Travellers' Choice
Fourways, north of Johannesburg and only 20 minutes from Sandton, is home to the famous Montecasino Entertainment Complex offering a variety of entertainment options including theatres, movies, shopping, restaurants, ten-pin bowling and a world class casino. Integral to this entertainment mecca is the contemporary SunSquare hotel. Each of the 179 rooms sports a funky design and all the modern conveniences that today’s travellers could possibly need. An Italian-style piazza and restaurant adds that extra something special to the hotel which is the only place to stay for those wanting to be at the centre of all the action.

On the whole this was OK but with a couple of significant drawbacks. I arrived after an overnight flight from London which had been delayed for two hours. The company I was visiting had booked the previous night so I would be able to check in early. I had a day of meetings ahead and needed to change and shower. However, as I hadn't shown up the night before they had given the room away and on arrival I was told there were no rooms available. The holdover was clearly marked on the reservation but they "hadn't noticed". After about ten mintues of insiting I needed the room I had booked the unapologetic staff found one. It was a smoking room but at this point I was beyond caring. I have to say though that it didn't smell of smoke so not a big deal. The other adavntage was that

i booked this hotel after briefly checking it out on a previous trip, and despite the earlier reviews. Early check-in after an overnight flight was friendly and efficient and got "upgraded" to a room facing the square. The room was fresh and comfortable, and I found the "musical fountain" in front to be entertaining and unobtrusive. After the "finale" ending at 22:45, there was no problem with noise. The room had a comfortable work space and wireless internet (charged). The adjoining Montecasino complex is a real treat with a good selection of restaurants, cafes and entertainment, without having to risk traveling outside the complex. There is a small fitness room - one could expect more facilities such as sauna, etc. Breakfast outside facing the square was plentiful and

The only people I can think of recommending this hotel to are single travellers planning to stay out late. I was here on business - bad mistake. I arrived at the hotel around 8pm; I had a breakfast meeting at 7am the next morning so wanted to just relax for an hour or so, watch TV, maybe have a sandwich (i'd had dinner on the plane but those dinners are not so filling these days)... ha. There is no room service at this hotel. For the price of the accommodation, I was astounded. Yes, there is a restuarant downstairs and many at Montecasino, but I didn't want to "go out" and eat, I was tired and wanted to relax. Anyway, I decided to snack on the biscuits that were with the coffee stuff and settle down to watch some TV. To find it drowned out completely by the musical

Your comments are greatly appreciated. The hotel is a new build and has been trading for one year. The initial window frames were not suited to the environment that we are in and therefore we are currently replacing all 179 window frames of the hotel.

Sun Square Montecasino – Happening place for happening people??? This isn’t a classical review, more a short description of my adventures with Sun Square Montecasino: I was supposed to spend 6 nights in the Sun Square Hotel in July 2007, from the 18th to the 26th (now you might wonder how it adds up to 6 ... I spent the weekend in Capetown). I flew from Budapest via Frankfurt to Johannesburg overnight; the total flight-time was about 15 hours. After arriving to Johannesburg in the morning, I went directly to the company which I had business with. Totally exhausted and deprived of sleep I got to the hotel at 7 pm, wanting for nothing but a bed. Upon check-in I was presented with the misfortunate situation of the hotel being overbooked, and in spite of my confirmed booking I
