We chose this hotel as we were attending a sports event in Watford and were disappointed with our previous stay at the Hilton Hotel in Watford so wanted to stay somewhere else.

Our initial impression of the hotel was very good. The receptionist was very polite and efficient when checking us in. She explained that the Hilton Group had recently taken over the hotel and assured us that we would like the hotel.

Parking is very limited at the hotel but on our return from our evening out there was a place available on site. There are other alternatives offered by the hotel and this is explained on arrival and a map with directions is offered.

The room and its facilities were very comfortable although more toiletries could be put in the room as we had to share a half used small shampoo between us. Perhaps an oversight from housekeeping who should have double checked when cleaning the room?

Breakfast was very well organised. We were asked when checking in what time we would like breakfast. This was to ensure only certain numbers were there at any one time.

There was a good selection of hot and cold food and beverages available. The food area was constantly being checked and cleaned the whole time we were there.

There were only a couple of minor niggles. The scrambled eggs were so solid neither of us opted to have them and there were no fried eggs. Another thing was the waitress took away our cereal bowls when we had finished but left our dirty cooked breakfast plates that were also there, then took away a knife I was using to butter toast. I took it back, explaining that I was using it and she took it from me again saying that she would get another one! On her return she offered me a clean knife but still left the dirty plates in front of us.

As I said, just small niggles which didnt affect our stay and if we were ever in the area again we would definitely look at book to stay at the hotel again

This is a great hotel for the money with local character. It is situated on the edge of the centre so can walk to pretty much everything, it's quiet and it has free parking.

Rooms are well designed and very clean with all the things I look for in a hotel: comfy bed, armchair, tea and coffee making facilities, decent hairdryer, plenty of shelf/ counter space, especially in the bathroom, lighted mirror, good shower and WiFi. At this price point is definitely better value and comfort than some of the more well known chains.

The hotel also offers breakfast for an additional reasonable cost and there is a bar open 24/7.

Check in was welcoming, friendly and swift.

There is also a rather nice art deco style Cafe Rouge attached to the hotel, although if you're happy to pay a little more for a meal I recommend Lussmans just a couple mins walk away.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for one night as we were visiting Harry Potter Studios and it was perfect.
We paid £44 for a double room which is absolutely fantastic. I was not expecting such a beautiful hotel, friendly and welcoming staff and modern clean room.
The bed was super comfy and we had a perfect nights sleep.
They were offering free continental breakfast due to covid which even though we missed out on due to being back late, I thought was such a nice touch.
There were sanitizing spots all over the hotel and we had our temperature checked on arrival which was very reassuring.
Parking was very stress free too and plenty of spots.
Would definitely recommend to anybody staying in the area. Couldn't fault it! So refreshing to stay somewhere fab at such a low price, thank you :)

This Hotel is excellent, great location, good price and really modern.

The hotel is upgrading the rooms, which a lot of bigger chains neglect to keep on top of.

It’s also one of only a few hotels I’ve seen that has a bin to put takeaway containers so you don’t need to keep them in your room

This establishment is currently being updated and refurbished. Our room on the third floor was virtually brand new with all the facilities you would expect of a 4 or 5 star hotel. Huge TV screen, hair dryer, iron, tea making etc. all helped to make our 2 night stay enjoyable. There is a temporary breakfast room which we didn't sample during the renovations. There is free car parking allocated to various places within the vicinity of the hotel whilst the work is being carried out. There is no doubt that when the work is finished, this will be a very popular hotel, which is opposite the Cathedral and within walking distance of the town and shops.

We had a two night stay and it was a pleasure to see all areas were working normally including housekeeping, a rarity these days. On reception we were politely and helpfully received which made the start to our stay a pleasant experience. The hotel gives the appearance of being small, indeed the staff made up for the appearance, especially the breakfast room staff who went that little bit extra to ensure we had a pleasant experience. Breakfast was self service buffet and al-a-carte order from an adequate menu. Rooms were clean, well presented and comfortable. Overall a very comfortable stay.
The criticisms was a badly stocked bar, no Baileys, no Amaretto or Disaronno, two pumps out of action. An inconvenient car park location, whilst I accept the restriction of town center space, a little more reality regarding the distance from the hotel, a four minute walk if you are young and heathy in excellent weather conditions, but to be told it was a four minute walk in the snow and icy roads for an elderly person was not realistic. Overall a very nice hotel with an enjoyable stay thanks to the staff.

Terribly disappointing experience. I had high expectations for this hotel experience, but it managed to far, far fall below every single one of them. From the 10 minute walk to park a few blocks away to the horrendous disaster they call “breakfast,” the Samual Ryder is completely underwhelming in every way possible.

The rooms are nicely appointed, but that doesn’t make up for the clanking of people in the hotel hallway or from rooms above. We were put into a bottom room open to a small car lot (not the hotels I might add) where passers by could see into our room and scout out our belongings. Around midnight you get the pleasure of being woken up by folks leaving nearby pubs, oh the joy of terrible, interrupted sleep.

The breakfast is sparse and unappetizing. While I was looking forward to a warm breakfast, that’s only available for an additional supplement, even to Gold status members, despite the person at check-in saying you have it complimentary. The options are very limited to high carbohydrate fare. There is no protein, so folks like me with paleo/reduced carbohydrates diets for health reasons will basically be unable to eat the breakfast without paying more.

This hotel is basically a 1-star hotel at a 5-star price. I’ve stayed at Ibis Budget hotels that are far more accommodating, have better rooms, and a breakfast that’s edible. If you want to pay a lot more and receive far less for the price, this hotel is for you. I certainly will never stay here again, and from what the manager at the front desk said, I may need to scratch all Tapastry Collection Hilton Hotels off the list for future travel.

Dear Sir I would like to apologise for the way you felt during your stay. I have taken all of your constructive feedback on board and will do my best to incorporate in the best possible way. As we provide A la cart breakfast, we do have a small supplement charge from the continental included breakfast for our loyal Gold and Diamonds Hilton Honours Guests. This is a charge of £5 which we believe is incredible value versus the full cost of our breakfast of £16.95. Again, apologise one more time if you did not think that this value was good enough. I can confirm that we fully adhere to all Hilton Honours Benefits and specifically on the Breakfast, we do provide complimentary continental one for every single Gold and Diamond Guest. Thank you again for your feedback. Have a lovely day. Petar General Manager

The greeting and help from staff upon arrival was great. They were very friendly and attentive.

Parking was off site but not too far away, plus you could unload your luggage so not too far to trudge!

The hotel is being refurbished so we didn’t try out any of the on-site facilities (which was fine as we were informed of this in advance).

We stayed in a newly refurbished room which, at a glance, looked great with a contemporary design. However having stayed in the room for 2 nights, I suggest the hotel has gone massively budget on the works carried out. The window handles are covered in paint and plaster, there was lots of condensation and the windows didn’t shut properly so in the morning it sounded like people talking outside the hotel were stood in the room with us! The room is not soundproofed from the corridor either. The finishes around the edges of the doors and walls/ floor were poor; uneven plastering and bits chipping already. A real shame as the rooms will get tatty very quickly.

However it was good value for what we paid and in a perfect location to walk into town.

Such a lovely hotel!
The decor in the rooms and the hotel in general was amazing! Modern but comfy in a beautiful old building.
Location is perfect, definitely ask for parking info before you arrive if you haven't read previous reviews that mention it.
We both had an amazing sleep and the shower was just bliss.
Only criticism was at breakfast the staff member wasn't very attentive, it took a while to explain about the continental breakfast and just made it feel awkward or pike were qere interrupting him. Also on check in they take a temporary £50 deposit from a card in case you spend anything additional at the bar or breakfast, but this wasn't fully explained to us, we got it straight back on departure but just felt awkward as it wasn't made clear or if we could opt out of this.
Definitely would stay again, those were the only 2 niggles we had, which definitely would not be enough to stop us coming again, or recommending it to anyone.

We stayed here last week and were very pleased. Parking is difficult in St Albans but the hotel has some spaces and we were directed to them with only a very short walk back to the hotel.
Room was certainly big enough for two with a comfy bed and decent bathroom. Tea and coffee making facilities were on offer.
Breakfast was poor but I cannot blame the hotel for that as there are not too many options at the moment - they are forced to offer a breakfast bag with packaged food.
The hotel's location is excellent being smack bang in the centre of St Albans.

Parking appears to be well away from the hotel, based on what we saw. Room 314 was away from the lifts and was quiet the first night but one neighbour was doing work in their garden on the weekend which made it quite loud.
