Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Very handy for Waverley Station, particularly if you want to take in The Scotsman Steps. Rooms and bathrooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable. The layout of the hotel is a little quirky but everything has a feeling of quality. Breakfast is a treat.

If you do not like the variety of sandwiches on the afternoon tea menu can you ask for different ones and can you ask for Brown bread.
Do the rooms have coffee makers....... or a kettle for heating water along with instant coffee packets and tea sachets?
My room description said it had an electric kettle. For life of me I couldn't find it but I was ok with that. I was more concerned trying to get a fan in the room. I stayed there in July during the heat wave and the hotel rooms are not air conditioned. Being on the 6th floor, it got awfully stuffy and hot so hot tea or coffee was last thing my mind.

One of the reviews said that the Scotsman is currently undergoing refurbishment. Is this true and if so will it be done by October?
Don’t know but when we were there it didn’t affect us as it was the second floor that was being refurbished and we were on the 4th. Suggest you call the hotel and ask as I am sure they will have other rooms on other floors available.
