When we were walking towards the hostel we immediately liked the location, it's one street away from St. Pauls Cathedral and close to the water. There are a lot of cute restaurants and streets near it. The building from the hotel was beautiful, it has this older look which makes it fit the area. It is definitely a good place for backpackers, we had a 2 person room, 2 seperate beds (not a bunk bed) and a sink. Across our room was the toilet and the shower. In the morning you could get breakfast for around 6 pounds, which was a lovely breakfast with enough variety. It is also one of the cheapest hostels/hotels in that area and definitely worth your money. It is located close to a few underground stations so public transport is easily accessible. They also had a few gadgets available (that people often forget)for a small price, such as chargers, raincoats, etc. I'm very glad I found this hostel :)

Stayed 2 nights here in a shared dorm, Lots of space for your things and we had a toilet, sinks and a shower in our room which was great. Beds were comfy, if a little creaky when climbing up the ladder! I felt safe and secure during my stay (which I haven’t always experience in some “hotels” in central London. There’s bits of the decor that seem a little tired but it’s an old building and I guess heavy traffic so to be expected. You can hear the bells which I thought was lovely and didn’t actually disturb my sleep like I thought it would from reading some of the reviews, maybe just remember ear plugs if your worried about it.

It’s a really great location and for £15 a night, you honestly can’t go wrong

We deiced to head to London at short notice and were looking for accommodation. There was a single dorm listed on booking.com that could accommodate the four of us so I booked it. £179 for one night for a family of four with no breakfast might seem expensive but for a central London room this close to everything I though it was good value.

Check-in was straightforward and it was then I learned that although listed as a dorm on booking.com they are all in fact private rooms at this YHA. Great news. We had a room with 3 sets of bunk beds, so sleeps 6. Not what my wife and I would usually go for but given that we didn't get back to the hostel until gone 11pm and we were out by 9am it really didn't matter for one night.

It's a little rough around the edges, yes, but it was clean and absolutely perfect for our needs on this stay. We opted not to have breakfast there (£9.95 each for full English to £5.95 for continental) and instead went to the McDonalds just around the corner.

The bells...
Yes, it's VERY close to St Pauls cathedral and you can here the bells loud and clear. And I did. But it didn't bother me.

I've looked at going back and I cannot get a room there at all again this year! I must have been looking just at the right time as a room came available through cancellation.

Hello there! Thank you for taking your time to leave us such a good review! We are glad you've enjoyed your stay with us and we sure hope to see you again in the future! We're all sorry about the proximity situation to St.Pauls Cathedral and we're happy to hear it was not a very big deal for yourself, unfortunately with such a good location there must be one way of compromise and this is ours. Regarding booking for the year 2023 , unfortunately , at the moment, we are uncertain of how booking year 2023 is going to turn out hence why we have no availabilities for families and individuals yet. The closer we get to new years, we will have more concrete information about the status of the individual and family bookings which at the moment is uncertain! I hope this helps, and we are looking forward to having you here soon! Best regards, YHA St.Pauls Team

The hostel is definitely frayed around the edges and in desperate need of some tender loving care. Shared toilets and showers were fine, in fact the showers looked recently refurbished - although the ones we used might have been difficult for anyone plus sized (they were compact). The room smelled awful, the carpet was stained, an electrical socket was cracked and one of the pillow cases had black mould stains. A fan was supplied but did little to reduce the high temperature (yes it is summer in London and old buildings get warm). Loved the genuine hole in the floor. The building is clad in scaffolding (which we knew about) - sincerely hoping that YHA refurb the interior soon. NB the staff are absolutely brilliant - but they're let down by a dilapidated building.

Good evening Jovialis, thanks for leaving us a review. I'm sorry to hear of the issues you experienced during you stay. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly after every checkout , so it's unfortunate your room didn't smell as fresh as it could have. It's true our carpets have seen better days, however we're actively in the process of having them replaced, which will really bring some new life into the building. Thank you for informing us of the issue with the electrical socket - our maintenance team have inspected the site and will attend to the matter. I'm sorry to hear you found mould on your pillow case - our bed linen is washed off-site by a professional laundry firm, as such each piece of linen has been washed to a professional standard before arriving on-site. It is most regrettable that we failed to meet our high standards during your stay with us. Thank you for informing us of the 'hole in the floor' - we've inspected the room and have located a slight dip at one spot beneath the carpet, of which our maintenance team will attend to. The building's exterior is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment which does reduce air flow throughout the site. The work is due to be completed by November 22'. I'm pleased you found our team to be 'absolutely brilliant', and I hope you'll stay again in the future - so that we might have the opportunity to get things right with regards to other aspects of your stay. Kind regards Steve YHA London St Paul's

Just spent a couple of days at YHA St. Paul's. It really couldn't be better located for the City, and is barely two minutes' from the Cathedral itself. (Free admission at 5pm for Evensong.) No food in the evening, but plenty of local eateries nearby. Also, remarkably quiet. (And I do mean: "Remarkably"!)

The building is truly magnificent (recently refurbished on the outside), and used to house the St. Paul choristers.

The private rooms are ok, but expensive compared to, say, the Travelodge down the road, which does ensuites for less money.

The breakfast is pretty ropey, and the breakfast room itself is hot and unpleasant.

I've been a member of the YHA for a decade or so in the modern era, and this has to be the worst YHA breakfast I've ever experienced. I stayed in a Travelodge (for less money, with an ensuite) the following day, and the breakfast was much, much, better, for the same price.

I, personally, would almost always choose a YHA over a Travelodge or equivalent, but it's important to know what you're getting.

The service is as offered and the place is nice and well located/connected. The people there is helpful and very nice. The place is peaceful and quite safe. We booked a private room and it has a lavatory inside (a small desk would be nice).

The room was very clean, we stayed in a 10beds room and there was no problem. The bathroom was outside of the room and shared with another one but it was fine, always clean. The shower too, they’re separated so that was great. The common areas were comfy and clean, wifi service works good even in rooms. The only problem were the stairs, there’s no elevator so we have to carry our 23kg baggage like 20 steps. The greatness of this hostel is the location, near by foot to St Paul’s Cathedral and Millenium bridge. The rest of the areas were not so far (covent garden, trafalgar square, picadilly circus) but you have 2 metro stations nearby that connect everything, it’s perfect!!! 10!!! We would definitely return

This hostel is friendly, clean and amazingly located. It is easily reached by the excellent Thameslink rail service, with Blackfriars and City Thameslink stations both less than 5 minutes walk. The hostel is ideally situated for wandering across the river of Millenium Bridge to south Bank and for admiring the iconic St Paul's Cathedral. Despite this it is in a quiet street.

Staying here was an obvious choice opposite the grand St. Paul's cathedral as we were planning a lenghty visit to it and Tate Modern. Also with busses 11 and 26 just around the corner trips into the city are easy to make.
The staff at this YHA were all very cheerful and willing to help us on our way with loads of local knowledge.
The building is currently seeing major work done to it's façade so it was wrapped in scaffolding so no rooms with views unfortunately. This did not impact our stay very much as there are plenty of places in the direct surroundings from which to admire the views.
This was the fifth YHA hostel we stayed at in Britain and the atmosphere always strikes us as very positive, we think it's the YHA people who make the difference.

Super convenient location where you can navigate London easily, tube and bus stops near by, or close to things for walking. It is an old building so they didn’t have a lift which was rough with big luggage. The staff were so kind and helpful! Facilities were clean. I felt safe. Would for sure recommend.

Closest tube stations are St Paul’s on the central line and Blackfriars on the district/circle lines. Not sure about the towels.

No, the restaurant won't be open. Some small stores might be open but generally stores are closed during this time in England. Also, some restaurants and takeouts might be open, but generally they won't be. This youth hostel is a gloomy place to spend the Christmas break, why not look for other options? Maybe splurge a little on somewhere else and then save money when you get back.
