Very unimpressed all round with grotty carpets and grubby and stained upholstery in abundance everywhere, including our room. Paid for Privilege Room for five nights with breakfast, bedroom window was so rotten the bottom of the frame had dropped away from the glass and had clearly been like that for months and dare not touch it being certain it would have collapsed into yard below, stuffed the gap with towels to stop draft and keep noise of kitchen fans out. Extremely limited menu but chef was helpful getting extras in. Luckily, Got a parking place on the Monday we arrived, but we had soon had enough of the place, and when we left two days early we believe a ship’s crew had arrived pre cruise and the car park was full and we had a job getting out. The staff were all very helpful but we not only came home early but immediately cancelled our five night booking for The Dolphin in September because we would never stay there again.

A lot of unhappy guests were complaining in reception when my daughter and I arrived. The poor receptionist clearly had no backup and no power to help anyone, and my heart went out to her. She was very lovely and polite, and was doing the best she could under difficult circumstances. The hotel is very dated, and while of course I don’t blame the hotel for the heatwave, a window which only opens 3” + a single, rather weak fan = a stiflingly hot, unpleasant night. The water doesn’t run through cold in the cold tap, and there is no fridge in the room, so we had no access to cold water overnight. We slept under wet towels as this was the only way to get any relief from the temperature. Also we booked a twin room, but were given a room with a double bed and an unmade sofa bed with no sign of sheets anywhere - as it was just me and my daughter we shared the double but she wouldn’t be happy with that if she were a bit older. The gentleman serving the breakfast was again really lovely and helpful - sadly there were no jugs for water available as they were all being used by events, but he filled our water bottles for us and very kindly gave us a generous amount of ice in them which was gratefully received. Pros - great staff. They all seemed very stressed which is understandable, as in a hotel that size to only see two members of staff the whole time was unexpected. I hope you pay your staff well because they work damn hard for their money. Bed was comfortable, bedding was clean but with old stains present. Cons - very dated, needs to address the temperatures in the bedrooms in the summer, or at a minimum provide a fridge with cold tap water in each room as the only water coming out of the taps was warm. No water jugs for guests to use at breakfast honestly felt like a slap in the face by that point, only a small 2L jug for all the guests to share was wholly inadequate. Also need to update their complaints procedure - a manager should have come and spoken to the unhappy customers rather than leaving it all for the poor receptionist to sort out. We won’t be staying again.

Stayed here 19th July. The room was on the 4th floor, no air in the room at all to be able to breathe, absolute no no for an asthmatic, literally could not breathe. Window opened about 10cm, no breeze as backed up onto a building. No air con, no ceiling fan, was provided a desk fan, couldn't even plug it in my the bed as there s only 1 plug socket at the far end of the room by the TV. Staff advised no other rooms available and nothing else they could do. Should be entitledto a refund. I spent the late hours of the evening sitting outside the hotel just to get some oxygen. Spent about a total of 2 hours in the room and left. I would never ever stay here again.

The Dolphin Hotel is steeped in thespian and scholarly writing. William Shakespeare performed his work within the courtyard. Jane Austin celebrated her 18th Birthday with a Grand Ball. Today celebrations and memories continue expertly choreographed by the wonderful caring and responsive in house team. Lauren the Head Judge even our Len would be proud of her style performing the very elegant waltz. Samantha on reception does a very deft and elegant salsa, Lucinda a very resourceful quickstep checking in guests, and there is Caitlin with her foxtrot with such efficient panache. Colin a man of all trades with such a welcoming persona performs a stunning jive whilst Laszlo our chef reenacts the moonwalk in his kitchen. All having a ball as did I.

Very poor state of repair, clearly not 4 star as advertised, food also to a poor standard. Hole in the floor, fire alarms in fault and continually sounding, receptionist and manager both failed to address matters satisfactorily. Manager continually fails to respond.
