AMAZING experience both times!! I have been fortunate enough to visit this wonderful villa and experience their amazing Chef, Franco and assistant, Paola twice in the last five years!

The first visit was with my sister when I booked the villa randomly for a sister’s trip. Tuscookany can be booked online and then you are sharing the property with other travelers similar to a hotel. A great time but we pondered gathering our friends and taking over the entire property. This came to fruition when 20 of our friends joined us and enjoyed a week of cooking, sightseeing and relaxing!

The entire week was organized with the help of the efficient staff of Lena and Liz. We choose three days of cooking, a day trip to a not to be missed Villa Ripa winery, train to Florence and miscellaneous other trips to local towns organized by the amazing Lena! She really can do anything!

My profession is a chef and I have had the fortune of working with some talented instructors but none compare to Chef Franco! The cooking, meals, presentation, table settings and any unique dishes make that alone worthwhile the trip. He is a master in the kitchen!

The property is quiet, beautiful and serene. The rooms are extremely clean and simple. The dining spaces spectacular! Honestly I cannot say enough good things about this property and experience.

After a seven year hiatus we finally got to return to Torre del Tartufo and were welcomed back like family by Franco, Paola, and Lena. It was another special week of cooking, making new friends, and the special treat of seeing friends from the UK that we met on our first trip there.
The weather cooperated and we got to really enjoy down time around the pool, the hot tub, and great massages……and wonderful meals that we learned to prepare,
All in all, a truly great week in every way…cudos to the entire staff for making each day better than the last! I look forward to returning to celebrate my 80th in three years!!

We had an Amazing time enjoying the villa's amenities then cooking school at 3:00 or 1500 if you prefer.
I scheduled a massage before I arrived because air travel is uncomfortable, the Chinese hot oil massage was just what I needed.
The Sauna, steam room, hot tub and pool were all enjoyed on various days.

Chef Franco is amazing! We enjoyed his lessons so very much I bought his cook book as soon as we arrived home. He is a very creative chef and an excellent teacher.

We own a food trailer and our lessons will really help us up our game for catering opportunities.

We highly recommend this cooking school vacation get away.

Our week at Torre del Tartufo was absolutely magical! We had such a great time and I learned so much from Franco and Paola. Everything was perfect, the food, the accommodations, the other guests, everything! I came home with a renewed interest in all things kitchen and cooking. I have been touting this trip and Tuscookany to everyone who will listen. It was just the best trip we have ever taken. Everyone — Alex, Franco, Paola, and Nikko bent over backwards to make sure we were having a good time. Thank you so much!

This Tuscookany trip was incredible. I had high expectations, based on reviews and it exceeded ALL of them. The villa is beautiful and picturesque. Lena makes you feel like family. Franco is the chef and was AMAZING! He is a brilliant chef and you can tell he enjoys his work. The staff are ALL great! The food is AMAZING. Great ingredients with great instructions from Franco and Paula (excellent chef too!) I may do it again.

We were really looking forward to staying at the villa, but we were greatly disappointed by a number of things. First of all, the place is very remote and even the taxi drivers refused to take us to the villa ( it happened to 2 more groups of people on the arriving day) and we had to call the villa's manager to get help with transportation to the villa. The villa is located up on a hill with a nice view. During our stay we could not use the pool as the water was very dirty from algae growth, there even were rocks on the bottom of the pool to hold floor tiles from floating. It was getting greener each day. At first the manager was telling us that it's normal for Europe, but when no one could see the bottom of the pool, she started to put some chemicals in it without success. As we travel with younger kids, the pool was essential for a good vacation. Honestly, there is not much to do for kids there. Even swings were broken. Cooking classes were enjoyable as we got to know other people in the group, and it was fun to work together. I liked the cooking book we got. Out of the week we stayed, we had 4 cooking classes in the afternoons and 1 full day of excursions. Nothing was organized in the mornings. Dinners are nice, good food, good ambiance. The manager works for 2 villas, so we saw her on the arriving and departure days and occasionally during the day. Most of the time guests entertain themselves. The sauna was broken for most of our stay, and the spa area was not in working condition either. Some people commented that it would be nice to jog around the villa, but trails are not marked. Biking and walking is challenging as well because of the bad roads condition, fitness equipment in poor condition. There were a lot of bugs at that time of the year, especially flies, including in the kitchen. The villa has a lot of potential, but there is no value, level of service inconsistent with the price, no attention to details, no feeling of a special place, and the place is not well maintained. Usually, when we travel and leave a place, we dream about coming back. That is not the case with Torre del Tortufo.

We are sorry to read that you were so disappointed. The villa is remote but that we think that is the charm about it and most guests just love getting away from it all up in the Tuscan hills and yet being only 20 minutes away from Arezzo. We have structured the week offering our guests a combination of fun time cooking and dining together, but also enough time "to do their own thing" Relaxing or exploring the area. So if the full day culinary excursion is not enough we offer many extra excursion options for those who are interested - these were listed in your book. Quite honestly when reading your review we realized that this cooking vacation is not suitable for children and will take your advice and restrict the age of children to 14 years in the future. The fact that the pool had a problem for a couple of days must have been disappointing and we apologize for this – sudden change in termperature can cause this. I am pleased to read however that you liked the recipe book, the cooking lessons and enjoyed the company of the other guests. Thank you for your suggestions.

The setting on a hill in Tuscany is just beautiful and remote. The staff were all terrific...Lena was our hostess and managed everyday schedules, made great cookies and coffee cake, and also became our tour guide on Wednesday. Her husband Alex manages the grounds and engineering for 3 different sites, but always stopped by to say hello and chat. Chef Franco and his life partner (and kitchen partner) Paola were the most patient people with excellent sense of humor.
He had great recipes and tips to make things easier, or to make ahead. His pizza dough recipe was the best ever...and it made delicious focaccia and strombolli too. The gnocchi was out of this world, and the ravioli was delicious. We learned to bone a duck for ragu, and clean up rack of lamb. We cleaned an artichoke for a antipasto soufflé. Semifreddo? you bet, panne cotta? oh yeah...tiramisu? oh my word.... Everything was just fabulous. We can't say enough. One of us is a good cook, and the other is not. Both of us had a great time. Do yourself a favor and sign up for this fantastic experience.

My top "complaints":

1. My bed was too comfortable, While snuggled under the fabulous down comforter surrounded by the antique furniture it was too hard to get out of bed! Once I forced myself out of bed my feet were immediately warmed on the heated bathroom floor which allowed me more time to just stand at the window and soak in the fabulous grounds and views...which of course made me late for breakfast!

2. The house itself had too many cozy spots to spend time in. It was a difficult decision each day...should I sit in the fabulous outside grottos filled with pillows and enjoy the peace and solitude of the villa. should I curl up on the fabulously comfortable couch in the tower living room with the fire roaring as I read my latest novel. or should I sit in the cozy bar area with candles burning, sitting on my extra large down filled club chair as I sip a glass of wine and converse with some of my new friends. Or should I sit in the hot tub under the stars with a glass of wine...way too many choices.

3. Speaking of wine...the problem here is the fact that each night there was too much wine. Every night they provided us with unlimited bottles of a new specialty wine from the different regions in Italy. if in fact you didn't care for the choice wine of the night (which never happens) there were always bottles of the house wine that was delicious and way too easy to drink! With the many bottles of wine available the problem arose of having too much fun; the laughing and multiple conversations around the table made us forget we were actually learning something! Oh and I dare you to get bitten by the "rattlesnake"...a fun after dinner drink tradition that makes for a late night filled with more giggles and conversation!

4. The food is too good. The breakfast is always beckoning us from our rooms with the smell of freshly brewed coffee, eggs cooking, fresh fruit and cheese platters. So it forces you to get out from under your cozy comforter! You dine family style in the dining room or you simply take your food to any location and enjoy! The lunch is served on the veranda, on the grass, or the courtyard with the table beautifully decorated with flowers from the villa's grounds which are hand cut each day by the ever talented Paula. Sipping a glass of sparkling wine, dining on a delicious meal in the beautiful setting is something out of a movie! The mornings and afternoons are at your leisure to rest, tour the surrounding areas, get a massage and enjoy the beauty of Tuscany!

4. Franco the chef and his ever present amazing assistant Paula brought with them their own problems. You see I dont know how to cook nor like to cook. Each day at three o'clock we put on our personalized aprons and brought with us our complimentary cookbook which is filled with recipes and other very appreciated information. We were divided up into teams to prepare our four course meal for the evening. We were not put with our friends which forced us to get up close and personal with all the other guests. We chopped, kneaded, boiled and cooked together for seven days while Franco provided guidance (lots of extra guidance for me!) and tricks of the trade and Paula followed behind making sure each dish, knife, pot and table were spotless! The problem was we got too close to our fellow "chefs in the making" and saying goodbye at the end of the week was painful. The other problem is I now like cooking and kind of know what i am doing which makes my friends and family think they need home cooked meals on a regular basis. Also coming home without Franco's guidance and Paula following behind me cleaning up my mess left a big void in my cooking experience! We can't stop wishing they were with us in the kitchen but we never stop remembering all our laughs and new friendships while preparing our assigned recipes!

5. The field trip day is fabulous but it demands that you hop on a comfortable bus and enjoy a day out visiting farms, wineries, enjoying fabulous scenery, a homemade lunch in a family villa , etc. The problem here lies in the fact this requires you to leave the villa. This was such a difficult decision so I personally chose to enjoy the lounges by the pool, reading my book in the sunshine, taking a run down the beautiful trails around the villa, soothing my muscles in the hot tub, taking a swing on the tree swing enjoying the wildflowers, and taking a nap on my favorite couch by the fire! Those that went on the field trip loved their experience but I was thrilled with my day of solitude in the beauty of this home.

6. The other problem is that the instructions didn't ask us to bring a large amount of extra cash. You see you don't need cash for anything at the villa unless you want a fabulous massage in their beautiful spa...the massage is very reasonable so you will undoubtedly have enough cash but the problem there is the massage is so good you want another one..here comes the need for extra cash! Tipping is obviously not required but at the end of this fabulous week in paradise you want to make sure you show each and everyone of the staff members how much you appreciated the non-stop, above five star, service!

7. The villa experience causes deep depression. Saying goodbye to the staff brings tears, saying goodbye to your new cooking friends brings tears, and saying goodbye to "our" villa is gut wrenching! Once at home after getting over jet lag, enjoying your photos, having emailed all your new friends, you plan a dinner party with new found confidence. You can't wait to cook and share your new recipes. While preparing the dishes with my friends, setting the table with candles and fresh flowers I sit back and listen to the laughing and camaraderie around the table and wonderful memories and gratitude fill my heart. Memories are filled of my special time at cooking school and grateful for the experience of a lifetime.

Thank you all for a most wonderful week of cooking, friendships, and memories. It was simply amazing!!!!! Can't wait to come back!

We look forward to welcoming you in Tuscany! You are more flexible if you rent a car and the recommendations of Jeannie above are great. If you do prefer we arrange a driver for you that’s also fine but you only have two days so it would make more sense to visit some of the places on your way to Rome

Hello You are more flexible if you have a car as you have plenty of free time to explore the area and the villa is quite remote. Alternatively we can arrange a transfer from Florence airport to the villa. The cost is € 220.00 to Torre del Tartufo. If you let me know your flight details closer to the time we can arrange this for you. You can also get to Arezzo with public transport and you can get a cab to the villa from Arezzo train station. For train schedules have a look at the following website – very handy. trenitalia it All our beds are European kings which is slightly smaller than an an American King but a lot larger than a Queen. We look forward to welcoming you in Tuscany!
