Stayed here just after Xmas. Resort was Very Busy and Full. Check in is at 2pm and most rooms will not be ready before that time. The accommodation is split over the entire resort with Time share chalets adjoining. There are four Restaurants offering different selection of meals. The main restaurant buffet is R240 per dinner and pizza R110 . There are swimming pools and water slides for the kids. The resort also offers zip lines and archery, bicycles for hire, golf, bowl, tennis, mini golf and volley ball. Plenty of walks. Its a 3 hour drive from Durban and on tar roads although watch out for sharp bends and pot holes after Underberg!

We stayed in the Fairways chalets but every single room and type of accommodation in the resort is top notch. The resort is still as charming as the good old resorts from our youth but with modern conveniences and facilities. The animal farm and water park are epic fun for the little ones and the safe and plentiful paths and hiking trails to some of the most idyllic views in the world will satisfy any level of rambler. I can easily rate this resort as my happy place. Another great feature is the multitude of restaurant options in the resort catering to every palate and giving diners the choice of different meals each day. The terrace has epic views of the mountains and is the best place for daily sundowners. Can't wait to go back again

The views of the mountains on a clear day are beautiful but the rooms are run down with marks on the carpets and furniture. Unfortunately it was raining very heavily when I was there which made getting from the reception to your room challenging. The pool area is nice with a small heated plunge pool.
The bar areas were not great and smelt stale and the pool tables had missing balls which was disappointing.

There are baboons around so you need to be careful to lock your doors carefully otherwise they will get into the room.

The food however was delicious, the buffet had a lot of choice but it was very good quality food.

My family and I (2 adults and 2 children) stayed at the hotel early June. We were allocated a room with one very small electric heater. It wasn't until late in the evening that we realised the room was not getting any warmer, as we checked in late and went straight for dinner. I should have called for more heaters, but as we were only staying for one night in the room we hunkered down under extra blankets. The next morning my husband showered but 2 minutes into my shower the water went cold. I was told maintenance would come and sort. Maintenance arrived quickly and told me I would have to wait for it to heat up again as we shared it with the room next door. I decided not to wait and I am glad I didn't, as an hour later it still wasn't hot enough.

I told the front desk manager of our issues and that we were due to stay again the following night. I asked him to guarantee that this would not happen again - he said they used the same heaters in the chalets as the bedrooms (they are stand alone rooms, not actual hotel rooms) but he was sure they would not be as cold. After several calls that day to cancel my booking I was finally told the GM would call me back - this was Saturday at 3pm. I called back an hour later and was told he had left for the day, and so had all managers that could deal with front of house cancellations/ issues. I called back again a dozen times Sunday and was promised a call back on 4 occasions from a manager, but no one called me back. In the meantime I had booked another hotel and was going through two days off stress as to whether I would be charged for me booking I had tried to cancel. Finally, after calling twice more Monday morning (again no one called me back), I got to speak to a manager (from 4pm on Saturday to 11am Monday morning there was no manager to speak!) who cancelled and my booking and told me a refund would be made. Six days after completing the paperwork I am still waiting for my refund.

While the area is stunning, and the hotel at some point would definitely have been a great place to stay, it seems to have been lacking any sort of attention recently. The staff were plenty, and bistro staff very friendly, so it's not due to not having people to see the problem areas. Eg the Bistro restaurant had no working fire place or heater - both were there, but one didn't work and the other had no gas. The hotel seems very uncared for as the positioning will guarantee visitors. Worst of all the management is non shocking.

Thank you for your review and feedback. With apologies, the period you stayed just after the snowfall had extremely low temperatures into negative degrees. We agree, this did and always will affect many of our areas, constant hot water included. Our front office manager was on duty on Saturday until after 4pm, and we believe our Exec HK spoke to you on the Sunday? Your refund was processed on Monday for completion, which unfortunately can take a few days to process. We apologise for the delay. Thank you again for the comments, we have addressed this with our team on the resort.

The service was so poor it became a running joke for the rest of our weekend. Where do we even start, from check in ….being told our room wasn’t ready before the guy even knew my name. Dinner buffet, literally held at the door till 6:30 ticked on the clock, thou shalt not arrive at 6:28 for a 6:30 booking. Breakfast a disaster, coffee machine and toaster not working, breakfast was poor (but good fresh fruit) Dinner buffet was great though. Tasty and good spread. Had a family interleading room with a distinct 1970’s feel - can only watch one show on both TVs so beware if you plan on catching up with the news while the kids want to watch cartoons in the next room, not going to happen. And guys it’s 2024, what hotel as a 250mb cap on wifi anymore, felt like I’d slipped back to 2010. Seriously a 250mb cap. Location is their saving grace.

With apologies for your experiences at Drak Gardens. Respectfully, we do advertise our check in time and restaurant opening times for all our valued guests, whilst our staff prepares for arrivals. We acknowledge an issue with the coffee machine one morning. And, we do not have fibre to our resort that can manage massive connectivity of the potentially 1000 guests that can be staying on the resort. We will continue to try and improve and hopefully do better in future. Apologies again.

The furnishings in your lodges and restaurants need to be upgraded.
At least one of the beds in the family rooms should be a queen size bed, double beds are too small.
The pool area could do with a few more shaded areas for parents to sit.
The serving staff in the restaurants take a very long time to clear and reset the tables for the next booking slots.

Many thanks for your review and feedback. We always take cognisance of our valued guests' comments, which we will address on the resort. With apologies, our food and beverage team are quite driven over these extremely busy seasons, with a full hotel / resort over extended periods. We will certainly address those unnecessary niggles you encountered.

Beautiful location and good offering of facilities for families.
However, I would not return to this hotel due to the run down rooms and lack of adequate maintenance- old, threadbare linen and duvets; dirty lounge suites; uncomfortable, old beds; musty smelling cupboards etc Many rooms have no view of the mountains at all!
Baboons are a big problem on a daily basis - aggressively open the doors & windows of the units. Management need to look at better solutions as guests are frightened of the baboons.

Thank you for your review and feedback of your stay with us. Obviously disappointing, which we have addressed with our housekeeping team on the resort. Unfortunately, agreed, not every single room / unit on the resort has mountain views. We have been working on the issue of the baboons, and being a sensitive subject, have to apply some conservative caution in dealing with the matter. We assure you, this is not through a lack of trying. Many thanks for your review again.

We stayed in bluegum chalets and had the misfortune of having neighbours whose sole purpose of coming to the berg was to get as drunk and loud as they could. Security was called on several occasion on the first night but were ineffective, simply asking them to be quiet and then leaving, only for the noise to continue. Fortunately they passed out at around 1:30am on the Friday night. Saturday night was exactly the same until I went out at 1am and shouted at them to shut up. Rooms need maintenance as well with windows and doors needing to be slammed to be shut. To be fair, the kids had an absolute blast and all asked if we could go back one day. This was my first time to Drak Gardens. Riverbend and Fairways look like significantly better accommodation options but were not available to us due to the lateness of our booking.

Thank your for your review on your stay. Unfortunately we do have guests that are not respectful of the space, and other guests' needs. That was true of your time with us. We have addressed the lack of follow up with our security company who provide us with 24 hour security on site. Guards may not leave until these noise makers have been properly quietened. Happy to hear the kids had a great time, and we do hope you will return to Drak Gardens again sometime. Kind Regards

Made to pay for my breakfast twice (breakfast was supposed to be included in booking), and room roof was leaking during rain. The location was great but left the resort feeling a bit scammed. Would recommend eating at the berg view restaurant instead of the buffet, the buffet dinner is very bad which is odd considering how expensive it was.

Thank you for your review, which we have here, and on another review site. Quite unfortunate in terms of the perception that the hotel left you with a feeling of being "scammed." We can confirm that your reservation was in a self catering "room only" unit. i.e. a rate that excludes meals. And we can confirm also, with no breakfast being prepaid for, or received by the hotel. Or charged for twice. With apologies and thank you again for your feedback.
