Visited here in July and really enjoyed my stay. Clean, good food and great staff, especially Marco who gave my friends and I very good service. Would definitely recommend. Oh not to mention there is a lovely tipi bar outside in the gardens and the overall location is great.

Revoltingly hot, a dismal fan that blew warm air, and only below about 1cm of air from fan so would have made no difference even if the air was cool. No air con in rooms but rest of hotel is air conditioned. Makes no sense, would no recommend regardless of how nice rest of hotel is as didn’t sleep a wink due to boiling hot room.

We were booked to stay here last night after we had planned our visit for well over a year. We honeymooned here 10 years ago and we really wanted to mark our 10 year anniversary by staying again and enjoying York again. We have been looking forward to it for the moment we decided to come after we were treated incredible on our honeymoon (different owners then I’m told!). On arrival we were seen by a lovely lady (Laura) who checked us in but we were told our room was out of the main door and in the building to the side. It looked like a very shoddy student accommodation and our bellies just dropped. We were gutted :( on arrival to our room we were shocked to see it was so tiny and very basic. The bathroom was so small that two of us couldn’t really get in! The main window looked partly on the big hotel we should have been in and the train station car park. This room cost almost £200 and we booked over the phone. At no point did anybody tell us we wouldn’t even be in the main hotel. The noise from the trains was so loud and the room was so hot it was unbearable. We could have cried. We felt really disappointed. We rang the main desk and spoke to someone (I think it was someone in the main office) and was passed back through to reception. We spoke to Laura again who was absolutely lovely again (she saved me from crying!) who looked to put us in the main hotel but it was fully booked. We asked to cancel our stay and Laura was very understanding and gave us our money back. We then moved over to an amazing hotel the other side of the city which was just perfect. When you look forward to something for so long after it had been planned for well over a year, travelled for HOURS on one of the hottest days of the year to be this disappointed was gutting. We’re devastated somewhere so special to us now just leaves us feeling sad :(

We had a fantastic time at this hotel. The room was fantastic and was serviced well. A bottle of Champaign and chocolates were there in the room on arrival. The meals were very nice apart from when we booked they said we could have anything of the al r cart or the main menu but alas was not the case. We were only aloud £25 each allowance of the main menu which was I must say limited as to choice. When we asked about it, the staff and managers were confused how it was supposed to work. This was a bit of a let down. On our last day we were given a free bottle of wine and to choose from any of the menus. That was a shame as it was our last evening. Anyway they did address the situation. In particular we were very impressed with a waitress called Mercedes… she was an absolute wonder. She couldn’t do enough for us. In all, the hotel was a treat for us and the staff and surrounding were perfect. We would stay again but hopefully have less confusion over meals. By the way… York was wonderful.

We stayed there for one night last night. Our room was just a bit bigger than a cupboard. It was immaculately clean but so hot. No air con and a useless fan. I phoned and asked for a better fan and was given a dyson one straight away but nevertheless the room was stuffy small and hot. The breakfast was nice though you get pinned down to a time to attend which is strange. The hotel reception is lovely. It’s in a great location but I probably wouldn’t stay again due to the heat in the room and having no space to move around.

Following a last minute weekend break to York my partner and I received a ward welcome at the principal. Overall an enjoyable stay and we would consider the principal again but do believe some things need attention. Positively, the hotel is in a fantastic location. 5/10 minutes walk to any popular tourist spot, quite literally steps from the train station and right on the brink of the largest section of city wall. The main hotel is beautiful in communal areas and sue to our summertime stay we made extensive use of the beautiful gardens and pop up bar. Unfortunately, we feel conflicted due to the following points: room rate - I strongly believe the room rate should be cheaper for the newer building. I would personally happily pay a fraction more for the guarantee of a room in the older building filled with character and charm. We were unfortunately placed in the newer building and believe the rate paid was in excess of reasonable for this room. The room was small and walls are THIN. albeit pleasantly decorated, rooms appear to have just had furniture placed into them without concern for aesthetic and functionality. Our room had significant ceiling damage (previously repaired) however the workmanship appeared to be to a poor standard and not to the expected standard of a 5 star hotel. Further issue being the cleanliness of the room. The seal around the bath fixtures (particularly that on the item affixed into the bath wall below the tap) was ++discoloured and not appealing to a soak in the tub. The multifunctional dressing tables are fantastic excellent choice however upon lifting the mirror portion I was greeted by dust, glitter and crumbs from a previous occupier. Again, for the standards expected of a 5 star hotel this was not up to scratch. We did not spend extensive time in our room and therefore can say we simply “shut up and put up” without raising concern to the hotel staff - I guess you could argue we were not overly bothered however to request a full room inspection / clean / change of room (when we were already informed none of the preferable older rooms were available) was a wasted effort we preferred exploring the city. As aforementioned, should the price be amended to reflect both the quality and desirability of such rooms we may consider a return however at present, sadly we would not.

I booked for my parents to stay for 2 nights last week for a mini break, after they finally got married. They said the experience from start to finish of their stay was perfect. Friendly staff, beautiful clean hotel, fantastic room and incredible service. The staff found out they were on a mini moon and spoilt them which was lovely! They said everything about the hotel was fantastic and they will definitely be visiting again. Walking distance to the shops, bars, restaurants etc Great breakfast and very well organised with good selection. They also said the lady on the bar of an evening was extremely friendly and a credit to the hotel. (Charlotte) they think her name is. Thank you !

We stayed here for two nights while visiting York. It is a beautiful hotel- the pictures don’t do it justice. It also has a lovely history. The rooms were spectacular and very clean. There was a Dyson cool fan provided in our room, which was great for summer heat. The breakfast is very good.

My wife and I have just spent a wonderful few days at Principal York. We were there during the heat wave so our room was rather hot at night. Staff very courteous and helpful. Special mention to Mercedes and Marko in the Refectory Kitchen and Terrace who always got our day off to a good start (and end).

We arrived at 3pm and checked into our room swiftly. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. We got into our room which was extremely small. We paid for a standard double but the room felt like a Cosy double. The bed was also small ( more of a 3/4 quarter bed than a double) The beds are really hard also. Our Room was right next to the lift which rattled the wardrobe, we didn’t get much sleep due to the noise. Rooms get extremely hot. It was a wet weekend and the temperature outside was about 17 degrees. So not boiling hot however the room was boiling and we needed the fan on all night as no air con. I feel the cold as well so to say a room was hot means it was HOT. Breakfast the next day was a disaster. There are big inconsistencies in staffing. Some staff are fantastic however We got unlucky where the person walked us to a table and left. We had no idea what we were suppose to do. After waiting ten minutes I went up to get a plate. There were no plates left so after asking countless members of staff if we could have plates we were just stood by the plates for 15 minutes. Some people sat by there table to have their pot of tea or coffee ( which we weren’t offered the first morning) Once we sat down to eat our breakfast it was reasonable though. Food it changed frequently. Which is good. The pool is very basic for a four star hotel. Jacuzzi and sauna were fine. No real issues. Staff were great when we asked for a room change. They moved us rooms and we did have a much better nights sleep. Room was still small and very basic for a four star note. They have a few nice touches with plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolates. The hotel is in a fantastic location and it was ideal for us. I think next time though we’d go to a smaller & cheaper hotel in the town though as weren’t blown away by this one. Times are tough after covid and maybe the hotel is struggling with staffing and training. Customers may be disappointed paying such high prices for such basic small rooms.
