Travellers' Choice
Compston House is a traditional 1890's merchant house built of Lakeland stone. Throughout the years, it has been lovingly cared for and provided many guests with memorable visits of Ambleside. The property is ideally situated in the heart of Ambleside, close to all shops, bars and restaurants. Owners Megan and John (and their dog Mia) provide high quality hospitality, a comfortable stay and fantastic breakfasts making your stay all the more enjoyable! Compston House has undergone a major refurbishment and has now had seven of its nine rooms renovated to a very high standard, leaving only two to follow. All of our new rooms have been very well received from our previous guests and we look forward to completing the house in the coming years. We offer a selection of board games and books in our guest lounge for your enjoyment during your stay, in addition to complimentary access to White Platts Recreation Ground found directly opposite the house. They boast a variety of activities such as pitch and putt, mini golf and 3 tennis courts for you to enjoy (seasonal restrictions apply). Our amazing German Shepherd Mia has stolen the hearts of many! She loves meeting our valued guests, and they love meeting her! She is extremely well behaved and very friendly! She knows her place in the house and never enters the dining area and only stays at Reception. We look forward to welcoming you to this amazing part of the country and providing you with the great service, excellent hospitality and fantastic breakfast you deserve! We hope to you see you soon!

My husband and I stayed for one night when we were visiting the Old Stamp House restaurant. Our room was small but perfectly formed and couldn't have been better for what we needed! John and Meg were super friendly and we had some great chats with them, and we had to literally tear ourselves away from their beautiful dog!! The breakfast was delicious, lots of options for gluten free (me) and a massive brekkie with all the meat (and pancakes!!) for the husband. Would definitely return! Thank you. You made us want to move back to the Lakes even more!!

We were only in Ambleside for an overnight stay and we chose the best place to stay. Choosing the ‘Natural Hessian King Suite’ (Room 8) was perfect for us. The room was spotless, with space to move about but still cosy. Tea and coffee making (Tassimo pods) facilities are supplied. Having a sofa to sit on instead of lying on the bed, when reading or watching TV, certainly helps! The bathroom (shower, toilet and basin) was very clean with complementary toiletries all present and correct. Megan and John are perfect hosts, taking our luggage to our room, which was still being deep-cleaned, while we took a trip round a very rainy Ambleside. Although we ate out well in the evening, we were ready for breakfast. My wife had the Full English and I opted for bacon, toast and mushrooms, all cooked to order with juice and tea or coffee to complete. I would highly recommend Compston House for either a short or longer-term stay and thanks to Megan and John for a welcoming experience.

Room Tip: The suites seem to be the best for couples. Ours had a proper window and a Velux light.

Beautiful B and B in central Ambleside, the owners were really friendly and welcoming and the property was beautifully maintained and decorated. We had a really comfortable room on the top floor, small but everything we needed when using as a base for looking round the area etc. Free parking pass for the car park round the corner and easy to walk around the area. The breakfast choices were really good and everything was freshly cooked to order with much more choice than a lot of places. Would definitely recommend and stay here if visiting again.

I was only in Ambleside overnight but was made to feel extremely welcome by my hosts Megan & John. Compston House was excellent, clean, well appointed and guarded extremely well by the resident German Shepherd Mia. The room was spotless and the immaculate shower was well appreciated first thing in the morning. It is only a short walk from the town centre and all the local facilities, bars and restaurants. I would highly recommend Compston House and would like to return with my wife in the future.
