When I first booked this accommodation I didn't realise it was a Halls of Residence for students and was a little worried about how it would work. But I needn't have been. Fairly easy booking in, I don't remember reading anything that said I would need ID so it was a good job I had taken my driving licence with me. We were on the 4th floor, lifts available, and in our section there were 5 rooms, one kitchen, one toilet and one shower area. There was a locked door leading to these rooms so plenty of security.
When booking it says there isn't the chance to book meals, but what it doesn't tell you is that breakfast is free/included. On the ground floor there is a canteen where you can get a continental buffet. Plenty to eat and choose from. Booking out was quick and easy. Free Wifi was good, Easy to register and login.
We stayed 14th Sept (booked in July) so it turned out to be the day The Queen was taken to Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall and being so close to Piccadilly it meant we were able to walk to join the crowds in memory.

The only complaint really is that there wasn’t a kettle in the kitchen to make a drink, though there was a microwave which we could have used to heat a cup of water, but there were only two mugs in the kitchen, I looked in all the cupboards and there was nothing else we could use. For 5 rooms with up to 10 people staying this was disappointing.

Also the desk clerk didn’t explain the use of the key fobs properly. We had booked two rooms, so two fobs. My daughter went through the main door first, having tapped her fob to the security lock, I followed her through. When I got to my room my key fob didn’t work. Turns out it needed to have tapped the main door lock too as this was part of its activation. It needed to be registered as being used.

All in all this was a good place to stay and i would stay again.

The position of this hostel is one of the best in London: near Covent Garden, you can go walking to Westminster or to the City. The breakfast is continental, rich and tasty. I wrote "hostel" because the bathrooms are in common. The rooms are small but comfortable. The change of the bed sheets occurs weekly, ok, but I think that the bathrooms and the showers should be cleaned every day!

I actually live at this residence but I thought I would post a review to help travellers.

This is a LSE student accomodation that turns into a hotel come summertime. Sinks in each room with telephone and high-speed ethernet connection in each bedroom, although I am not sure if this is available to hotel guests during the summer. Composed of flats of between 4-6 rooms. If you can, try to book a room on the Mezzanine floor as these have been recently renovated with brand new kitchens.

Couldn't ask for a better location as is it three minutes walk to Covent Garden Tube, four minutes each to Tottenham Ct. Road and Holborn and walking distance to Soho, Leicester Sq., Piccadilly Circus, Waterloo bridge, British Museum etc. It's not luxury but if you want budget accomodations in the heart of London, this is your place. I consider myself fortunate to live here...I would pay triple if I wanted to stay in this area and rent a flat.

Hope this helped!

I'm an LSE alumnus and used to stay in this student dorm a couple years ago. A few days ago, I was here for a conference at the LSE. The staff at the reception is incredibly rude and after a while one just gives up asking any sort of questions. All other travelers I met had the same problem with the staff as me. At the reception, they just don't want to help and they make fun of the customers, laughing sarcastically among themselves after any question and their "witty" comeback.
Besides, there is supposed to be wifi in the communal area but one needs to know how to follow the simple steps to access it. The information they give you at the reception is incomplete and they do not care to try and understand the problem or ask an IT specialist about the proper way to inform the clients (fortunately fellow travelers help themselves...). The room was not very clean but the worst was the kitchen with its discusting plates and cutlery and the common shower (never washed by the cleaning staff apparently). the shower temperature can also not be changed and it's boiling.

I will never go back to this dorm and feel ashamed to be an LSE alumnus after witnessing this appalling level of service and the image this dorm gives of the LSE.

Basic accommodation in London. Cheapest residency for couples or friends or single person . It’s in the heart of London. Near Holborn station and walking distance to Leister square,, convent garden , china town. Cambridge circus and trap algae square. Lots of busses passing by just knowing where you going and the bus number. Good selection of fruits and continental breakfast. Clean and all beddings are clean.the only thing was the bathroom was outside the room and the shower room which is shared by residents and guest. On its floor. They clean it often so it’s clean. The door manned 24 hours. But sometimes only one staff so you need to take your own luggage at the storage place if you come early before check in. They give you the key. There’s no fan so so hot in the room and if you open the window the noise from neighbouring construction is irritable. It’s only good for one or two days stay. It’s also housed students from law university.staff are nice and helpful.very convenient to central London and main attraction

As a person that works within the industry I have to say that staff is completely untrained on customer service, no confidence whatsoever on problem solving, state of shared bathrooms absolutely disgraceful (you would think if they are shared they would pay extra attention to the state of them), no feel of management giving direction to staff at all in fact I don't think there was any management or supervision present during our stay which would be normally fine if there was the sense of leadership in any of the staff, place is super messy in all areas including the canteen where it wasn't being cleaned consistently during breakfast. I understand it is hard to keep a nice smell in the building while it is so big and there is no windows in the halls however even a simple air freshener would work and make such a difference!

Rooms were fairly clean during check in however after the experience in the bathroom you definitely look at everything in more detail hygiene-wise. The reception is super messy- you can see papers, boxes, everything out in the open which obviously doesn't give a great welcome especially when you see none of these things were well organised. Not to mention the keys to the room are really easy to get lost or are being left in the room - if they are this small they should at least attach some kind of card with room number or hotel information so that they are easy to spot.

Not to make it all seem bad..the location is absolutely great! In between two underground stations. You can walk around and find super dinner/bar or shopping locations. The stay is not super cheap or not super expensive which is good especially for only a few days stay and especially with London Accommodation prices, breakfast choice is nice but there was items of English Breakfast missing for sure which was a little bit disappointing. Even if there is more domestic tourism involvement to the place... come on! Who wouldn't want to have a full on English Breakfast in the morning?

Concluding:

- Staff means well and is helpful enough but need more training in most areas of customer service.

-Cleaning and organisation of public areas needs improvement.

-Great location for short stays.

-Cheap enough accommodation.

We booked this room with clear expectations that it was pretty basic but excellent location. Hotels.com disappointed with their vague description & incorrect advice (breakfast incl: it wasn’t; no TV: there was; no hair dryer: there was) but the place more than made up for it! We arrived on overnight flight from Canada at 11:00 am very tired but fully expected room would not be ready. The young gentleman at the desk (Apr 21/18) & Eric the security person, were so welcoming & helpful that they managed to have the room ready at noon. But that was just the beginning! The room they gave us (Grandma travelling with adult grandson) was a full suite on the top floor! I think these were staff units so not many of them. There are 2 elevators so no problem being on 12th floor & view was great!
The place was so clean, comfy beds & bedding & very quiet & secure.
The location was so handy to everything: Covent Garden; theatres: restaurants & corner stores. Lots of shops & Holborn tube station very close.
There was no breakfast at this time of year but apparently is during summer months. Many places close by offered breakfast though.
It is a student residence they rent from Apr to Sept so need to book early.
Highly recommend & would most certainly go back!

Bloody expensive for what it is. Yes this is London but this is just a bubble that one day it will burst.
The place is soulless, the rooms are small, the beds are small and bad, the toilet is common, the showers are timny (I cannot imagine how an obese person can fir their tiny shower!)
Overall a terrible property run by LSE, a great institution with a horrible, overrated residence.
Shameful!

Response from Stephanie S, Manager at LSE High Holborn Residence
Responded 19 Feb 2015
I am surprised to read this review of LSE High Holborn residence, which stands out amongst the many more positive experiences of other guests recorded here on Trip Advisor. High Holborn has undergone a programme of extensive refurbishment and most of our rooms have now been revamped to a higher specification. Had you reported your disappointment about the room to our Reception staff during your stay they would have done their best to move you to an alternative one. I am sorry that we did not manage to live up to your expectations on this occasion.

I love staying here, for the price you are paying you are getting a great place to stay. You have to share a bathroom, kitchen and toilet but I hardly see anyone in the flat so it's never bothered me. The location is great as it's so close to shops, Leicester Square, bars, tube stations, etc. The staff are always really helpful and you can always find someone in reception if you need any help. Everything is clean and tidy. The breakfast in the mornings are brilliant, there is so much to choose from, fruit, yoghurts, celerals, crumpets, muffins and different types of teas and coffees.

Excellent area to stay in at low prices, though there's been a 10%increase recently and that will encourage me to visit London using this accomodation less frequently.Anyway with the prices at the time I stayed, breakfast included, a place to cook your own food, a student style area to relax, play pool etcetera and the proximity to the West End, really there can be no complaints. It's not luxury exactly, but it is a luxury at 28 pounds a night. Not your thing however if you want en-suite and won't instead use the wash basin for a night.
