Detailed Reviews
They deserve 5 stars alone for the fact that they had a generator powering the entire resort during our visit which coincided with 11 hours of lead-shedding per day (stage 6).
Deep in the Southern berg a short distance from Underberg (on a terrible road), this little gem is part of a greater resort called Drakensberg gardens, all managed by the Gooderson group. The actual facilities are sparse at fairways but guests have access to the all the facilities of drakensberg gardens including the restaurants (which I never tried). Fairways offers a large pool with 2 separate jacuzzis, a games room and a kiddies play area. There is also a small dam where you can hire SUP's or kayaks. The dam is at the golf club house and the golf course is a big attraction here. The rest of the facilities are at drak gardens about 500m away. Some are free such as the mini water park, while others very well priced. Some of the activities include, tennis, squash, bowls, horse riding, archery, putt putt, zip line, rope adventure, etc
Fairways is classified as a gold crown resort which I would think is a step too high. The chalets had no air conditioners or fans and while it does not detract from the experience it simply cannot be a gold crown resort without these. We were there during a heat wave and would have welcomed these. Also the finishes and furnishings are quite dated, I would think they need some upgrading to be able to maintain Gold Crown status.
The chalets itself are reasonably private and comfortable with patios and weber braais. The loft room above the dining area makes it slightly claustrophobic and reduces natural light. Kitchen is small but well equipped. The frying pans should be non stick. Cleaning service was exceptional. DSTV channels were more than adequate. You can even hire dvd's. Cell signal and wifi was poor, although I don't think it was the resorts fault. The cell towers were on the property so cannot understand why connectivity was so erratic.
Beginner hikers can try the on site trails and more advanced hikers can go to the Parks board about 3km away and try climbing the Rhino Peak or other hikes.
The property has access to the River, and its well worth trying a swim in the crystal clear water at hippo pools if its warm enough. The shop at the main entrance stocks some basic groceries and if you need more stuff you can try the Elands Rest shop about 5km back on the main road, you can even get halaal food there.
Overall a very relaxing break.

The Fairways chalet (6 sleeper) was absolutely clean and upon arrival found the dining table neatly set.
Nice view of the golf course even though I am not a golfer.
The resort golf clubhouse also offers a nice sunset deck at the water edge of a beatiful dam.
Accommodation, reception and activities a definitive "A".
The biggest disappointment of the week was a dinner at "The Bergview" restaurant, situated at the resort hotel pool.
We ordered the butterbean and smoked chicken soup, which was quite tasty.
For mains my wife ordered the oxtail served with mashed potatoes. This she found acceptable.
On the other hand, I ordered the lamb casserole served with buttered potatoes.
This was not a dissapointment but an utter disaster. First of all, it tasted as if the black pepper lid fell of when the dish was seasoned. My mouth really was on fire.
Secondly, I understand lamb casserole is fatty/rich, but to serve it with buttered potatoes, to me is pushing the fat content envelope. I asked the waitress whether the dish could be served with mashed potatoes, but no alternative starch option was given.
The manager did agree with me that the dish was over seasoned with black pepper and offered an alternative dish.
At that stage my mouth was burning and I had no desire to eat any further.
The dish was removed from my bill, but my birthday dinner was spoilt.

Booked in at the self catering chalets. Rooms are in good condition, appliances and dishes also provided.
Amazing views and plenty to do in the resort. Never left in 4 days. There's Jacuzzis, slides, 1 heated pool, kids play areas, archery, zip line, horse riding, hiking and bike trails. There's also a spring water stream through the resort, can visit hippo pools to enjoy this. Only downside is that the towels and Linen are only changed on a Tuesday and Friday. If requested, towels cannot be changed daily during your stay. We found this Rather unhygienic.

I own a timeshare week here and every year things are just getting worse and worse at Fairways. One of the two Jacuzzis did not work at all during our entire week long stay. The other had very limited functionality and was filthy most of the time. The main pool was starting to turn green. The karaoke night did not work again for two years running now because of their WIFI signal they say, yet there are many karaoke systems that do not require live WIFI signal, why don't they just get one of those. Really disappointing. There was blood on one of the sheets from a previous guest, the bed was made up with this blood on it. Really gross. The water features at the put put had not been filled in ages. Management are just letting things slide. What a shame. We left a request for the manager to get back to us about our concerns, yet they never did.

A magnificent location right at the foot of the Garden Castle mountains. Beautiful kept golf course and amenities. Lots for the children to do either on their own or organized activities. From bicycle hire to archery, wall climbing, hiking, swimming in both hot and cold pools, water slides, bowls, arcade games. Then the adults can have fun too. There is a sports bar with various night time activities (karaoke, bingo) there is no lack for entertainment. With many restaurants on site or self catering in your unit, sit on your veranda and light a fire and enjoy the view. You wont be disappointed.

We spent a week here to recharge our batteries away from home and work. The resort is beautiful and serene and the facilities are good. There are beautiful walks and trails to go on and enjoy the fresh crisp air of the mountains. For the not so adventurous you can spend time at the wellness centre and heated pools and jacuzzi. There are ample restaurants on site but you would have to ask for them to cater for you for specific dietary requirements eg if you want a halaal meal they will prepare it separately. If you jot happy with this arrangement then cooking your own meal is the alternative. There's much to do on site like golf, horse riding, archery, putt putt and zip lining to name a few. Overall we have had a lovely time at this resort

we booked for 2 houses and asked the houses to be closed to each other which never happen. when the reception contacted the person who booked the houses for us, he was extremely rude and dropped our calls. 2- at the reception when we check in the gave us the wifi details only to found out that there is no wifi at all at the houses , no router nothing, but they are giving people the wifi details just to make you stupid, they admitted to this when i confronted them. 3. the 1 house there is no micro oven but they say its self catering houses. the good part is the houses are clean, the cleaning ladies are very friendly and the receptionist are very friendly and helpful. the restaurant is perfect and even at the pool area the staff there is great. the hiking is out of this world. i will love to visit again only if they dont put me in houses 115 and 161

My husband and I were approached on the street in Phillipsburg to scratch a scratch card to win a prize. We felt pressured to do it but we did. Of course they told us we won because as you know everyone does. At first they said I won $500 dollars. Then it turned into $500 dollars, an iPad or an i-phone and they promised us for a 30 minute timeshare speal we would be given the prize. We got to the resort and they immediately told us it would be 90 minutes. We said whoa whoa - we were told 30 minutes. So the initial guy lied to us. We also found out that we could win a 5 night stay at a jw Marriott. Once we heard that we knew that's what we were going g to receive.
Long story short - after almost 2 hours we were finally able to to break free. They told us that we did if fact win the vacation.
Here's the real kicker. We could pick from Tampa, Jacksonville or Alaska. Hmmmm - didn't Tampa and Jacksonville just get hit by a hurricane, so we picked Alaska only to find out that you can't go from May thru August because it's the blocked out time period. Unbelievable.
I took the time to write this review to save future travelers to St. Marten to not fall for the same scam that we did.
It was a total waste of time from such a beautiful island.

A friend offered me a 2 night stay at 164 Fairways a self catering 6 sleeper chalet. The chalet was top class and spacious. It also provides beautiful views of the Drakensberg mountains. The cleaners were very professional visiting twice a day. There are magnificent facilities to keep the children busy. We enjoyed the tennis and squash courts. The place feel so isolated yet you have all the amenities. I will definitely come back for a longer stay.

The most beautiful setting with the most amazing views one can imagine! Heartwood cottage gets 10 out of 10 for cleanliness, comfort, utensils, space, setting. We could live there forever. The pictures don't do this place justice. The resort has something for everyone and perfect for families. Rowen is a wonderful host. Thank you all. We will be back very soon.
