Guest experiences at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh are mixed. While the hotel's location is frequently lauded for its convenience to local attractions and transport links, and its amenities—such as the breakfast selection and overall cleanliness—receive commendation, the service has drawn both praise and criticism, with some guests finding it friendly and others experiencing slow responses, especially in the restaurant. Rooms often come under scrutiny for being small and noisy from external sources like traffic and ongoing construction, detracting from their comfort and views. Moreover, opinions on value suggest that some guests do not feel their expenditure is justified, given their overall experience.

Stayed for a few nights with works.

Reception is generally of a modern standard and as expected from a large city hotel, but the restaurant has a feeling of half modernised and the room i stayed in appeared to have last been updated in the 90’s.

Bedroom was large and accommodated everything I needed. Hangers and iron good, but the kettle is fixed to the tray and there is no plug to use it so the whole thing has to be moved to use it. The socket i used was also not fixed to the wall!

Bed comfortable and pillows were good, but no sockets at the bedside.

Room, like the rest of the hotel was generally cold. Breakfast restaurant had extra electric heaters setup to attempt to keep it warmer.

Bathroom big enough and shower (although very old) did work and pressure was generally good. Products were a bit naff and didn’t lather so you have to use a lot.
Also mould on the walls showing poor extraction and cleaning.
Don’t plan on sleeping before 22:30 as the bar empties it’s glass bins until this time, so lots of clattering and banging from below and in the street if your room is rear facing.

Breakfast was good and had a broad offering.

Receptionists were generally friendly and helped me out when I reported the smoke detector being jammed full of toilet roll however when I refused to give an email address for ‘marketing purposes’ there was a notable change in friendliness.

Would stay again if I had too but given the number of other hotels in the city, there would be no need too.

The location is great as its only a short walk from waverley Station. There are stairs behind the hotel that lead straight to the Royal Mile. Rooms are dark and rather dated. All the staff we came across were kind and helpful, especially reception. Breakfast is buffet style and can get rather busy during peak times. Felt there wasn't enough staff for the amount of guests on a busy Saturday morning.

We had issues with housekeeping on the day we were leaving. Our departure time was 2pm but on 3 seperate occasions housekeeping walked straight into the room, no warning, not even a knock on the door. Absolutely appalling.

The hotel is nice and good value for money but there are nicer hotels near by.

Whilst the hotel was very nice and the staff all very friendly and helpful. The hotel was being refurbished at the time of our stay (not mentioned when booking ). This meant breakfast was delivered to your rooms and for me consisted of a yogurt a very sad looking portion of fruit and an extremely sun standard vegetarian sausage in a roll and a pan au chocolate. For the money paid for our stay this was extremely disappointing although adapting to the situation the quality of food offered should be much better you also only had three time slots to choose for breakfast the latest being 9am -9:15 am.
The room itself was very clean and comfortable but was noisy we could hear the occupant in the adjacent room coughing and sneezing all night.
Air conditioning not yet up and running so it was also very warm and due to being at the front very noisy if opening a window. Overall disappointing stay

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from 29/7/20 - 31/720 The hotel is in a great location close to the Royal mile. At check-in we were asked if we would like to purchase breakfasts at £11 per head delivered to our room due to covid we agreed and paid the additional £44. We were also asked if we would like a quiet room or a room with a view we selected the view (see pictures). The first night we decided to eat at the hotel big mistake my wife ordered fish chips and mushy peas I ordered steak pie and potato, when the meals arrived I looked at my wife's meal which was a piece burnt fish frozen not fresh mushy peas which were dried out and rock hard, my meal was a small steak pie and a spoonful of mashed potato with a little pot of gravy and not a vegetable in sight. We called over a staff member who took away the fish meal and within 3 minutes returned with another bit of fish on the same plate with the dried up peas and warmed up chips, the member of staff returned to see if the meals were ok, we both said no we told her that the meals were not worth the money being charged, we were refunded the cost of my wifes meal £13.00. Food like that should not be served to paying guests. Terrible experience.

We stayed for 2 nights whilst visiting the wonderful city of Edinburgh. Having travelled up from Newcastle via the train, it took all of 2 minutes to reach the hotel located just at the south side of Waverley Station off Market St, perfect and well placed to visit the Old Town behind the hotel and New Town in front of the station. Check in was friendly, smooth and easy, with complimentary Costa stamps supplied with the room cards that could be used at the bar to obtain a decent cup of coffee, a nice little touch.

We were offered a choice of rooms and chose a quiet room, that was at the rear on the 3rd floor, which turned out to be ideal. Not the best view to be honest, but to be fair after leaving the hotel after breakfast, we didn't return until circa 11pm onwards, so we closed the curtains anyway!

We both found the beds a tad firm, but nothing to spoil a reasonable sleep. Shower room probably could do with a revamp, but wasn't drastic, and was certainly more than adequate. Plenty of space in the bedroom.

The buffet breakfast was smashing with a decent selection. Only disappointments (very minor again) were that the sausages were a tad greasy and the fried eggs didn't have runny yolks, but appreciate that whilst being kept hot under the heat lamps they will continue to cook, so virtually impossible to keep runny. I'm sure had I been that bothered/concerned I could have requested fresh ones to be fried and I'm sure the staff would have obliged, but I was more than happy to eat the ones provided. Loved the small pastries, always a treat whilst away! Back to porridge & blueberries again at home!!

So overall we were more than satisfied with our stay, and will probably re-book for our next visit to Edinburgh.

Booked jury’s inn for 2 nights in Edinburgh as I had used Jury’s inn in Nottingham and the experience in Edinburgh was completely different and not in a good way.
The first evening we ate in the bar and ordered fish and chips , when the food came the fish was a frozen piece and burnt. I tapped my knife on the top and the batter didn’t break. The mushy peas were pebbles and not the smooth consistency as should be. I returned the food and was presented with another fish on top of the same mushy peas and chips. My husband ordered pie and mash and that is exactly what he got 1 pie and 1 scoop of mash, no veg. The two meals were £13 each and when I complained I was refunded the money for the fish. The next morning breakfast was delivered to our room. This was a oat pot with a small bottle of orange juice, choc au pain and fruit, picture attached. This was £11 each. We had a 12 hour tour booked and was looking forward to a good start to the day. On our last morning we found a lovely cafe for our breakfast up the road from the hotel and this was the same price as £11 we paid at jury’s in. My husband got a full English and I got pancakes. I would not recommend this branch of Jury’s and would not return.

We booked this hotel for joint birthday trip to Edinburgh, The hotel was ideal location not too far away from Princes Street but close enough to bars and restaurants. We arrived to the hotel reception which was lovely presented the receptionist asked us for a room with a view but we would hear noise or a quite room without a view. Obviously we chose the quiet one which looked over a vacant area which we weren't too bothered about. The room wasn't what we expected at all there was stains on the floor, stains on the ceiling, chipped furniture and old decor. Which wasn't what we expected due to the pictures making it look fantastic. But I have to mention the bed was uncomfortable as it was very hard laying on it, myself and my husband were uncomfortable for the 2 nights we stayed there. But as for the room it was just very dated and could of done with a paint job if i'm honest. The only thing that was good about this hotel was the location.

Stayed here with my husband for two nights on the third floor with a view of the bins and a building site. Our room was modern and clean but very small. There was just enough room to walk around the bed. Personally I needed more space, it felt really cramped. There was a full length mirror and plugs at either side of the bed which is always good and most importantly, it's in a perfect location. On our last day we noticed some steps at the back of the hotel which are a short cut right onto the royal mile. Wish someone had told us about this when we arrived as we'd been walking the long way all weekend.
You get 40% off parking at the Holyrood NCP which is a 5 minute walk away.
We ate breakfast one of the mornings and it was a nice buffet, you can get a good full English but there are so many lovely places to eat in the area I'd recommend looking around and booking in advance to avoid a long wait if you fancy something else.

The bed was very comfortable
The location was really convenient, located at the edge of Old Town but walking distance into the city centre and New town.
The view from the hotel facing the street was also really nice
The whole check in process was frustrating, we checked in online and I asked for a special request for an earlier check in as we arrived at 11 and the check in was only at 3, they responded and said they will try their best to accommodate us. When we arrived at the hotel at 12 it was a definitive 'no' without even looking at the system. We were told to come back at 3pm. We arrived back at 14:55 and the check in process took around 15 minutes, there seemed to be some uncertainty if there was a room ready for us at 3pm, I am not sure why this is. I also don't know what the point of checking in online was if it still took around 15 minutes to check in at 3pm. Due to COVID certain health and safety protocols were put in place and I could see that the staff were diligently following this, however as a guest in the hotel it feels very restrictive and mundane not like you would want a holiday to be. Example - The waiting area by the front desk which according to the pictures is a seating area, all of the chairs have been removed and its just an empty space. The same applies for the breakfast area. I understand this is a COVID measure , however this led to guests sitting around on the floor near the front desk as people clearly want to sit down, especially while waiting for others to check in. Therefore, I don't see why socially distanced chairs could not be placed in this area. The same sentiment for the breakfast area. This is what most local restaurants and business in the area are doing. The room was a suitable size, the wardrobe space was only enough for someone staying the weekend and not really much more space for a stay beyond that. The room did not seem as though it was thoroughly cleaned as there were marks on the mirrors and the remote control was dusty. In the bathroom there were 4 light fixtures, only one had a lightbulb in which created a very dim light whilst in the bathroom. There was water damage and rust in and around the bath tub. Breakfast was included in our price but due to COVID we had to organise a collection slot for a packed breakfast, the portion size was tiny enough for a child, nothing compared to a breakfast you would dish up for yourself. I don't see why people could not have organised time slots for a sit-down breakfast as there is enough space for socially distanced tables. Overall disappointing , Ideal place I you just need a bed for the night.

A well-located, attractive hotel for short trips. The decor may seem a bit older, but everything is functional, clean and attractive. The service is extremely good and friendly, you get everything you need. The rooms are large, and some of the bathrooms even have bathtubs with showers. Everything was clean and disinfected. If you book with breakfast, you can't eat in the restaurant at the moment, of course, but the hotel has a great solution for that too: Prepared bags with plenty of breakfast and a "hot roll" (bread rolls with a selection of eggs, ham, sausages, etc.). There is tea and coffee in the room, and you sleep well in bed. You can get to the main train station quickly, and there is also a taxi station right in front of the hotel. Tip: One of the numerous small alleys ("Close") leads from the hotel courtyard directly up to the Royal Mile and delicious restaurants and shops (
A real advantage, because you can get back to the hotel just as quickly from the Royal Mile and a good meal down the stairs). The hotel will be renovated from January and will be even more appealing. In addition, you can quickly get to Newtown from there and up Calton Hill via small stairs. The price / performance ratio is particularly good here - I'll book there again next time!
