The St. James's Hotel and Club Mayfair is often praised for its prime location and impeccable cleanliness, with travelers appreciating the attentive service and inviting atmosphere. While the rooms are recognized for their tidiness and comfort, some guests feel they are compact and show signs of wear. Opinions on value are divided; some guests consider the hotel's services and location to justify the expense, whereas others find the pricing steep. The best measures of a society and its institutions are most accurately revealed when they are burdened with difficult challenges to manage, and choices to make.

Arriving unannounced on the doorstep of the St. James Hotel and Club in Mayfair, London during the swelling days of the COVID-19 pandemic; we held little more than hope for safe harbour. Having just barely escaped the closing borders of Morocco by flying to London, anxieties were running high.

Stepping through the front door of the gorgeous 5 star boutique St. James Hotel was like passing through a portal to Nirvana. The preceding days and nights of chaos were assuaged by the warm and friendly greeting at reception. We were gently received and efficiently checked in by the Front Office Manager, Alice, who very quickly found us a lovely room to enjoy.

In less than the time required to say ‘unpack’, we found ourselves enjoying a world class mojito in ‘William’s Bar and Bistro’, which is comfortably accessed on the main floor. Just a little slice of Heaven.

The Hotel itself is perfectly situated and suited for the London visitor who wants to explore the town on foot. All of the iconic venues to visit and landmarks to be viewed were well within easy walking distance.

The St James is home to ‘Seven Park Place’, a Michelin star restaurant guided flawlessly by Chef William Drabble. Exquisite French cuisine is prepared with the finest British ingredients and presented in an elegant ambience. Res Ipsa Loquitur…

Suffice to say that our stay with the St James Hotel and Club became the lasting highlight of our trip. To provide accurate context, consider that each of the staff who attended us with such gracious aplomb did so in the face of absolute uncertainty regarding their own COVID-19 related futures. Consummate professionals all.

Tucked up Park Place just off Piccadilly the St James offers good accommodation, a small bar and a reasonable restaurant. We stayed in a suite downstairs on the ground floor which had good natural light and as is the norm in older London hotels it had an interesting quirkiness about the room layout…..my only complaint would be the shower over the bath which required some gymnastics to get into and would be impossible for those less agile. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is fabulous with bright cheerful staff enthusiastic to see that your day kicks off well. The location of the hotel means it is easy to get to any of the Mayfair restaurants and the doorman is only too happy to organise a taxi. There is a small parking bay making drop offs and pick-up easy.

The staff were so kind in helping me to plan some surprises for my friend, no request was too much trouble and they went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional.

The hotel furnishings were beautfiul and the location of the hotel is excellent for shopping. It’s also tucked away on Park Place so really quiet and no road noise.

Our stay made me feel a lifetime away from the stresses of young children. It was an escape into luxury heaven! I particularly enjoyed the beautiful bar and the breakfast was first class.

I can not thank the staff enough for a truly magical and memorable stay. John Hennessy on reception was really personable to us. Winston at breakfast was very patient and fun. I also wanted to thank the pastry chef for a delicious chocolate birthday cake and Nicholas Davis for his marvellous care of us throughout our stay.

We also went to the hotel’s restaurant Seven Park Place for dinner which was one of the best meals of my life, every dish was exquisite. Christopher really looked after us too.

Thank you so much

The hotel is in a fantastic location, tucked out of the way right in the heart of the smartest neighbourhood in central London, close to many of the big sights and high end retail. The highlight of the hotel is the excellent food, the main restaurant of William Drabble serves imaginative and well executed food and thoroughly deserving of its accolades from the Michelin boys and girls. The service was equally on the mark, attentive, charming, funny and always efficient. Breakfast pretty much the same. The real problems were the room, as a Hyatt loyalist and having spent more than 100 days last year in their hotels I booked this overnight stay with my wife on loyalty points, maybe why we were allocated room 103. Really this should not be a letting room. It is tiny, at street level and directly outside is the staff and tradesmans entrance which is obviously busy most of the time, and therefore noisy. The room was very warm and when I turned the thermostat right down, very warm! It made no difference. After a lovely day of museums and retail therapy returned to the room in need of a cuppa. There is no in-room facilities (why?), so called room service, twice, no response so gave up. Next morning after a stifling nights sleep one of the hotel staff walked into the room unannounced, could have been embarrassing but they shot straight back out again. When it came to check out, I announced that the room was too warm and there appeared to be a fault with the thermostat. To be ignored by both the concierge and receptionist. When I asked if anyone was listening to me the receptionist nodded and then asked if I wanted to check out, showing no interest in my issues and seeming to want rid of me as quickly as possible. A big shame, put a downer on my weekend escape with my wife. Come on St James’s, you can do some things very well but complacency seems to have taken root in some parts

Dear David, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am very disappointed to hear that you did not have the experience you were hoping for and the specific concerns have been raised with the appropriate departments, especially with regards to the level of service you experienced. St James Hotel and Club is well renewed for the club environment and the “home away from home” experience. We are committed to providing the warmest of service and want to ensure all our guests have a memorable stay from the moment of arrival, to the time they depart so of course, I am very sorry to read that you felt otherwise. With regards to the allocation of your rooms, I hope you will appreciate that the St James Hotel and Club is built on an old Victorian building, and as such presents bedrooms and public areas in different levels and floors. As we understand this is a matter of personal preference, we have now updated your profile and will ensure that next time, should you give us another opportunity of your patronage, you will be given a higher floor room. Believe it or not, we have guests that particularly request the floor and bedroom you were allocated in. I hope you will give us an opportunity to make amends by making a return visit, I encourage you to contact me directly at stefano@stjameshotelandclub.com , so that I can make sure you will remember your stay with us for the right reasons. Yours sincerely, Stefano Lodi

An unassuming hotel tucked away on a quiet street was my initial appeal to this location. However, I was blown away by the amazing attention paid to the guest experience, down to the smallest details. Rooms were attended to and restocked with fresh toiletries daily without request. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and went above and beyond my expectations to ensure my family had a wonderful stay. The concierge went so far as to track down the sellers of the fragrance that filled the halls for me to purchase because I loved it so much. The hotel is in close proximity to so many tourist gems and the staff was very kind in helping to navigate our stay. I rave about this hotel to anyone who asks - it truly elevated an already beautiful experience in London.

As Londoners spending a weekend as tourists in our own City we spent two days in the comfort of St. James.
From the moment we climbed the short flight of steps to reception we were greeted with a friendly face and nothing was too much trouble throughout our stay. On probably the hottest weekend of the year the excellent air conditioning in Room 401 was a blessing!
The room was furnished in a lovely modern style with a small sitting area and marble bathroom with good amenities and a very large and comfortable bed.
We dined one night at the excellent William Drabble Michelin starred restaurant and had a great time.
We strongly recommend St James.

This was our first stay at the St. James Hotel and Club and our first real experience of Mayfair having stayed for many years in Knightsbridge.

We had a warm welcome from the young doorman who was resplendant in his uniform of traditional overcoat and hat as he helped us out of our taxi and carried our bags into the lobby.

We were then met by Graham the concierge who welcomed us in and after we checked in he showed us to our room and later he again made sure we had settled in while we had a drink in the bar.

Everyone was welcoming and friendly and we had a table reserved for us for a bar meal in the evening. The quality of the food, drink and service was very good and after a pleasant hour or so we went to our room.

The facilities in the Superior room were modern, clean and luxurious. The only thing we had to ask for which came very quickly was non dairy milk and decaf tea and coffee. There are snacks and drinks in the room which you can buy but it woukd have been nice to have complimentary biscuits on the tea tray.

Breakfast the next day was of high quality and unlike other places we have stayed in the Full English meant you could also have anything from the continental self service as well. Nadir was our waiter and his exuberance for service and attention to detail was infectious.

We asked his name and those of others as we not only like to get to know the staff but also mention them in reviews. Its a shame though that they don't wear name badges as it would be easier to identify them. Also there was no feedback forms in the rooms which is unusual.

Although everyone was friendly and attentive it would have been nice if all of the staff not just Graham welcomed us and called us by our names which we have had at other boutique five star hotels.

We stayed for two nights and on the last day after we checked out we went for a Sunday morning wander and came back for our bags before getting a taxi back to the train Station.

This hotel is ideally situated for St. James Park, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, Bond Street and Leicester Square.

Reception was perfect and they thanked us for staying and hoped to see us again, which I'm sure they will, but again no name badges to thank them personally, especially the young lady who went outside in the cold to get us a taxi.

This intimate hotel has the most attentive service one could hope to find. The room, large, beautiful and included a private patio seating area and greenery all around. The location was perfect for walking to Bond Street shops. Wonderful restaurants around as well. But, the staff even outshined all of this. John Hennessy, the manager, was ever-present. He even walked us several blocks to assure we got to the correct Pharmacy that was to perform our Covid tests, ( which he also set up), for our departure. He had wonderful recommendations for a wine store and meals, all while keeping a most watchful eye on the front. He corrected, without our knowledge, a snafu that our travel agent had made, which resulted in a wonderful tour of London in a private car for us. The price of the room was very fair and it included breakfast as well. Located on a side street near the Ritz, it felt very safe and was very clean and inviting while feeling most British and current at the same time. The artwork was extraordinary and the bar was beautiful. No room for improvement, here.

We paid nearly £1000 for two nights at this hotel. When we went to pay for the extras at the end of our stay they had added over £100 in service charges that they led us to believe were for cleaning the room! At no point did they state these were optional. Some they knocked off at the hotel whilst we were there as a "token of goodwill" still without advising that they were optional. We were given a printed receipt of what we were expecting to pay on the understanding that the total showing on the receipt would be less the £50 deposit taken on arrival. When we got home on checking our barclaycard they had added all the fees back on and charged us over £150 more than the agreed total. After serval arguments they took the fees off again and said it was "human error". However the member of staff had physically taken the fees off on the computer and printed out the receipt. When we were gone she must have physically added them again. I have since read other reviews and other people have had the same issues. PLEASE READ ALL THE REVIEWS. We had issues with heating, hot water, breakfast, no tea and coffee in the room and I could go on.... This is not a 5 star hotel and the management is seriously bad, arrogant and think they above dealing with complaints.

John was an absolute delight!!
He cares so much for every guest and makes sure they're stay is as perfect as hoped for. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left he couldn't have been more helpful and intentive, we travelled from Belfast in a pretty stressful time during the corona virus but we had committed to doing a 36 hour trip to london after cancelling a 1 week trip to Italy.
John made us feel completely at ease the room was beautiful, cosy and very clean, we had a wonderful stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone!! Breakfast is pretty good too, thanks John!! 😏👌
