The Star, housed in a mixture of new and old buildings, has been totally rebuilt, with new roofs, new wooden windows, many trees planted and its 30 bedrooms and bathrooms all remodelled and newly decorated. The dining room is decorated with a striking black and white Elizabethan design on the floor. The library is a sanctuary for guests to enjoy a drink or a cup of tea, or play one of the board games. Its bookshelves are packed with poetry, short stories and novels by British authors, and there is a section dedicated to local history, flora and fauna. The library has a secret door that opens onto the restaurant.

The Star hotel garners high praise for its spotless cleanliness and stylish rooms that offer both comfort and a keen eye for detail. Nestled in the charming village of Alfriston, guests are delighted by the scenic surroundings and the welcoming atmosphere created by the friendly and professional staff. While most guests commend the attentive service, some have encountered inconsistencies. The hotel's amenities add to the allure, though opinions on value vary, with some perceiving exceptional worth and others considering it overpriced.

We stayed here Christmas last year had such a great time we booked again for a weekend in September and also this xmas . Hotel is still wonderful ,spotlessly clean and nothing is too much trouble for the sweet staff, however we missed the fact that the owner was away and she has her eagle eye on things ,the Carol service was a shambles this time with no real service for the free champagne, plus I was charged ÂŁ20 for two glasses of mulled wine ten minutes before it was a free glass each , I complained but to no avail which I thought was odd being the season of goodwill etc ,.Every purchase at the bar includes 20 per cent service so most people including us spend a small fortune over 3 days so was a bit miffed to be rebuffed . The Panettone was just left instead of someone serving it , was very sad as still there two days later .All our meals were fab except for Xmas dinner which last year was several small courses ,this time more traditional but definitely the kitchen was under strain as our meals were not presented nicely which is a big part of enjoyment ,too much on tbe plate and not arranged well - no free glass of champagne as quoted in the package ..sorry about the minor quibbles but someone needs to have feedback surely.we had a great time in all but need to let people know if it's not 100 per cent .

The renovation of the existing inn and hotel buildings is too notch. The room we stayed in was -while small- perfectly considered with everything one would need, designed in an elegant, simple and cosy manner with robust snd attractive fittings. Everything was incredibly clean. The location of the Star in Alfriston is so delightful, you step outside and you are in the middle of this picturesque village with multiple walking routes available. Everything is dog friendly. The staff are all happy, friendly, and efficient. In fact we were both quite stunned at the level of speed and efficiency shown by all ataff members in every area and aspect of the hotel. I don't believe we have ever stayed somewhere so well-run that was also so relaxed and friendly. Highly recommended. The only point I would make is that the dog friendly rooms should have something that allows for the french doors to be opened to allow fresh air in on hot nights, while stopping dogs escaping. We had to borrow the porter's trolley for this purpose during our stay, but staff were very helpful & understanding with this as well.

Spent a night here catching up with friends. The Star Hotel is an old property having been beautifully restored to what is now an amazing boutique hotel in the picturesque village of Alfriston in East Sussex.

We stayed in a Star Junior Suite which was absolutely perfect, the dinner and breakfast were sublime, all fresh local produce used wherever possible, a fairly decent wine list and the breakfast one of the best we have eaten in a long time.

All the staff were professional yet extremely friendly and the whole atmosphere of the hotel gave you an air of calm and peace.

Wifi signal quite good, and their courtyard garden was the perfect place to enjoy some lunchtime cocktails given the rain holding off for long enough.

All in all my wife and I were VERY impressed with our stay and would 100% recommend The Star in Alfriston for a relaxing and extremely comfortable break.

Couple of suggestions for the management;
given the quality of the hotel we would have expected shower caps in the bathroom for the ladies, make up removal pads and some soap in addition to the pump action hand wash/shampoo/conditioner dispensers. Little things but important nonetheless.

The Star's website promised a 'Festive Lunch'. We ate at the restaurant the Sunday before Christmas and sadly it was anything but festive. The menu was definitely not festive. The food tasted OK but nothing special. The meal fell short of the high standards we would expect from the Star. I ordered a glass of champagne which was served completely flat. Our waiter quickly exchanged it when we mentioned the fact that it was flat but we wondered why it was even served in the first place when clearly the bottle had been opened for a very long time. The soup was served without soup spoons. Again, quickly rectified once we brought it to a waitresses attention. The wait between finishing our starters and receiving our main course was over half an hour.
All in all the experience was disappointing.

We spent one night at The Star for dinner, bed and breakfast to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. The hotel is larger than I imagined. Its very nice indeed, fitted with an eclectic and unusual range of furniture and objects, while still retaining its old world charm. Our bedroom was lovely, large and comfortable with a big shower room and space to hang clothes. The whole hotel is a delight, very clean and welcoming. However, the dinner wasn't quite up to the high standards of the rest of the hotel. The presentation of the food wasn't particularly good. I chose a simple beetroot and goat's cheese starter, something I've had many times before. In this case the starter consisted of three of four slices of beetroot, four smallish wedges of cheese and this was covered by a mass of rocket, several large, very cold, slices of tomato and was absolutely drowned in dressing. I left the rocket and tomato. My next course, was an array of grilled fish. The fish was good quality, but had absolutely no seasoning or flavour. The fennel and watercress salad on the side was cold and tasteless. The whole thing needed a sharp dressing and proper seasoning to lift it. My husband's said his pate followed by lamb cutlets was ok, but certainly not exceptional. At breakfast which was good, I had mushrooms on toast that had more flavour than any of the food at dinner. Possibly because its a fairly quiet time of year, the dinner wasn't quite up to The Star's usual standard, I hope this is the case. Luckily we were on a deal. If we had to pay the hefty full price for the food, I think we would have been very disappointed. All in all we enjoyed our stay, The hotel is lovely in a great village.

We booked a one night stay in the Heritage Room at a cost of ÂŁ450 which included breakfast. We had excellent and helpful correspondence with the receptionist Jacob and were very much looking forward to our stay.

On arrival we were told our room wasn’t ready and we’re asked to wait in the lounge area. Walking through to this area we were met with a group of staff chatting and laughing playing a game which involved one of them hanging from the bannister. When they saw us they were taken by surprise and the expletives used were not exactly the welcome we expected.

The lounge was busy so we went into the courtyard for coffee and then as no one has come to tell us our room was ready we returned to reception. The room was still not ready and we were asked to take a seat in the lounge or have coffee in the courtyard.

My wife went over to the hairdresser as there was such a delay in getting the room and on her return asked for directions to the Heritage suite. She was told it was upstairs. There are no names on the rooms so she came back downstairs ( no mean feat with a broken toe and crutches) to ask which room upstairs it was. Unbelievably she was told just to try each room and see where her husband was. Personally I’ve never heard such a bizarre suggestion.

We were only staying one night and were only given our room just after half past four. We felt that was really poor as the room cost ÂŁ450 and we had to vacate the room by 11am. We had returned on an overnight flight from Mauritius and access to the room had been expected at 3pm so we would have had time to rest for an hour and then shower and come down for dinner.

The room itself was dark but beautifully furnished. The bathroom was luxurious. It looked over the main road and was noisy with traffic, however as we were staying for one night this wasn’t an issue for us. We phoned down for some milk for the coffee and tea tray which took forever to come and I mean forever. We had to call twice more and then I went to get it myself.

We ate in the restaurant that evening and the Maitre D’ Francesco was very good and returning the dishes for us to the kitchen and was most apologetic for the mistakes made in our evening meal.

My wife left a letter for the hotel Manager in the room before we left and had hope for some kind of correspondence and perhaps an apology for what was an expensive and most unsatisfactory stay. None was forthcoming.

Alfriston is a pretty little village and we did so look forward to coming here, however having not heard back from the hotel, it’s unlikely we will choose to stay here again.

Everything about our one night stay made me happy. We had a ground floor room in the newer wing with a small, sunny terrace. I loved the decor and the way the limited space is optimised, with a little sofa included. Similarly although the bathroom is small it has a large walk-in rain shower. There were lovely Bramley toiletries but no slippers or robes. (I'd have loved a pair of slippers with the Star logo ...). Hidden in the wardrobe was a safe, hairdryer, and kettle with the prettiest cups and saucers. Tea is provided, fresh milk and coffee on request. Carafes of water by the bedside were replenished with the turndown service. The bed was extremely comfortable with luxurious bedlinen. Hotel bedrooms are often too hot for me and this was a warm night so I came armed with my trusty Dyson fan but the room was surprisingly cool and I had no need for it.
Difficult to decide whether to dine in the pretty, candlelit courtyard or the beautiful, timber beamed restaurant with its stunning stencilled floor. We chose the latter and enjoyed an excellent if expensive meal. The menu is limited, and I was a little disappointed that the fish options were sea bass or sea trout - both things that I cook at home (albeit these were wild, not farmed), so I chose instead the South Downs lamb leg with fennel, spinach and a herb vinaigrette. It was delicious and a very generous portion. The wine list covers a range of prices and there are many available by the glass, giving us the chance to sample some lovely Italian wines that we were unfamiliar with.
Having followed the TV series about the refurbishment of The Star and witnessed the blood, sweat and tears that Alex put in to it, it was good to see her looking relaxed and chatting to guests at their tables, both then and again at breakfast the next morning. Breakfast was a lovely, relaxed affair. Berries with local yogurt and fresh figs and nuts followed by a selection of hot dishes and great coffee.
All the staff without exception we found to be friendly and helpful, both in the restaurant and at reception.
What makes The Star special for me is the way a sense of history has been retained and the mix of warmth and homeliness with style and an eclectic taste in furnishings and art. I loved the sculpture in the library of the woman with bird's nest hair!
There is information in your room regarding nearby walks. Cuckmere Haven is only a short drive away and we enjoyed visits to the nearby Rathfinney Wine Estate and to Charleston Farmhouse.
We had such a brilliant time!

We stayed here for one night, which was a gift from our daughters. The whole experience was a delight. Every member of staff we interacted with was pleasant, friendly and helpful, the hotel itself was very attractively decorated and the room was perfect in every respect. We intend to return, even if only to enjoy the food, which we both thought was cooked, presented and served perfectly. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay.

I know I'm just adding to the many five star reviews, but having spent a lovely night at the Star, I feel I want to tell people about it. First of all, reservations were incredibly helpful: we had to cancel our booking for December as I was in hospital with flu, but as we had been given a voucher that was already past its expiry date, I didn't know if they would be happy to honour it. They were. Our room (juliet balcony in the 60s block) was beautifully done, the furnishings felt solid and were well looked after. The bed was so comfortable I asked where the mattress was from (we need a new mattress), and Alex (who was at breakfast the next morning) told me. The bed linen felt lovely, the shower was a decent pressure. It felt like a real treat to come back from dinner and for the bathroom to have been cleaned, and everything tidied. Every member of staff we came across was helpful and friendly, and seemed to enjoy working there. The open fires in winter (it was very cold that weekend!) were a delight, but our room was also very warm. I loved everything from the guides for several local walks (in a convenient wallet) in each room, to the design of things like the water carafes (which I now want at home!) It was a joy to have piles of books in all the rooms, and the library was great for afternoon tea and to sit in after dinner. I loved the magnifying mirror in the bathroom (brilliant touch). The food was good but not great - we enjoyed the meal (salmon and avocado, followed by pork tenderloin in my case, steak in my husband's) but would agree with some comments that the starter was very chilled. Breakfast was also fine. I would return in a heartbeat, the village is charming (I wondered whether the Polizzi design touch has spread) and the walks in the area are stunning. It's hard to fault for a weekend away, and I'm sure that has something to do with the fact that the owners are very present.

This was my 3rd visit to The Star for lunch and the most disappointing of all 3. The first was shortly after it had opened so you expected teething issues. The second was in between Christmas and New year and Alex was there on that occasion and the whole place ran like clockwork, superb service, superb food and great ambience. Today Saturday 23rd March the service was akin to a poor seafront cafe that employs the local school kids for a Saturday job. On arrival the place was empty bar a couple of tables, we went to the desk and was told 'oh just take any table for two'. We went to sit in the larger bar area but could immediately smell and feel the smokey fire irritating our eyes and throats. We asked if there was any else, 'oh you can sit in the small bar area of you want' again not shown or taken, just left to our own devices. Once sat there was another couple in the bar who had to go up to order their meals at the bar because the staff were too busy chatting. The bar man insisted on calling everyone 'guys'like a bad American movie. We ordered drinks then sat and waited, and waited and waited eventually we got up and had to ask for someone to take our order. The food came and as previously it was excellent no complaints there at all. We finished our starter and the girl took our plates away and said 'do you want to see the dessert menu' so I had to tell her we're having mains when she could clearly see the mains cutlery on the table- 'oh ok' was the reply. The mains turned up and we then had to ask for salt and pepper, I noted this happened to 2 other tables also. I saw another girl wipe her nose In front of customers with her hand. Plates of food came out but empties were ignored by those staff and left empty handed making the place look untidy. Eventually one girl cleared our table of mains didn't ask if we wanted anything else and left us to it nobody else came up when we wanted a coffee we could have easily walked out without paying as the staff were too busy chatting to each other. Eventually we decided against coffee and had to go find someone to ask for the bill. That arrived with the 12.5% service charge added and I advised the waitress we wouldn't be paying that, no questions asked as to why just 'oh ok' again. Paid eventually and went to the manager and explained and she was not interested at all , her only comment was I'll have a word with the team and offered us a coffee in the lounge no real apology or sincerity. I shall think twice about coming back again because clearly the place only works when Alex is there, any other time you will get school girl Saturday cafe service which is such a shame as it had been exquisite and more than 5 stars before.

There is no doubt that the many complaints reflect a problem. If I were you, and given you have committed to stay there, I would give them a call in advance and explain your concerns, not rely on the owner reading this. Tell them you'd like a decorated room and insist on seeing it before. I usually find that those who take extra steps to get what they want get it and those who rely on good faith don't sadly. If you are walking the SDW get over to The Seven Sisters it's an amazing days walking
