A boutique hotel in the heart of York just a 10-minute walk from York Minster. The building is a Grade II Listed Regency townhouse with sash windows, high ceilings, a sweeping central staircase, and ivy around the door. Inside you’ll find pantries stocked full of treats, great restaurant food throughout the day, drinks from the bar and a spa centred on bespoke therapies. There’s 39 bedrooms, including three suites that are dotted around the building’s three floors. Each one has its quirks courtesy of the building’s heritage detailing. The rooms feature a flat-screen Smart TV, tea/coffee making facilities, an iron and hairdryer in the wardrobe. The spa sits down in the arches of the cellar. It’s a cocooning world of bespoke wellbeing experiences. There are five treatment rooms, including a room for two. And a soothing space for post-treatment relaxation. And the chefs craft dishes from breakfast through to supper and the bar team serves all day. GuestHouse are passionate about creating special experiences and for those wanting to book a larger space, No.1 is home to The Bootham Room, a private dining space, ideal for a larger family lunch, weekend get together with a dozen friends, or a celebratory event. A paid private car park is located on site. York Railway Station can be reached in 15 minutes by foot.

My wife and I have visited the bar and Spa since the hotel opened earlier this year. We try and have monthly treatments to get us through our first year of parenthood. The hotel and Spa can not be faulted and I am so glad we have this place on our doorstep. Olive at the spa Is incredible and I recommend anyone booking to request her. She has fantastic knowledge and understanding when it comes to massage and treatments. As someone who has used many hotel spas the massage I had today was one of the best of my life. Olive explains things clearly and gives great tips on after care. I highly recommend the hotel restaurant, fantastic food. Finally they also do great Whiskey sours…

We recently visited York with some friends and had the pleasure of staying in No 1 – so glad we did. The service, from the whole team, was excellent. The building is Georgian and very stylishly decorated with two good sized sitting rooms and a well-stocked bar. Around one of the rooms at picture rail height there is a model train – very popular with visiting children and adults! On the first floor there is a well-stocked pantry – chilled water and juices, biscuits, home-made cake – popular with everyone. The two rooms I’d booked were very well presented and we all liked them. Breakfast was very tasty and I especially liked that so much of the produce in the hotel was from Yorkshire – edibles and drinks. Secure parking at the back of the hotel. A great find and we will be investigating the two sister guest houses in Bath and Brighton. Very well done.

Lovely one night getaway at Number 1. It’s chic, super-friendly and perfectly placed for exploring York. Our room (#6) was at the back of the building so nice and quiet. I suspect rooms at the front may have had a bit of road noise. The decor was stylish with a four-poster bed and record player plus a selection of vinyl to play. Staff were exceptional - all very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We had lovely coffee on the small terrace at the front and raided the pantry - stocked with homemade cake, popcorn, ice cream, sweets and soft drinks - when we got in from dinner. We didn’t try the food but expect it would have been fantastic. If you’re looking for a stylish stay within 10 mins of York’s amazing walls, this is the place to go.

Book direct with this wonderful hotel, for an additional 10% from the menu and a glass of fizz on arrival. We stayed for one night and it was really nice. Wonderfully relaxed vibe about the place, lovely quality linens, and little things like a record player in the room with albums available, and my new found favourite station on the radio by the bed - Smooth chill 👌. The staff are wonderful and honestly, if you want a great stay, 10 minutes from the Minster, this is the place. Oh... and a help yourself pantry for guests if you get peckish, with snacks, sweets and drinks, all complimentary! What's not to like!

We had a wonderful stay. and small family wedding meal at the hotel on the 11th June 2022. From calling in to enquire about a wedding meal to the wedding day itself the staff were amazing nothing was too much trouble and any enquires dealt with efficiently and promptly. Its very clear the staff enjoy their work and are proud of the hotel, they very effortlessly do all they can to see that guests are happy and enjoying there stay. the staff know the exact amount of interaction required to meet guests needs. we had our bedroom for the night upgraded which was a lovely surprise. I will be recommending the hotel to any family and friends that need an overnight stay or small intimate family meal. It felt like staying with family and friends in the best way possible. the hotel has been beautifully renovated. the team in the hotel are amazing the owners of the hotel should be very proud of the staff they have running it.

We were made to feel that our visit to No 1 was valued and that it was important that we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The attention to detail was lovely and all of the staff were friendly, courteous and nothing was too much trouble, but not intrusive. The luggage pick-up bike at the station was quirky and super efficient, setting the scene perfectly! (Thanks Neil.) Our room was great - airy, spacious and spotlessly clean and there were lots of different areas inside and outside of the hotel to sit and relax in. The floral displays were beautiful. Wining and dining at No 1 isn't cheap, but, you get what you pay for! Looking forward to a return visit. (One negative - the complimentary slippers - unwearable! 😆)
