The house is as is on the pictures don't doubt that. You need a 4x4 in order to park in the yard. otherwise you'll have to leave your car by the main road which is about 500m away. Meg is a great host.

This is one of the nicest homes I've ever had the privilege of staying in - just the right balance of comfort and style and delightfully laid back.

The roll-away walls open up the whole villa to gentle ocean breezes and create a wonderful sense of space. The fittings and finishes are great and the proliferation of daybeds made Vanilla View pretty much unleavable.

My personal favourites: the sunken bath in the main suite and the outdoor memory-foam cushions. The hydraulic TV is a nice James Bond touch too.

Reanna, the manageress, was really friendly and helpful and the very sweet housekeepers Mira and Jose were an absolute pleasure to have around.

Together, they kept the house and gardens in tip top shape and Mira cleaned up the massive piles of dishes we managed to accumulate every night as we cooked our way through kilos of fresh seafood from the local market and beautiful fresh veg from a hydroponic farm ( up the road (Reanna connected is with both).

All in all it was an amazing few days and in many ways it was a blessing to be positioned away from the noise and hustle of town and the stretch of beach in front of it.

I'd recommend using Paulo for transfers (he's a legend) he's super efficient.

Fantastic place for family, couples ……you can get there by plane or by car. We drove from Johannesburg …. nice road. There are two options … the first one through Maputo, fascinating city but degraded. It's up to you find the wonderful places.
the second one is through Moamba, Xinavane on the EN1 ….no petrol station.

We had arranged a pickup from Inhambane airport but upon arrival we were told by local taxi drivers that the lady picking us up had left. This caused us great problems as our phones didnt work in Mozabique, so we had to borrow a nice lady's phone to call Vanilla View who never picked up the phone even though i called 10 times. Luckily i got hold of our travel agent in South Africa who managed to arrange another driver for us. This cost us half a day of the first day of our holiday and we were not happy at all. During the drive to Vanilla View we were planning to express our frustration to the manager, but upon arrival there were only two cleaners there who spoke two words of English. We tried to ask them when the manager would arrive but they did not understand at all. Luckily our kind driver Paolo recommended some nice restaurants to us, so at least we knew where to go and eat that evening, no thanks to management. Next day the manager Rianna arrived finally at 09:00. She was very apologetic that she was not there to pick us up and told us she was misinformed by the travel agent that we would arrive from Maputo, not Johannesburg. We dont think this was true as our travel initially was forwarded as an e-mail to Vanilla view and there is only one flight from Johannesburg a day to Inhambane. She did not want to take any responsibility at all for this mistake. We had wanted to plan our coming days on our arrival day but ended up wasting most of the following morning asking questions from the manager that really wasnt that helpful over breakfast and really could not say much more than go diving or to the beach to us as a recommendation.

Which brings me to the breakfast, which consisted of a small plate of three fruits diced that were prepared the previous day and stored overnight uncovered in the fridge, tea or coffee (when they didnt run out!), bread pieces that were precut and stored in the freezer, and egg (how you liked it), nothing else and the same for everyday. I informed the manager as we ate the first morning that i cant eat bananas nor can i eat eggs. The following morning i received the same and called to the manager that im really unhappy that i was given the same again even though i told her i cannot eat bananas and egg. All she could say was, had i made special dietary arrangements, to which i told her no, that i would expect a luxury accommodation to provide a multitude of breakfast items and especially change it after i had informed the management directly during the first breakfast. She then informed me that she had gone out of her way actually to buy me ham (nothing else, nothing of any of the items i listed that i would like for breakfast) and was told she was unhappy that the cleaner ladies had not given the ham to me and that she would call them to tell them to give it to me. Well she never called them and i checked the fridges and there was no ham, so she clearly was either lieing or storing meat in the heat which i would not eat either. The following day i was going for the morning dive and requested i could have my breakfast 15 minutes earlier, to which the manager via sms message replied, sorry cant do. The next morning (the day of departure) we chose not to eat breakfast as it was a complete waste of our time.

One day I had misplaced my key to the room and there was noone i could get a key from or help from. Luckily i found them as the manager was the only person with a spare set of keys, and even though she lived close by in Tofo, she would have been unable to bring them to Vanilla view as she had no transport! That same day I found our room had not been cleaned at all (the cleaners couldnt get in because they didnt have keys to the rooms, which is very strange as its completely normal to lock your room when you leave) and we still had no soap that we had requested the day before from the manager nor did we have toilet paper.

We were wondering why the manager was not there at Vanilla view at all, and there was nobody to talk to about our plans, tips on what to do or ask questions from. Then we found out the car we were renting was actually the same car the manager uses, so she couldnt come to Vanilla view! How can you manage a guest house from somewhere else?! So basically if you rent a car from Vanilla View then the manager will be taking a day off, as we found out as Rianna told us she went diving and by the fact she was only twice during four days quickly at the guest house
. Its ridiculous that because the manager has no car the guests are left on their own. Quoting what we read in National Geographic (South African issue 15) "... and dream hosts" - this is as far from the truth as you can get!

I would also make sure you take your malaria pills and perhaps bring your own mosquito net as the ones at Vanilla view have a 2cm gap all the way around the roof line, thus we woke up most morning with a net full of mosquitos (and malaria is very rampant in the area, Paulo our driver had malaria during our stay which was his 26th time).

All in all Vanilla View is a lovely place to stay, but had the worst breakfast i have ever received (or not received), the worst management (or lack of management) i have ever experienced with my wife. I would quickly sack the manager and get someone who can manage and carry responsibility and is nice to guests and listens to their requests and understands the hospitality industry.

We came as a family during the New Year season and we were all totally impressed. From the best design, to the expansive green vanilla view, this house was made for anyone who is into open space and simple luxury. We all felt so much at home. Thanks Reanne for taking our last minute reservation and being so accommodating. Love Becker Vaz family.

We stayed here on honeymoon and I could not recommend it enough! The guest house is 'take your breath away' beautiful with the cleverest of design touches that make everything come together perfectly. The service is friendly, welcoming and couldn't be more helpful with runs to town if you need it, help booking diving and anything else you might need. And all this at a very reasonable price. Thank you guys for a wonderful stay and for the perfect honey moon accomodation!!

On holiday there are always a multitude of factors that ultimately determine just how good a time you had; travelling, accommodation, food, staff, managers, airport transfers, flights, restaurants, everything down to the pillow that you place your head on the end of the day. With this limited time that we set aside out of our normal routine to relax and recuperate, holidays are often met with high expectations.

Vanilla View exceeded all expectations. The villa is the ultimate home and should win some kind of an architectural / interior design award. The staff, Reanna , Mira and Jose made us feel right at home. With a great tour and introduction to Inhambane and Tofo Reanna showed us where to shop for supplies and local produce and informed us about what the best things to do while in this seaside gem. Mira the housekeeper taught us some Portuguese phrases every morning and welcomed us in the afternoons to a spotless home and gave us beautifully made beds to rest our weary heads in the evening. Jose the gardener scaled palm trees for coconuts letting us taste fresh coconut water and even cleaned our rental car!

Its coral coloured sunrises and swaying palms, its plush white bathrobes and crisp linen, its friendly local fisherman with huge smiles and fresh seafood, it’s seeing the sky turn a million different colours at sunset, its bathing under the stars at night, it’s a holiday I will never forget!

A short flight from JHb, an even shorter drive from the inhanbane airport and a mere 5 palm trees down a sandy road, lies the peaceful haven of Vanilla View, Tofo. It is THE ONLY place to stay in Tofo if you are looking for simple luxury , beautiful living space, and a place to melt your weary bones into!

Everything about the villa is perfection. From small things like beautiful linen and towels to walls that slide, allowing you to take in the beautiful view and warm air at all times, a day bead overlooking the pool in the shade of a cashew tree, are just the beginning.

A fully equipped kitchen means you can make the most of the plentiful fresh produce available. Fish, clams, lobster and prawns haggled at the market, (our awesome host Reana gave us some tips about ideal prices, also don't be put off by the lack of fridges- its so fresh they don't need fridges), the most incredible fresh greens from the nearby nursery (Reana will show you where this 'blink and you'll miss it' gem is), freshly roasted cashew nuts, the sweetest pineapple bought off the beach, coconuts, delicious peri peri sauce from the ladies at the local market, and even some delicacies from the Chilli Chilli deli at the garage (wasabi, ginger and all ingredients you need for sushi), all are a must have part of the perfect holiday!

This being said, the last thing I want to do on holiday is wash dishes, so having the the lovely Mira around to happily take care of things while you are off kayaking in the nearby mangroves, is the cherry on top. The charming Jose is also around to help you, whether it's making the perfect braai or opening your fresh coconut. Both are around the villa all day and are a pleasure to meet.

We would advise putting one of the many spare mosquito nets around the villa, into the existing built in mosquito nets above your bed, if you are paranoid about mosquitos.

There is so much to do in Tofo itself, but Vanilla view is so wonderful you will find it hard to tear yourself away at all!

If you want to make the most of laid-back Tofo, swim and scuba-dive in an aquarium, which is the ocean off Tofo, but you want to do it in style and chic, at a very affordable price, Vanilla View is the place! The location is incredible, 5 minutes out of town, with an awesome unobstructed view overlooking the mangroves, Tofo town and the ocean. The architecture and interior design are absolutely fantastic! sleek design, but warm and inviting, exquisite details, that you just want to call home. The service and attention are impeccable. The hosts are absolutely great! welcoming, helpful, and more.... you just want to call them friends in Tofo (and they are happy to drive you to town and back anytime).
If you want to feel like stylish, chic, and a million dollars (while paying a B&B price), in an exquisite home away from home, don't look further. I have highly recommended this place to all my friends.

Hi How do I book a room in place? regards
Answer from casper v
tofo
Hi There Thanks for your request. You need a 4x4 for the last 700m from the main road to the villa. A lot of guests have actually left their vehicles at the church by the turn of and walk to the villa and back. Its very safe to do that. you could also phone a taxi service to help you out. We are about 1.6km to Tofo and the main beach. Regards Casper
