Nestled in the heart of Oxford, the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel garners appreciation for its prime location, convenient for sightseeing, though some guests mention noise disruptions. The hotel's cleanliness receives commendation, with well-maintained rooms and common areas; however, room servicing can be hit-or-miss. While the amenities, including a notable pancake machine, add comfort to the stay, opinions on value for money are less favorable, with some travelers finding the hotel overpriced. The staff's friendliness stands out, despite sporadic lapses in service quality. Mixed feedback is given concerning the atmosphere and room conditions, with calls for updates in decor and refurbishments.

Good location but no guest parking anymore, which is a shame. The nearest car park is nearly 10 minutes' walk away. Our 'very nice ground floor room' (or so it was described by the very nice receptionist) was in fact on the lower ground, a couple of flights of stairs down a corridor and had a rather forgettable sad view of the bins. It was compact but freshly decorated and very clean. As it was part of two communicating rooms, soundproofing was not perfect and we were disturbed at 23.30 by the guest in the other room making a rather noisy phone call in Dutch but other than that it was quiet and the bed was very comfortable. The towels were tiny and our request to have two extra towels in the evening was never met (we flagged this up at reception the next day). Good shower. Good breakfast too - my husband had the full English and enjoyed it, served by very pleasant, helpful staff, although it seemed to come way after other guests had been served.I'd rate it good overall but not good value for money as we paid nearly £200 a night.

We visited on August 6 2020 for one night. Everything was perfect. The classic double room was sumptuous with high quality bedding ( I am an expert in judging bedding!) and beautiful decor. Location was central and ideal. We parked at St Clement’s and paid £20 for 24 hours parking which we thought was ok for a central Oxford location and an easy 5 minute walk to the hotel.

Continental breakfast wasn’t good and the only disappointment. Everything else about the hotel exceeded our expectations.

The jewel in the crown of this beautiful hotel with such fabulous decor and clear and careful social distancing was Nella, in charge of reception, who guided us through the appropriate procedures and also offered cheery help about how to make the best of our trip. Nella offered us advice about where to visit and where to eat. We followed her advice and were delighted with the outcome. We were impressed with the dedication of all staff and would not hesitate to visit again soon. I recommend this hotel absolutely.

The Eastgate’s location is excellent- right next to the beautiful Botanic Gardens and Magdalen college opposite. It seems to be undergoing ongoing works at present- the space behind the hotel is a building site/car park, which means if you are on the lower ground floor (401-404) your window will look on to bins and parked cars. The rooms are quirkily and nicely recently refurbished, with vast numbers of sockets and USB ports, and showers nice enough to please even this confirmed shower phobe. They are small (but not unusually so, this is Oxford, after all) and the walls in ours were thin enough to distinctly hear next door’s conversation. The hotel is taking its COVID obligations seriously, which meant that breakfast the first two days was a distinctly disappointing pre order of muffins and panini sandwich and yoghurt. It perked up on the last day to extend to proper service and a cooked breakfast.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we soon realised the confusion of the two ladies behind the desk. They could not find our reservation, even after being shown a booking confirmation. It took 20 minutes to be told they have manually booked a room and we will have to wait for a cleaner to visit an empty room.

We sat in the bar and an hour and twenty minutes after our arrival we were told our room was ready. My partner was asked to secure the room with a debit card which is normal, in case of any spending (we had already pre paid for the room and the confirmation email confirmed this). We were also offered breakfast which we accepted which we knew would add a total of £20 on the card.We were very disappointed with the room, tiny shower, tiny room with peeling paint on the walls. We felt as though we were given a ‘reserve emergency room’ for when things went wrong.

Putting that aside, we were determined to enjoy our stay and the breakfast was lovely for the price and a wide choice. We checked out and confirmed that the breakfasts were being added to the card details stored before we left.

However this evening, a few hours after we left this lunchtime, my partner has checked his bank account and has seen that the original payment when booking for £163 has been taken which we confirmed when we arrived with our booking confirmation but also another £202 has been taken from the card since!!!! (Breakfasts are £10 each - £20 should have been taken).

Awful - don’t go there.

We chose this hotel for a 3 night break for our first visit to Oxford.
On the plus side, it is ideally located within walking distance of all the attractions in Oxford so did not have to use a car.Reception staff were welcoming, the room was quiet and comfortable with a spacious bathroom including an effective rainstorm shower.Excellent choice of cooked breakfasts with many special items, restaurant staff were efficient and friendly, keeping everything replenished.
We have stayed in many Mercure hotels in the UK and France and have never had any complaints but on this occasion it does appear that Mercure have "taken their eyes off the housekeeping ball". On arrival we noticed that the room was stiflingly hot and the thermostat did not allow the temperature to be changed so we reported this to reception who unhelpfully advised us that the engineers had said it was an old system that could not be thermostatically controlled and that there had been many complaints from other guests!!We therefore resorted to keeping the window open although it was 3C outside.Whilst opening the windows, we noticed paint flaking off the window frames which had clearly been happening for some time. We also noticed cobwebs on the bedside lampshade and a thick layer of dust on the shelf under a table in the bedroom-not very reassuring at a time of anti virus measures when cleaning should be very thorough.

This was a centrally located hotel, walking distance from everything, and only a 15 minute walk to the train. The hotel staff were very accommodating and friendly, we arrived early and they held our bags for us so we could explore until check in time, at check out we asked if they could hold our bags since our train didn't leave until the evening and this also was no problem. My friend who was also staying here thought her room was a little small and they allowed her to switch rooms without any issue. The room we stayed in was so comfortable, the bed was large and very I slept really well. I saw another review having issues with the temperature of their room but my room's air-conditioning worked perfectly and made such a difference. Signs everywhere insisted on keeping your distance and there were hand sanitisers everywhere, it felt very safe. I highly recommend staying here!

We stayed one night and were allocated room 111, which was a very nice double room with two windows in the room and 2 in the bathroom. They were decorating in the corridor when we arrived to the first floor and were in our way when we got through the door, no one warned us decorating was being done. It was a luxury room with complimentary soft drinks in the fridge, a safe and ironing facilities, tea and coffee maker. There was a dual head shower but shower tray got full quite quick and presume plug hole must be trapped with hair. Shower screen could be bigger to prevent floor getting wet. Nice big tv with two chairs around a coffee table and at the dressing table. You can hear people entering and leaving their rooms, so rooms are not soundproof and you can hear some street noise. The room appeared clean and modern with air conditioning. The kind reception staff allowed us to check in early to allow us to rest prior to visiting the natural history museum and the new oxford theatre. Everything was in walking distance including the train station. Biscuits were also provided which were welcomed. Our stay included breakfast in the price which is served from 7am to 10am on a weekday.

The hotel is certainly in a great location but definitely didn’t feel like we were staying in a 4 Star hotel!

We had a classic double but felt very compact, wardrobe space was very minimal and no drawers at all apart from small desk drawer to store things in. Difficult keeping room tidy with lack of storage space.

We would have expected more than one coat hanger for 2 people staying for 3 nights! There was no provision of sanitary bags in bathroom just an empty holder on shelf. I’m assuming room cleaning / towel replacements were not being carried out due to Covid safety but would have expected at least a quick room check to empty bins, top up tea / coffee / milk / loo rolls etc or maybe this is just on request. Just very surprised, rooms are not touched at all during your stay and nothing mentioned when booking or at check in! Hand sanitiser station on 2nd floor did not work at all during our stay but there were hand sanitiser bottles in lobby, bar area and restaurant area.

Bathroom was a nice size and really nice shower, toiletries were minimal, just basic shampoo, conditioner, tiny tablet of soap that’s all, no shower gel but shops are close by so can buy locally at Boots / Superdrug and Primark were great for a cheap set of 10 hangers!

Breakfasts were nice enough but not a great selection, breakfast staff were lovely and very attentive.

I’m sure if we’d made a call down to reception and requested more hangers, sanitary bags, tea/coffee/milk, quick room check etc they may have obliged but felt being a 4 Star hotel this should have been included in the service, it certainly was in previous hotels we’ve stayed in recently!

Although pleasant enough, I’m afraid this would not be our first choice of hotel when returning to Oxford!

Unfortunately there are more negatives to this hotel than positives. I will start on a positive note. The location is excellent and although there appears to be no more guest parking, options can be found a short walk away. Check in was smooth and friendly. The public areas are well kept and although we didn’t make use of the bar area it was a nice welcoming space that clearly some thought has gone in to. We paid £161 for a night. Now at Oxford prices it was middle of the road. We had a room on the 3rd floor. Lift only goes to the second. The stair carpet was tired and worn and it was impossible to use the stairs without sounding like you were riding a horse. It disturbed our sleep and we weren’t right on top of them. The room it self was just average. It looked and felt very tired and in need of a re-furb. The hotel has just built a new annex at the rear and I can’t help thinking the money would of been better spent upgrading the rooms it has??
That said it was fairly clean few stray hairs in the bathroom but not dirty dirty. The tea and coffee facilities are very poor for £160 a night. Having stayed 2 nights before in a Fullers hotel in Stratford Upon Avon we had biscuits, cakes and a complimentary G&T all for £45 less a night. The bed wasn’t particularly comfortable and the pillows were stuffed with ‘Fresh Oxford air’. Speaking of air. The air con was a joke. The room was like a sauna and it wasn’t even a hot day. Hate to think was it’s like on a very sunny day. The bathroom looked like it had been recently renovated and the shower was good.
I finish with breakfast. The cooked breakfast was ok on the whole. Not a feast but good enough to start the day. There was plenty of choice from the buffet but the fruit juice was just coloured water !!! I’ve had more orange flavour in a banana!! Also why on earth in this day and age of trying to save the planet are you using plastic disposable cups individually wrapped in even more plastic??? Not acceptable at any level !!! The hotel is clearly trying to make improvements and I hope they get there as it’s a lovely building that needs some TLC

Hi, I know there is a lift on your right hand side once you enter the reception. The rooms are spacious and for people with wheelchair a lift is available. There is a 24 hours reception service and the restaurant has good range of food. You will be fine if you let them know in advance you would need bigger room and lift service due to the health issues.

Answer from John B

There is a small amount of parking at the hotel, but nowhere near enough for the number of rooms as this part of Oxford was built hundreds of years before cars were invented! We came by train/ taxi and it all worked well. If you must come by car I think you have to take your chances at the hotel or use the park and ride.

I think there is a car park a 15 minute walk away at the shopping mall, but I don’t think you can park overnight, I parked on the side of a road 10 minutes away
