in the morning ready for the piste.
The receptionist showed us to our room. For France the room was spacious, sparkling clean, crisp linen. Everything you could need, Plus our balcony view was the best in 1850!!
It gets better, lots of hot water, always warm rooms, prompt service and turn down at night. Wifi and excellent TV channels.( British too)!
Dinner was a relaxed, leisurely event in a spacious dinning room,. We always had a table overlooking the Etoille poma run and trees laden with snow.. Truly magical at night when lit, snow on the trees and the gondola running ( stops at 7pm) Jardin gondola, your home run and transport to 1850.a stones throw away.
The dinners/breakfasts were just perfect. Have to say we could find no fault. If there was something you didnt wish to eat Sid or Wissam were able to offer an alternative.
Two exceptional gentlemen who led and ran a most efficient, but relaxed dinning room and their staff were lovely and engaging.
A good choice of wines. We found the house white very acceptable and reasonable!
On our last night ,as a surprise Sid had asked the Chef to bake me a lemon meringue tart. Earlier in the week the tart was finished on the dessert table!!
Its the little things that the staff did during our week that made this such a memorable holiday. Nothing was too much effort, always joyful and most importantly done with a smile.
Oh, and in the evening there is a most talented musician who plays away, easy listening music. . One night we even had a dance! totaly unpexcted bonus .
So if you like door step skiing, exceptional staff, best ski area in the world in a tradiontional French Savoie Hotel you cant " ski" past it!!
Just hope its there next year. We would book now!
For a family, the hotel offeres sizable and well equipped family rooms, and children are very welcome at the hotel. And they loved the pool, obviously.
For two young men, the place was a bit quiet, but then again, we came for the skiing, not the night life (which in our experience was totally absent - at the hotel anyway).
I recommend to anyone who seeks a stay at a place nice, hospitable place with excellent food. For sports, the hotel is in the middle of the slopes.
On the down side, some of the guests were weird..some letting their kids scream or cry in corridors at night/early morning-happens sometimes..but the hotel itself was very basic, unlike the brochure. No contact with the real world - tv/papers or radio, and if you got the room next to the lift, you could hear the mechanical whirr...all night!
Nice resort, but apart from the staff, this hotel is nothing to write home about!
The Staff are exceptional, very friendly and will do anything for you. From the porters to the manager all friendly and professional.
The Food is first class. Breakfast is a great choice of cereals, meats, cheese, pastries, juices and some cooked items, eggs, bacon sausages etc etc all presented well in a buffet style.
In the evening is where the restaurant really excels itself. The five course meal will certainly prevent you from losing any pounds despite the most rigourous of days skiing. The food standard is very high and a well balanced choice throughout the week. The cheese board presents a wonderful selection as does the sweets. All in all top marks to the chefs.
As for the skiing, well being based in Courcheval 1850 means access to 100s of miles of pistes in the worlds largest ski area. From this hotel access is quite literally out the boot room door. The staff in the shop are great; knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Each morning they greet you by name and by the time you have your boots on, your skis are outside ready for you to just ski off! - its down a small slope and straight onto either a gondola or drag lift simple.
The nearest gondola provides your link into courcheval centre for apres-ski too. the gondola is only 1-2 mins walk away and is open until 8pm. Don't miss the return as its a good 15-20 min hike uphill or a pricey 25-30 euro taxi!!
The only small gripe we had was the temp inside the hotel. it was very warm, sometimes too warm. We had had the best week weather wise (sometimes skiing in a t-shirt) so perhaps this was why the hotel was so hot. We had to sleep with the balcony door ajar!!!
We note from other reviews that the decor is dated. My wife and I thought that the decor was charming and even if it was a little dated it was still very clean and tidy.
We had a fantastic week, really this hotel should be rated higher than the three stars it has been awarded ... would definately go back again.
The Hotel sends some mixed messages on what it is about. On one hand it operates like a 5 star hotel with very impressive food at the restaurant and turn down service in the evening. On the other hand, it can feel like a basic guest house with an allocated table for the week for dinner (if you ask to move table you get an arrogant response along lines of "this is the way we operate here so you just need to accept it") and the awful sofas in the bar area are like something out of the 1980s with general decor in desperate need of updating. Bedrooms are ok but again a little old fashioned.
Overall, the hotel is really well run, the General Manager is excellent and with just a bit of updating it would be terrific.
The ski shop is fabulous - I wish I could've brought those boys home with me. Where else do find your skis laid out for you in the morning? And how many times have you been offered help in taking your boots off after a long day of skiing, while your slippers are brought to you?
The hotel boasts a spa with a nicely heated pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Perfect after a long day on the slopes.
You will not starve at Les Ducs, as the dinners are spectacular 5 course affairs. So much for the plan to work off a pound or two on the slopes....you'd be lucky to return home without having gained weight! Breakfast is a buffet, with loads of gorgeous fresh French baked goods. Yum.
The service is impeccable - both in the restaurant and in the bar.
The rooms are not large, but they have everything you need, and are kept in immaculate condition thanks to the excellent housekeeping staff. The beds are super comfortable. We had a standard south facing room, but I am not sure it was worth the extra money. Sure the view is nice, but, let's face it, the nicest views are from the top of the slopes!
This was our first visit at Les Ducs, but definitely not our last. Courchevel itself is a fantastic ski destination, with lots to do for skiers at all levels. I highly recommend it.
