Detailed Reviews
Turtle cove comes highly advertised and praised, and even though we had little to complain about, we also could not make up our minds, what stood out and was really great. The actual acc is spacious and was clean. The ground was well maintained and we used the "lappa" to prepare our lunch under palm trees. The "communal" side of Turtle Cove has definitely the younger, backpacking traveler in mind, and offers some couches and benches where wifi assisted, one can have a conversation in privat, with those left at home. The menu is ok, nothing to write home about, but there are plenty of restaurants in Tofo to choose from. The staff is friendly knowledgeable and always eager to assist. The beach is some 20-30min on foot away, and it looked safe enough to walk there.
Would I recommend Turtle Cove, Yes!? Would I go there again? I think I would try another acc in Tofo just to see something new.

Maybe during the high season this is a better option. For a solo traveler the location was just far enough from the main town that you needed to consider your safety when walking back alone at night. I never had any problems but was very alert. The rooms are nice but rustic. My room was always warmer than the outside. The wifi didn't work and hotel staff seemed unbothered- not a solid option for remote workers.
I was frustrated that when I went to retrieve my 1000 MTZ cash key deposit, I was told I couldn't have it back because they didn't have any cash. The deposit was applied to my food credit which was still less than the deposit and was told I could just order that amount in food. I wasn't hungry and did not want their food. That was a disappointing experience as cash is hard to get in Moz and I was relying on getting that 1000 MTZ back and paying with card.
Menu had great veggie options but food orders could take a while to be completed. An iced coffee took over 45 minutes and was room temp.

Couple, stayed for 3 nights in one of the chalets.
Size of chalet/room is fine, good elevated storage/shelves provided. Fan available. Bed comfortable enough, but mosquito nets needs to be replaced. Got quite a few bites at this place, probably because of rain and green and lush surroundings.
Had frogs in the bathroom and quite a few ants on the terrace, no big problem altogether. Experienced one night with heavy rains, water leaking through roof and dripping down on the mosquito net/us while sleeping was a bit annoying.
Common areas are very nice and chill. Spacious and lush garden, pool area looks good, although didn't use it. Restaurant/bar/lounge area has a good backpacker vibe to it. Food was excellent (many vegan/vegetarian options), and service provided by staff was good and professional.
Camping is offered year-round except December.
Tofo beach is within walking distance, 10-15 min by foot, depending on pace.
Would return, but chalets (at least number 4), could use some TLC.

Stayed in Turtle Cove for almost a week for New Year with friends in one of the rooms with 3 single bed. The experience was not pleasant as the air circulation in the room was bad. The temperature in the room can get crazy high during the day and remain quite hot at night, so there were a few nights that became quite unbearable for all of us to fall asleep, and no fan was provided when we requested one,
The room is very basic without any facilities, but if you only look for a place to crash for a night or on a low-budget trip, then you can consider about this, otherwise, I do NOT recommend for anyone to stay in the 3 single bed room until the room condition improved.
The toilet is shared with other guests, no hot water or light in the shower.
The common area of the place e.g. restaurant, lobby etc, are nicely decorated. Staff are quite friendly.

The place is pretty, beautiful garden, nice restaurant, nice pool. But the service is bad. When we arrived we were ignored. When ordering food we either waited for ages or didn’t get it at all and needed to order again. Some of the staff didn’t really seem to enjoy what they were doing there. The atmosphere between owner and staff seems very tense. Maybe that’s why.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Turtle Cove Lodge. It was worth coming to Tofo just to stay there. The service, food, location, yoga classes, friendly ambience could not have been better. The only negative was a rooster in the house/yard next to the lodge waking us up early in the morning. But that’s Mocambique 😊

This place is so cute. I stayed for 5 nights in a private room. Very affordable price. Just Friday was a bit loud because of the hotel in the back, the other nights I slept great. It’s very windy and I went in June so no need for fan. The staff and the owner are very nice. The food was good, healthy alternative to what I have been eating normally. I also did 2 yoga classes. It’s a bit far and dark to walk back at night if you have no car but thankfully it’s a very safe place.

Location & Facilities
Travelling in Africa can be a bit hit & miss and mozambique definitely had aspects of both especially as we decided to drive from maputo to tofo; a trip populated by road blocks and many small villages requiring you to constantly reduce speed and making the trip rather long. The resort itself is situated between two beaches; tofo and tofinho, but is not on the beach itself which means you either have to drive on the very bad roads or take a not unpleasant walk ( although as the day heats up you it gets less and less pleasant.
Facilities at turtle cove
The camp itself is cool and quiet and the staff are very friendly and laid back (if you want your room cleaned you need to ask them to do it). The rooms are fine- what you'd expect at a surf camp and after being moved we had hot water. Mosquitoes are prolific and while the fan and the net and mosi repellent helped, you do feel a bit harassed at night. Also there is a local club or shebeen next to the one end of the camp that plays music very early on some mornings- not ideal if you want to sleep in.
Although this is self catering the rooms do not come with cooking facilities or kettles etc so you would have to use their main kitchen (it has a staff only sign) but i used it on occasion with no problems. Alternatively their food is some of the best you'll get in the area. Shopping in the area is limited to mostly fresh fruit and veg and seafood but this is not prepackaged and cleaned and you'll have to go into the market to get it (also you wont get much of a selection) There is also a kettle and coffee etc in the central lodge where you pay about 25mets for a coffee.
Connectivity
At the time we went there was no wifi although the owner said this was in the plans for development. There is wifi in town and you will pay between 2 & 3 mets a minute for it.
Surfing and Yoga & other activities
If you plan on visiting this are specifically for surfing I'd suggest you do extensive research as there were no surfing waves during our ten day stay and after asking about some of the locals said that there is amazing surfing after cyclone season or something along the lines that it only works out for a couple of weeks each year. Also walking in the sun with surf board in hand from beach to beach looking for waves is really not the most pleasant experience. You can rent boards at turtle cove or at a few places in town and the water is beautiful and warm and the sand is squeaky clean. Lastly for beginners the surf instructor at Turtle cove is very good and we saw quite a few beginners really enjoy their first experience surfing and get decent oretty quickly.
The yoga on the other hand was phenomenal, with a brilliant yoga instructor (Laura Heininger) and between two or three classes offered a day at incredibly low prices you'll have all of your yoga need met. She accommodates all levels from beginners to advanced and if you're looking for growth in your yoga practice this is the place to find it.
As far as other activities go there are a couple of volunteer options such as teaching art at the local schools 9highly recommend) or volunteering at the local orphanage). Also there is deep sea fishing (really good) as well as scuba & deep sea diving, tours of the mangroves and many others which you pay for separately.
There are of course bars/ restaurants along the beach which are good places to chill out. Do expect some harassment from local vendors selling sculptures, painting, bead work, paintings and fresh seafood- there prices are very reasonable though so don't let irritation prevent you from making a few purchases. Do plan on doing a couple of the activities on offer ( prices range from 250- 1500 mets) or you may get a bit bored. And do ask the staff at turtle cove for restaurant suggestions before choosing a place as there are some really good local places and some really bad ones too.
