Detailed Reviews
We LOVED our stay! Starting from booking in the beginning - we came in late and needed to make accomidations for a late check in and it was so easy and simple. Always very easy to get ahold of either via email or phone.
Once arrived, the room was clean, well decorated, and very relaxing. Having the fireplace in the room just added something extra! We loved it. The bathroom was updated and the shower had good hot water & water pressure, very important for us. Even though there was no fridge in the room, it wasn't needed as there is a community fridge & microwave on the second floor which more than sufficed.
The main lodge area had great furnishings, and someone on site from 8-8 to answer questions or sell their collection of drinks & food. There was also always water left out to fill up cups and serve ourselves for. The drink menu is quite extensive from white to red wine, and tap & bottled beer in addition to snacks. The cheese plate & bacon/chive biscuits are a must try.
Lastly the hot tub, having this for after a day on the slopes was fantastic! Clean, and a nice touch by hanging the lights above it in it's nook for privacy.
It's walking distance to quite a few restaurants and stores, and the shuttle for Heavenly stops just outside which is very convenient. We could not recommend this place more, and will only stay here when we return to Tahoe!

Me and my pregnant wife stayed in early July for a couple of nights during our babymoon road trip. Katie on the front desk was amazingly attentive to our endless questions and concerns. Given the state of the pandemic we felt safe and the rooms and utilities had been reconfigured so you felt they were as sanitised as could be.
I even forgot my shorts and they kindly mailed them back to me in LA. Thanks Katie and the team - we hope to be back when all this is over and have a proper vacation in Tahoe!

Our family of six, plus one of our children's boyfriend (so 7 people total), traveled to South Lake Tahoe for skiing between Christmas and New Year's Day. We rented a cabin and a room in the main lodge and stayed four nights.
I can't say enough good things about this property and its management. Katy was fantastic, always answering our questions prior to the visit about the ever changing restrictions caused by the Sars Cov-2 pandemic. The check-in process was simple and it was obvious that the management was cautious about their guests safety during the pandemic. The lobby is soaring and gracious, inviting the traveler to sit by the fire and take in the expansive view of the back of the property prior to taking their bags to their room. I stayed in the main lodge while my wife and daughters stayed in a large cabin. Both accommodations were spacious and cozy simultaneously. Robes, slippers and plush towels were provided. The beds and pillows were comfortable (even the pull out sofa had a memory foam mattress) which ensured a blissful nights sleep. The highlight was the in ground hot tub which felt fantastic after a long day on the slopes. I would not stay here with younger children since things are really geared toward adults with no real entertainment for children.. We traveled with 17 and 19 year olds so it was fine. The lodge is quiet, with mostly couples, so if you do have younger children I would suggest you stay in one of the cabins.
The lodge is located a short drive (5 min) to the California base of Heavenly, so access to the ski area is easy. As an aside, Heavenly makes it challenging to access the mountain (the central Gondola where you have to pay $20 for parking even with an Epic pass is a terrible access point for skiers) and the California lodge base is probably the best entry point even though the best of the skiing (including Motts and Killibrew canyon) is WAY over on the Nevada side. The lodge is also a short walk to the lake and less than a mile walk to the Heavenly Village. There are really great restaurants on Ski Run Road within east walking distance including Thai and Himalayan. I would also strongly advise you to start your day with coffee or Chai tea at Free Bird Chai which is located a short walk toward the lake on Ski Run. If you want to buy groceries Whole Foods is walking distance and Safeway is a short drive.
Thanks again Katy for making our trip so fantastic!!

We decided to try out Black Bear Lodge due to the high rating on Trip Advisor. We were met by two very friendly staff and offered two glasses of champagne when we arrived. We were allowed an earlier check-in than 3 PM which we greatly appreciated.
The common area (where the main fireplace is) was impressive. We loved the lodge timber beams and beautiful large fireplace. There were small tables set up for those that wanted to enjoy a glass of wine or read or play games.
Our only surprise (and a bid of disappointment) was that we were given a handicap room without being asked if that was all right.
We were a bit disappointed. We would have preferred a room without a plastic curtain and the room was quite small. Only enough space for the bed and small walking space around the bed. (Not at ALL like the photos we saw on Trip Advisor). They might have left out the Handicap Room photos?
There were a few areas that I would suggest for improvement- especially for the price point we were paying:
1. The toilet paper should be at the minimum two ply. When you pay close to $340 for a night you would expect the toilet paper to be at least two-ply.
2. The coffee maker in the room should be at the minimum a small Keurig.
They are in expensive and produce a much better cup of coffee than the type of coffee we had (which was more consistent with a low budget motel coffee maker).
3. It would be nice if the lodge would offer muffins and/or coffee in the morning. We had to walk a ways to find food for breakfast and there wasn’t a mini fridge in the room.
All in all I would return to Black Bear Lodge, but I would ask that I not be put in a handicap room. And, I would bring my own instant coffee and a small ice chest for creamer and breakfast food.
Thank you.

From the moment we arrived we felt like the ladies overseeing the lodge cared for our visit. You could tell there was a sense of pride in making sure our stay was a memorable experience. The room we stayed in was located in the lodge. It was charming and the bed was super comfortable. Hubby and I were celebrating our Anniversary. A box of truffles , wine , and a card was there for us as we entered the room which was a sweet surprise. The lodge was quiet & peaceful. The spa area was very private & pleasantly hot unlike some spas that are only lukewarm. Our room was spacious and clean. It was great having a patio deck to sit outside and listen to the birds chirp. We would stay again we absolutely loved our time at Black Bear Lodge. Thank you ladies for making our trip special.

Just got back from five fabulous nights at Black Bear Lodge and can't say enough about it. The staff is wonderful and has thought of everything room and amenities-wise (loved Larissa!), the place is so clean, bedding and towels are top-notch and feel spa-like, it is convenient to both skiing and the marina with its Ski Run Blvd location, is quiet and quaint, and feels like a private home away from home. We can't recommend it enough...summer or winter!

What a great place to stay. The lodge was beautiful with a large stone fireplace. We were led to our efficiency cabin 7 with its own large fireplace. It had a small kitchenette and a bathroom with huge walk in shower. We made use of the hot tub and the in room robes. The room had beach towels to dry off with and slippers to accompany the robe.
Bed was comfy. Only complaint was you could hear the neighbors in the adjoining second room of the cabin.
Very serene location which is convenient to Heavenly ski area, shops and restaurants. The hotel owners and staff were excellent.

Black Bear Lodge is a wonderful experience for folks who are looking for a homey, cozy stay at what feels like your relative's cabin in Tahoe. Katy greeted us for an early check in and offered a complementary glass champagne. They have a cute little menu of drinks and snacks as well. The property has two types of rooms- stand alone cabins in the back and rooms in the main lodge. My boyfriend and I got a room in the main lodge with a king bed and a small balcony. These rooms are cozy and quaint (better for couples who don't need a ton of personal space)! But I was really impressed by the details- super soft sheets, chocolates on the bed, and a lovely Fellow kettle with a pour over kit in each room. It felt like someone who actually cared about us had prepared the room.
In the main lodge, there's also a library of DVDs and communal refrigerator/microwave. Staying here made me feel nostalgic about trips my family and I took to Tahoe when I was little- multiple families staying in one huge cabin, playing games and watching movies with cousins.
Black Bear Lodge is very conveniently located (Whole Foods right down the street, Heavenly Village is a few minutes away, a bunch of ski rental places near by). When we checked out in the morning, Katy gave us little packets of trail mix to take with us to the slopes. She definitely went above and beyond! I ended up forgetting my (very expensive) North Face jacket in our room and she contacted me to arrange shipping it to my house. I would highly recommend Black Bear Lodge for solo travelers, friends, and couples looking for an intimate experience.

Stop your searching and stay here! Hubby and I visited in August for a long weekend. We both travel a lot for work and spend many, many nights every year in the big chains, but wanted something small and quaint for a romantic getaway. The Black Bear Lodge fit the bill perfectly. We stayed in the lodge itself (vs. the separate cabins) and I though was a bit worried that being on the first floor right next to the front desk would be noisy, it was not an issue at all. With so few rooms the lodge was a quiet sanctuary right up the street from the hustle and bustle of the lake. Every detail was well thought out and exquisitely executed; the décor, the amenities, the tiny details of each room, the selections at the wine bar, etc. The grounds were beautiful and we sat every evening before dinner on the deck sipping wine and taking in the gardens. The staff was friendly and helpful whenever we needed something. There are several great restaurants within close walking distance, and the lake itself is only about a 10 minute walk. We were sad to leave, but will be back!

April is a awkward month to visit tahoe.
The seirra mountains are starting to thaw in April so you just might be able to ski and hike on your visit. Visiting Tahoe any time of year is awesome
