We have just returned from a 5 night stay and found the Berrurry to be very clean and well run by Katrina and her daughter Courtney.
We were welcomed on arrival and shown to our room, Katrina explained the COVID requirements which now apply in detail which put our minds at rest.
The room was of a good size and the bed was comfortable.
The breakfast was one of the best we have ever had with a great selection and top quality fresh produce. It was extremely well cooked bu Katrina and served by Courtney who always had a smile even when under pressure.
Although we enjoyed our stay and I do not want to stop other guests form staying there, I can not give 5 stars as the overall condition of the premises is starting to show signs of needing some updating of decoration, carpets, shower (in our room (6) the pressure was so low that my wife could not rinse the shampoo off properly) also we found the bath/shower difficult to step out of as there was no non slip to the bath and the shower screen did not leave much room.
Perhaps the owner should think about some investment in the property in the near future, because in our opinion if was not for the efforts of the staff this guest house would quickly slip down the ratings.

We stayed here for 2 nights in July 2022. I’m always a little dubious about B and B stays but read the reviews beforehand and decided to book instead of a hotel. This place is so lovely and the hosts are just as lovely. From the moment you walk up the path, it’s clear that the owners have high standards and don’t cut corners. There is a really cute bar available for guests along with a lovely seated area both inside and outdoors. The room itself was spacious and a very good size bathroom for a B and B. I’ve stayed in lots of B and B’s in Torquay and this one is a very peaceful place - no noises from downstairs, the street outside or people in the rooms next to us. It definitely has a very relaxing feel to it. Now for the breakfast 👌. This is not a cereal from a plastic container or greasy fry up type of place. I had eggs Royale which were amazing along with the home made yogurts. You get a menu to choose from. I have never seen eggs with such a vibrant orange yolk in all the places that I have stayed. The ingredients used in all the food is clearly locally sourced and of excellent quality. The service was first class. The hosts are very attentive and nothing is too much trouble. This place is run well and the hosts pay great attention to detail. I’m not one for leaving reviews but was impressed by this stay and felt I needed to let others know how lovely this place is.

The accommodation was spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed; the large fluffy towels were very much appreciated. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room are complemented by fresh milk and chilled water which are available whenever required.

The Berburry is licenced and we made very good use of the "honesty bar" and peaceful outside seating area.

Breakfast was very good indeed with good quality, locally sourced produce. Hot food was ordered the night before and arrived at our table piping hot. I am coeliac and the hosts went out if their way to source and provide gf options. I cannot rate this guest house highly enough and have no hesitation in recommending to friends and family.

For a 5 Star B&B our impressions of the Berburry were not great.

I should perhaps say that I used to run a Five Start B&B in Hove so I know what one should be like.

Our first impression of room 2 was the odd smell, which we equated to a Retirement Home. One bedside light did not work. The bed was very hard & uncomfortable with a mattress topper that has zero luft. The bed valance had not been changed in months as it was covered in dust & stains. The painted furniture was a variety of whites with drawer fronts clearly being repainted but not the rest & the drawers were chipped.

The Bathroom had been partially updated & the shower was powerful & gave hot water very quickly. The toilet had a mismatching coloured seat & lid. The towels were superb with good sized bath sheets.

The breakfast was very good, though I was amused by the ‘Welsh Dresser’ that with its empty display shelves. It was in fact stocked with a single large bottle of Lea & Perrins sauce, two square empty baskets for napkins, a vase & an arrangement of individual servings of jam.

My husband & I have just recently stayed in France in three separate Four Star B&B equivalents & all three were superior having the attention to detail & value for money that the Berburry sadly lacks.

I have given the hotel two stars as the place did nothing to be worth £150 & the Five Star rating. They need to stop resting on their laurels if they to retain their rating.

Stayed here for 4 nights and to be honest we would have moved to another place if we could have found one (as it was holiday season there was absolutely nothing else available in Torquay)
The gardens were nothing like the photos as it looked very unkept. The entrance looked very tired.
We started off in room 7 and the first thing my wife said when she seen the carpet was that she was glad she brought her slippers. In the morning the shower pressure was extremely low and when we mentioned it to the manager ( Katrina) she said we could have room 3 instead saying that it was next to the kitchen but not to worry about it because it would be ok as it wasn’t too noisy in the morning. Needless to say because of a very badly fitted bedroom door we didn’t have to set our alarm as we were woken with conversations and noises for the next 3 mornings at circa 7.30am.

As other reviewers said Katrina was very pleasant and I guess as helpful as she could be.
There no way this place is 5 stars

A classic English B&B with a significant difference – Wendy & Steve. Nothing is too much trouble and they make you feel so welcome. The range of breakfast options is beyond anything I’ve experience at a B&B. If you want something light I’d recommend the smashed avocado on toast (served either with or without a perfect poached egg). The traditional full English kept me going until the evening and it was served on a hot plate so it remained warm right through to the very last bite.

For those of an athletic disposition, there's a huge green space right opposite with a running track to burn off the calories.

My room was spotless and although the weather was warm I didn’t need to use the fan provided to keep cool.

This B&B’s distinguishing feature has to be its licenced honesty bar. If it’s sunny you can sit outside with a drink in the lovely west facing garden and chat with fellow guests or if it’s cooler you can sit in the contemporary bar area. There is plenty of seating and even a chess board!

Located just 10 minutes from the beach and train station and with ample parking, The Berburry makes a perfect base to explore Torquay, Devon and beyond. I can’t wait to return.

From your greeting at the door upon check in and then throughout your whole stay Wendy and Steve's attention to detail is amazing .They have got this so right ..
We stayed in room 3 and after being offered home made carrot cake and bottles of water after our journey we was shown to our room which had everything you could possibly want for a lovely stay , The most comfortable bed , a boiling hot shower , mirrors with a socket nearby , shelves in the bathroom for your toiletries, a fan or the door opening to a little seated area outside . They have really thought everything through . Wendy was on hand to give us directions and shortcuts to the town and seafront which is only a short 10 minute walk away 🙂
The breakfast choice 🤤 which is included in your stay is like no other .. From the homemade yogurt and fresh fruit and cereals to the full English ,salmon and scrambled eggs , eggs Benedict pancakes and many more choices they are all served with a cheering smile from the hosts
There is nothing bad I can say about The Berberry so much so we are already planning to go back

Wendy and Steve are superb hosts, warm and welcoming.
We stayed in a junior suite which was spotlessly clean, flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk available. The room has a super king size bed, seating including a sofa and even an overhead fan which was very welcome !
Breakfast was lovely and my husband had a lovely homemade pancake which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Wendy and Steve go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. I will certainly recommend The Berburry, a lovely stay.

The other hotel we had stayed in previously was full & this seemed like a good standard of accommodation & the price was good. We are so pleased it was full because this was such a fantastic place. We were greeted warmly & checked in by Wendy who gave us all the info & took us to room no 9 which I loved immediately, the colours etc were perfect. It was an extremely comfortable room even having an iron, a ceiling fan & a desktop fan. The bathroom was modern bright & airy, the shower was a good size with plenty of hot water & quality soaps, shampoo etc. We made use of the bar & sat & chatted to both Wendy & Steve for a while which was lovely of them. We had a nice undisturbed sleep & the beds were very comfy. Breakfast next morning was fab, they catered really well for my husband’s Dairy intolerance without a problem. We only stayed the 1 night but hope to make it more on the next visit
