My daughter and I stayed at The Montague on the Gardens after watching the double showing of Harry Potter & The Cursed Child. As the hotel is only a 10 minute walk away, we checked in between part 1 and part 2. Having mentioned that I was bringing my daughter to London to watch the play when I booked, we were stunned to be greeted with some delicious treats in our room accompanied by some handmade mini Harry Potter books to "remind us of the journey so far"! My 12 year old was over the moon.
Generally, the staff just couldn't be nicer, more helpful or more professional. Check in was efficient, welcoming and friendly. I'd forgotten to ask for our preferred bed set up before arriving so they quickly moved us to a different room to accommodate this. We were greeted at the entrance and helped with our luggage to our room and shown how everything worked.

On our return, after the second part of the play, we decided to go to the bar for a cocktail and mocktail. My cosmopolitan was delicious and despite it not being on the menu, they made my daughter a "nojito" which is her favourite drink.

We then retired to our exceptionally comfy bedroom and my daughter ordered some chicken noodle soup from the room service menu, while I made us a hot chocolate each from the complimentary hot drinks in our room. The soup came quickly and was apparently delicious. There were plenty of places to plug in our various chargers and devices and we had a good night's sleep.

In the morning, I let my daughter sleep in and then we headed to breakfast. I had manged to get my days and times muddled and they'd already started to clear away. Despite this, they ushered us to a table for 2, checked with the chef and then offered us some eggs if we wanted any and showed us where the pastries, juices, cereals etc. were. They then took my coffee order. It was so kind of them as we love a hotel breakfast and would have been so disappointed to miss out. Finally, we checked out with the same level of friendliness and professionalism that we had experienced throughout our stay.

I have stayed at Red Carnation Hotels on several occasions and there are many reasons I keep coming back. They clearly have an excellent recruitment and training programme as I have never had a bad stay or come across any single member of staff that has been anything other than delightful. Thank you to everyone who helped to make our stay so enjoyable.

We had high expectations after reading all the reviews and we were not disappointed. It is obvious that the manager trains the staff well as everyone we encountered was polite, patient and happy to help out whenever possible. The rooms and common areas are full of charm and decorated wonderfully for the xmas holidays. The rooms and bathrooms are bright and well lit. There were plenty of amenities including bathrobes, slippers, free bottled water, etc. We especially enjoyed the full breakfast every morning. There are a variety of choices, both hot and cold items, and it is a joy to eat breakfast in such a warm and cute dining room. Our family lingered over breakfast to enjoy the atmosphere and the staff was diligent in refilling our tea or coffee. Because we had grandma with us, we did hail a taxi to some places but the young and able can easily get to all the interesting places with a combination of walking and public transportation. Good shopping (7 Dials market, Covent Garden among others) and restaurants were all around us. It was a true joy to come back to such a cute little hotel at end of a long day. The turn down service with goodies was also very much appreciated. It was exceedingly hard to say good-bye to this place and we hope to visit again soon. It will be nice to return during the warmer months to use the outdoor seating of the restaurant/bar. Good hotels in London come at a price, this one included, but we felt that the value we got from Montague on The Gardens was exceptional.

The Montague on the Gardens has a beautiful ground floor area with fireplaces and impeccable service. It was Christmas time so I wasn’t entirely surprised to spend £275 a night on a place like this but was a bit disappointed. I had called ahead to request a room with a bath tub and a fridge. Since the rooms don’t have fridges they said they would bring one in but we got to the room and there was no tub or fridge. The front desk was very accommodating and said they would give me another room with both, and even provided complimentary tea during the wait.
The second room had a tub and eventually a mini fridge was brought up. The room itself was lovely and well decorated but really small even for London standards. It would have been fine for 1 person but a real stretch for 2. I enjoyed our stay but at that price expected more

Absolutely wonderful hotel! I stayed here for a week in October 2022 in one of the solo rooms. The location is amazing, on a very quiet street in Bloomsbury just around the corner from the British Museum and a 5-minute walk from the Russell Square tube station, and an easy walk to Soho, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, and so on. There service was also perfect, from check in to departure and also in the bar, where I had a really nice dinner (curried shrimp with lychee and rice) and beer one evening. And, the hotel was immaculate, in perfect condition, and the rooms were beautifully cleaned every day. I also appreciated that the windows were double glazed so my room was super quiet. The negatives, as far as I was concerned, were that the solo rooms were really small, but you have to make a trade off somewhere - and the breakfast, at 26 pounds for Continental and 28 pounds for English breakfast, were ridiculously overpriced, especially for what you get. And, the coffee was at best mediocre. Happily, though, I found a couple of breakfast spots nearby (I particularly recommend Salt & Pepper just a few minutes walk away). One final note: the hotel adds 10 pounds a day service charge to your bill which you can ask to have removed. I think this is terribly deceptive; they should just add that to the base room price, which of course they don't want to do because that would make their rooms seem more expensive. Overall, I would give the hotel top marks and would definitely stay here again.

Dear Jeff, Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. I was happy that over all you enjoyed your stay with us at the Montague on the Gardens Hotel. In terms of the room sizes at the hotel, every room is different so should you come and stay with us again please do bear that in mind and we can assist in finding a room that will better suit your needs. Regarding the breakfast pricing, we do regular competitor checks on all of our pricing throughout the hotel and this is in line with similar hotels of our standard in the area. In terms of the optional nightly £10 service charge all of our guests are informed of this when they reserve with us, upon check in and check out from the hotel so I am sorry that you felt that we should add this to the overall room price. The reason we do not do this is because we like to be transparent with this charge and give our guests the option to pay this or not if they have or have not enjoyed the service they have received from the team here at the hotel. I am glad that you will come and stay with us again and we look forward to welcoming you back. My kindest regards, Dirk Crokaert General Manager

I like to stay in an upscale, cheerful, clean hotel in a good area when I travel alone and The Montague fit the bill. They have a good single room rate. The room was snug but cozy and quiet and had good amenities, including slippers, cotton balls, and a nail file! My room faced the street, but the street is not busy so there were no noise issues. The location is very convenient, less than five minutes from the Russell Square underground station, right around the corner from the British Museum, and comfortable walking distance to St. Pancras station and the British Library, Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus. I had dinner one night in the hotel restaurant and the food was very good and the service was excellent. I bought some items that needed refrigerating and the staff was very accommodating. There is a doorman and a concierge. I felt safe walking around the area at night. I highly recommend The Montague for any woman traveling alone.

Loved everything about this hotel ...especially the tastefully opulent decor . The fabric covered walls were a real feature. Bedroom although not large was thoughtfully appointed and the homemade biscuits were fantastic. ( in addition to the usual prepackaged ones on the tea tray). Bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet at night. Loved having a bath in addition to shower. The outstanding feature was the friendliness of the staff, not often encountered in London. The service was faultless. The only low point was the expensive cocktails in the bar which weren’t very good although the bar is lovely and again very good service. It was nice that we could chose whether to sit in the gorgeous traditional dining room or the conservatory terrace for breakfast. We chose the dining room as so lovely to be treated to proper table linen etc at breakfast unlike so many hotels these days even top ones. However I’m sure in better weather the terrace overlooking the garden would be a lovely choice. Fresh orange juice at breakfast was very good .

From the moment we arrived we were in awe of the spectacular service at The Montague on the Gardens. The service was exceptional from beginning to end of our 5 night stay. The staff go out of their way to ensure you are satisfied and we truly appreciated it.
The hotel is so quaint and filled with antiques and history. It is also very clean. We dined at the Blue Bistro one night as it was included in our package and our dinner was great! Each morning we had the breakfast buffet and were never disappointed. The food was awesome. The room we stayed in was very, very small but suited our needs just fine. We would stay here again and would recommend to anyone.

The location is a little far from the main sites people want to see but the subway (underground) is right up the road and SO easy to use. The location is not a deterrent to staying at this lovely hotel.

After reading the reviews, I thought this place would be a great choice to stay at. However, I was unfortunately misled by those reviews. Now, this may be due to the "praise" or "excellent" reviews that always seem to be on top and not the actual true reviews of a real stay. This seems sketchy at best.
Anyway, when I first arrived I noted that the hotel was older and perhaps historic which includes the furniture. The staff upon first meeting were able give me a booked room. I was tired from a long trip and wanted to settle into my room but was disappointed at the size of the room after checking the room out. It was a lot smaller than described. Perhaps some trick photography on their website? I also paid extra for a larger room and was disappointed when calling downstairs to figure something out and felt ripped off when nothing was done even though there were promises to fix this. Since I was to stay at this hotel long term I didn't want to rock the boat and keep phoning. The room was dark, probably due to the decor and the room wasn't as clean. To describe the room, it was like being in a tiny bedroom not a hotel room I am used to. This hotel is most definitely not a 3 or 4 star hotel as it claims, I had to phone for my room to be serviced and for the necessities that should have been provided. I was once in the shower and the housekeeping barged into the room which was alarming. There was no indication they were at the door, no knocking. This happened even with the do not disturb indication.
My entire stay was made even more difficult by the front staff not being very helpful with directions. Additionally, services that they said they provided were not provided, the gym was soo small, the staff looked miserable ( although some were friendly) and it was hit or miss if they were going to actually greet or introduce to me their breakfast offerings; other times I was ignored completely. Furthermore, the restaurant on site was almost always empty, and so on. When communicating to the general manger or manager on duty about my issues, hoping to resolve them, all I was met with were excuses and claims about how the hotel had no faults. There was no resolution.

I won't be using this hotel on my next trip. I'll give it a pass.

Dear guest, We sincerely value all feedback and want to consistently learn and improve on our service levels, however I was extremely disappointed and saddened to hear that you have decided to again post a second 1 star review about the same stay with us, this time under a second user profile. As I already explained in my response to the previous 1 star review, we did thoroughly investigate the detail of your complaint and I felt that your comments were disproportionate and not reflective of how certain events during your stay were handled. At the Montague we want all our guests to be happy and it is therefore that we have tried to make amends with you, however I am sorry that our offer did not satisfy you. Kind regards, Dirk Crokaert General Manager

I had eaten here before so knew the food is sublime. In fact, the prospect of having the prawn stroganoff again was honestly the reason for my staying here rather than trying the Renaissance at St Pancras. Dinner didn't disappoint. I now have a new favourite in the black pudding Scotch egg; what a fabulous idea. Momentarily disappointed by the lack of a bath in my room, but the comfort of the bed and the splendid bed linens more than made up for it. I know bed linens are an odd thing to rave about, but OMG...so soft, so silky. The aircon was strong enough to get the room to 19 degrees, which many older hotels just fail to do. The staff were as friendly and professional as they always have been; as a woman staying on her own, this is particularly important. So why not five stars? Well, I'm afraid the breakfast at a hotel is important to me, and knowing how fabulous the afternoon teas and dinners are, maybe I expected too much. But the cooked element of the breakfast was average at best. Steamed, wobbly toast, back bacon which had dried up to within an inch of its life, field mushrooms so huge that they might have been alien life forms, it was far from appetising. The pastries were small and pretty desiccated. Thank heavens for the bread and the cheese selection, which were fully fresh and bursting with flavour. Basically, I had Brie and cranberry juice for breakfast, which would have been ok at a basic chain hotel but was deeply disappointing here. I would still recommend a stay, but not if breakfast is your thing. Would I stay again? Yes, probably. Or maybe I'd give the Renaissance a try and just stroll down to the Montague for dinner!

Whilst I was happy that you enjoyed most of the aspects of your stay I was of course not happy to read your feedback regarding your breakfast experience with us. As you can see from many of our guests reviews the standard of our breakfast is usually very high so I apologize for us not meeting your expectations on this occasion. I have passed on your feedback to our Executive Head Chef who will be following this up further with his team. What a wonderful find this hotel was! We went here to celebrate my wife’s 60th Birthday and our 22nd Wedding Anniversary and spent one night here.
The great experience began as soon as we walked in through the entrance and were greeted with smiles and a cheery hello’s.
The check-in process was smooth and easy. One point of note is that you will be asked if you want to contribute £10 a night which goes to all the staff. At this point I declined but at the end of the stay, it was a must for us.
We left our baggage with them as we were too early to check in. When we did get back and went to the room, we found two plates with lovely cakes, one with Happy Anniversary and the other Happy Birthday on them.We also 2 small boxes with some beautiful shortbread biscuits. Jorge helped us with our options for dinner and they booked the restaurant and taxi for us. In a nice touch, Jorge had also arranged a little surprise for us when we arrived at the restaurant which was such a nice touch! In the meantime Declan made my wife a special cocktail which she absolutely loved. After dinner we came back and had some drinks in the Leopard bar which has a lovely atmosphere.
Had we stayed 2 nights, we probably would have had an evening meal here as well.. next time! The hotel was really peaceful and in a great location close to Russel Square and only 20 or so minutes away from Oxford Street( unfortunately 🤣) and Covent Garden.
The room was a decent size, rain shower in the bath and subdued lighting at nighttime in the bathroom which is a good idea.
All we can say is that the staff make this place, the service is great and all done with a smile. We will be back !! Thank you all very much!
