On arrival the price of the stay was disclosed to my partner, this was a surprise Birthday of which the hotel were aware because I asked for the birthday package which for the price was not worth it, 4 crap balloons and a daft banner which seemed to be used before. The room wasn’t the cleanest the window ledge was dirty with dead flies, sanitary wrappers on the toilet floor, lamp beside the bed not working and the socket was very loose. Air con did not work in the room. Went for dinner as part of the package, the waiter unfortunately suffering from bad body odour, there was numerous wasps in the room and it was apparent we were moved into a different room due to a booking, as part of the package it was £27per person towards the dinner which would have brilliant if it was not overpriced main meals alone were a minimum £24. I paid for the additional items in the restaurant then went to York centre for the night. Breakfast was also part of the deal however again wasps in the room and both my partner and I ordered full cooked breakfast with poached eggs. There was only one slice of toast each, the bacon was rubber (clearly cooked some time before serving), the eggs were under cooked and the beans were cold. Had to ask for refills on the apple juice. On checking out I was requested to again pay for extra items at the dinner and only on the management seeing my bank statement was it accepted that I had paid for it. Overall disappointed as this was ment to be a surprise relaxing time for my partners 30th birthday which it wasn’t.

Reception staff very welcoming and friendly. Entrance loby and toilets are stunning and very clean. Sadly, however that was as good as it got. When we first entered our room it smelt very badly of cigarette smoke and was not clean, albeit a big lovely space. We found mould in the windows, dirt on the bedding and doors. We also found a plastic cup on the floor. We did not have a good night sleep either. The ventilation system was extremely noisy and there was no way of turning this off which also made the room hot. We were on the top floor yet it sounded like we could hear people walking around above us which must have also been the heating? We were also surprised to not see any hotel information in the room such as how to call reception or the emergency evacuation procedure? However the tea/coffee supplied in the room was ample. We were then treated to masonry drilling from 8am which was non-stop - not ideal for what was meant to be a relaxing break. The breakfast was ok but we were not offered any condiments or additional drinks. At checkout again staff were friendly but did not ask how the stay was and therefore no opportunity to address the issues above. Benefit is the location, easy walk into the town.

Wow. We just spent two nights at this wonderful hotel. The room was beautiful and the original decor of the hotel is Arts and Crafts, and they have tried to keep this detail throughout. We ate in the restaurant one night and we couldn’t fault the food and the ambiance. The breakfast was innovative and tasty. Excellent chefs and kitchen staff. I was I’d taken a pic of my dessert. It was so beautifully presented. If we visit York again, we will definitely stay here. Loved every minute. Lovely staff and surroundings. So respectfully preserved.

We stayed here for one night last August and I was very surprised and impressed by our room. The exterior of the hotel appears very dated so I wasn’t expecting much but honestly the room was lovely! We were put in one of the rooms outside of the main hotel building. It was nice, modern and very clean. The hotel is located in an easy enough location to access the touristy spots.

My mum and I had a fabulous stay for 2 nights. It’s a lovely designed and decorated hotel and the room followed suit. Great bathroom with excellent shower and lots of hot water( us ladies like it hot) . We had a dinner b&b option which was amazing value and the food is of a high standard. Loved the petit fours with coffee option. Staff were extremely helpful. Very clean throughout. We caught the bus which is 50 yards from the hotel, super easy and inexpensive and they ran very regularly. Took 5-10 mins to the centre. I will definitely stay here again on our next visit to York, thanks to all the staff.
