Detailed Reviews
Location is perfect, we were able to walk just a few blocks to the Marina where there are rental water craft, Tahoe Cruises, and the beach. Room was simple but clean and the staff was not only very helpful but also delightful. This is not a 5 star Hotel but a very affordable motel with great value. No A/C so could be something to think about during the summer.

We arrived in a storm with no reservation. It was last minute - the roads were closing and we were actually supposed to stay in Reno, NV. A last minute phone call confirmed the availability of the room and we pulled off the road into the motel desperate to get out of the snow. Augberine came out and shoveled a spot clean for us to pull into and then showed us to our room - all with a welcoming smile. The room was great - exactly what we wanted with a beautiful view of the snow outside. The beds were super comfy and the heater was warm and reassuring after the trauma of getting stuck in the high Sierras with a blizzard for company.
I want to thank the fine folk who run this place and want to assure them that my family and I will definitely stay with them again every time that I come to South Lake Tahoe!

We stayed in South Tahoe after a Jeep adventure on the Rubicon Trail. We finished the trail earlier than expected and decided we needed a real bed and running water instead of camping another night! I called directly and a room was available so we booked it for the night. The staff checked us in quickly so we could get settled. Guests were enjoying the pool and other outdoor spaces and we wished we had more time to enjoy them too. The room was spacious, clean and we got a great night's rest. While we had booked elsewhere for the remainder of our time in Tahoe, after leaving the property we wish we had stayed at the Alder Inn the whole time. Maybe we'll be back one day!

The reason someone stays in a motel as opposed to a resort, other than usually lower cost, is because generally they have plans outside where they are staying, and are staying there to have a good night's sleep. We wanted to enjoy our stay at the Alder and the raving reviews on Booking.com, induced us to spend $711 including taxes, for three nights, to stay at this motel. Sadly, for all three nights, we suffered a miserable inability to have a good night's sleep.
First, the motel had a really old mattress which caved in, in the middle, so we invariably both roll to the middle. We asked the motel if they could change mattresses but of course they couldn't... they said they added a topper. It felt exactly the same. We both tried our best to adjust and sleep, but simply couldn't.
Second, the place has no air conditioning so one is forced to sleep with windows open, or suffer a smallish room with no air circulation (this seems like an old motel, likely 60s or 70s). It has an outdoor jacuzzi which it says is open from 10am to 10pm. However, on night 3, a group of people decided to throw a party in it until 3am, keeping everyone awake. We asked them to stop but they ignored us, so we called the hotel's emergency number. Someone answered and 20-30 mins later the noise stopped. The following morning, separately, another guest and the hotel's manager both took credit for stopping the late night party. Neither mattered, because we had lost yet another night's sleep.
Frankly, between the mattress and the partying, at $711, it's inexcusable. As I mentioned at the outset, we wanted to enjoy the Alder, but after three nights of weak to no sleep, we were happy to escape. Take our advice, if you want to sleep, unless you're a glutton for punishment, please ignore the Booking comments... and go anywhere else... you won't regret it.

My husband and I came to Lake Tahoe for New Year’s Eve and we made a mistake on the days we were staying at the hotel, we reserved 3 nights instead of 2 (each night was over 300 dlls because of the holidays) I went to the front desk this morning to tell them about the mistake and they said that they couldn’t do anything, no refund and no credit for future visits, so we just lost over 300 dlls. I totally understand that they said no to a refund but also no for hotel credit? I think that’s super unkind due to the room prices and all the COVID situation, we come very often to Lake Tahoe to ski and for sure we are never going to stay in this hotel again, sorry but you lose two very good customers. Don’t stay here, there are many good hotels around here with better customer service.

This is an older property in a good location under new management (ownership?). Rooms show their age, but are clean and reasonably priced for the area. An initial problem with the keypad was resolved, so after that I felt safe as a woman traveling alone. Rooms have a microwave, mini-fridge and fans. Upstairs rooms also have wall air conditioning. It was mostly quiet at night. Pool is currently closed. There are outside conversation areas (fire pits weren’t working) with comfortable seating to relax or visit with other guests. It is a short walk to Whole Foods, several restaurants and the Skyline Marina. Don’t expect luxury and you won’t be disappointed. I would stay again.

We had to do a late check in so we didn't have any interaction.
Our room was on the second floor and was decorated with what seemed to be a french theme.
The little extras is what I appreciate. I appreciate the coffee, the grounds, the areas to hang out. The pool and Jacuzzi. I appreciate the wine opener. Everything was very clean. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Something the hotel could improve on is the lack of hot water in the shower. The end of my shower left me on edge instead of relaxed. And their electrical sockets could be updates as it wouldn't hold anything we plugged into it( most for charging phone.)

We did not get the room we requested, even though we had reserved it months in advance.
Lukewarm water after a single shower at the end of the day (8 p.m.), not cool for the 2nd occupant of the room!
No stopper to close the bathtub and possibility of taking a bath -> lie #1
No battery in alarm clock
Brazier did not work -> lie #2
No shampoo in the dispenser -> lie #3
Fairy lights that shine like daylight at night, combined with no shutters and thin curtains, made it difficult to sleep.
No maid.
Pool and spa not in working order -> lie #4
...and no one on site to respond to all these needs which are nevertheless part of the services offered at the hotel (see "lie #".
Clearly overpriced to benefit from the equivalent of a motel6 in terms of services.
We definitely don't recommend... Save your money for another hotel.

The room was very dirty. There was an old pizza slice in the fridge from the previous guests. The fridge was on display and the water from the fridge was in the room. The furniture is very outdated and has a lot of wear and tear. I had to damp wipe the tables first. The outdoor pool is not usable. The whole hotel needs urgent renovation. There are no contact persons on site. I can't explain the previous positive reviews. The photos of the host of the rooms do not correspond to the actual condition. I have traveled across the country for over 4 weeks and have never experienced such a horrible stay anywhere.

We are 30ft from the Heavenly Shuttle. I don't think the Sierra Tahoe shuttle is running anymore....something i should research. Pray for Snow!
We do not have continental breakfast but we do have breakfast bars inside the office, We also have coffee keurig machines in every room along with mini refrigerators and microwaves. Hope this helps.
Sorry but I do not know age requirements
Hi, we have a ping pong table, bikes, bocce ball court, basket ball hoop and a grill. Thank you for asking.
Safe Travels,
Laura
I am coming to stay at the Alder Inn on July 4th- the 8th. What is recommended for clothing? Thanks.
High's will be in the mid 80's (its a dry heat) and low's will be in upper 40's. You will need summer attire, bathing suit (Lake, pool and hot tub) and a light cover for the evenings. Lake Tahoe is extremely casual place you can go to the best restaurants in shorts etc..... If you get easily chilled maybe a pair of jeans for the evenings should suffice. I hope this was helpful.
