I had the pleasure of staying at Karoo 1 Hotel Village during my recent vacation in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The hotel is situated in a stunningly beautiful location! One is surrounded by mountains and the natural beauty of The Karoo in a most tranquil and peaceful setting! I greatly appreciate the fact that one is far enough away from the N1 so that one never hears any of the countless stream of vehicles that use the nation’s main highway! I greatly enjoyed hiking and exploring on the neighboring hills and in the gorge that descends towards your famous “rock pool!”

The facilities are outstanding! My room was spacious, comfortable and clean! Everything associated with the restaurant was wonderful! The menu had most impressive food and beverage options and the food was delicious! The buildings had the appearance of being painted recently. Not only is the hotel in a beautiful place, the buildings themselves fit the setting perfectly, as they blend well with the scenery with the classic white walls and consistent architecture!

The most impressive aspect of visiting the hotel was the quality of the people who comprise the staff! Every member of the staff is highly professional, friendly, helpful and consistently demonstrates outstanding customer service! From the moment I was first greeted by the property manager when I arrived until I left two days later everyone who assisted me made me feel like a most valued guest!

The chef is not only outstanding at food preparation but also is a very friendly individual who always make excellent recommendations for food and drink as well as local places of interest!

The servers were all highly competent, friendly and helpful in explaining menu options to me and making me feel at home in the restaurant, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner!

In summary, the Karoo 1 Hotel Village has outstanding facilities in an incredibly beautiful location and is staffed with people who are highly capable and very friendly and who are dedicated to providing guests with outstanding customer service!

I will look forward to returning to this hotel again in the future! I will gladly recommend the Karoo 1 Hotel Village to family, friends and acquaintances as a wonderful destination!

Absolute hats off to Karoo 1 for their amazing service and assistance. We were supposed to have our wedding at this beautiful venue in December. We went for a tasting and the cheff is absolutely brilliant, alongside the friendly, professional staff.
Unfortunately De Doorns had flooding the week of our wedding and the venue was also flooded. The owner contacted us to inform us and was willing to go above and beyond to get the place back into shape for our celebration to commence, and even offered to facilitate the wedding in January.
The weather forecast was unfortunately not looking good for the day of the ceremony and we decided together with the owner and helpful staff of Karoo 1 that we would change venues. Thereafter the owner refunded us and we were able to secure a different venue.
It was such a pity that we did not get to celebrate our special day at this beautiful, secluded location, however we will definitely head back there for an anniversary trip this year.

This beautiful accommodation offer 31 luxury suites in traditional Cape Dutch Karoo style.
Most of the room decor was made by local craftsmen and you will enjoy beautiful creations of artists from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Madagascar placed not only in the rooms but around the property.
Located in the most peaceful and beautiful area, Karoo 1 Hotel Village offers endless views and a place that you will have no choice but to unwind and relax.
What did I love about Karoo 1?
❤For me, it is definitely a Rock Pool, located within a short distance from the hotel. The location, the views are simply amazing. An ideal place to rest during a warm sunny summer day.
❤Also the team – very friendly and helpful.
Cannot wait to be back!
See you soon!

We had the unfortunate opportunity of booking our wedding at the venue - I would not recommend it for a big function. For a night or two away it’s great, well if they have stock of burgers and chips that they serve on the lunch menu, maybe call before and let them know you’ll be eating there.

Sadly our wedding was ruined but luckily we had incredible love and support on the day for all to be okay

List of things that went wrong
1. No towels in most rooms
2. No cushions in some rooms
3. Food was 2 hours late and was revolting, my own best friend had to go cook in the kitchen.
4 no toilet paper was ordered beforehand for the rooms
5 the managerial staff - so rude, making a bride and their family feel anything but special
6. If they cater your wedding they expect you to bring your own knives and plates and forks
The waiters were caught eating the starters in the kitchen instead of serving them to the guests
The bridal couple was not given any starters
7. They did not have enough stock of beinmaries to warn the 2 hour late food they catered
8. When we hit our bar tab and I asked for R5000 extension as I the bride was at the bar “Sorry dear until you go to your room and fetch your card I am inder strict instruction not to serve you another drink”
9. No bridal couple room turn down as promised in the package my room was a mess
10. We had to bring our own generators for them so that they could cater the food we paid them to make

The list goes on.

All in all , it is with great regret that I write this review choosing this venue was the biggest mistake I have ever made but I hope no one has to experience what we have had to endure on what was meant to be the best weekend of our life.

Response from Karoo One, Owner at Karoo 1 - Hotel Village
Responded 14 Mar 2022
At Karoo 1 we believe very strongly in treating people with kindness, fairness and respect. Our staff are lovely people who always try their utmost to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for all guests. Unfortunately during the planning of this wedding and on the special day, these values were not reciprocated. Our venue is absolutely beautiful, a true gem. The wedding was beautiful and enjoyed by the guests who were taken aback by the beauty of our property. Several guests in fact approached us to enquire about booking events, even a wedding. There was one room of which we are aware of that did not have fresh towels. It was unfortunately locked when our house keeping staff were there to replenish the fresh towels. She was brought to tears by the manner in which she was treated and the language used upon being confronted by the bride when replacing the towels. The food was ready to be served during the speeches, despite load shedding. The bridal couple were busy with their photo graphs when the starters were served. There were so many leftovers that we offered them to the staff who had worked tirelessly to make the wedding beautiful for the couple. Ample cutlery and crockery were provided by the venue. The bridal couple did not bring their own. It was agreed months before the wedding day that there would be a bar tab and when it ran out drinks would be served on a cash basis. Swearing at the poor barman when this transpired in the midst of the wedding is not in keeping with the love and kindness that a wedding should be about. As soon as we became aware that load shedding would occur during the wedding, the couple were advised to hire in generators, which they did. There was no issue in this regard during the wedding and we are happy that the party went on unaffected despite load shedding. We are very sad to learn that this couple do not share the love and affection that we do for our beautiful property and the people who work tirelessly to create a home away from home for our guests. Unfortunately, our core values of respect & kindness are not shared by all. Despite all of this, we wish the couple a life time of happiness.

My husband and I were traveling from Canada and visiting with his parents. We stayed in one of the barn suites for two nights. Such a picturesque place to spend time with the family! We loved the bonfire and the general friendly atmosphere, but my favorite part of the trip was the food and service. The staff were so knowledgeable ( we had many chats with the bartender Enzo) and really made our stay special. Burton (the sous chef) was simply amazing. He went out of his way to especially make a vegetarian friendly dish for me, and made a quiche for my mum in-law that blew her away. I mentioned that my husband was looking to bring home a good peri peri sauce and asked for his advice. He went into the kitchen and made us a batch of his homemade sauce to take home along with his recipe. He had so much passion for food which really reflected in his cooking. I would travel from Canada again just to eat his meals!! If i could give 6 stars i would :)

I have never stayed in the Karoo overnight, but had a mental picture of quiet and great starry expanses. Despite catching one of the few overcast nights, the stay exceeded all my expectations. The location itself is excellent, and the rock pool feels like discovering an oasis. The abundance of birds and other wildlife was a pleasant surprise. Yet the biggest surprise was the quality of the food at the restaurant. We enjoyed a selection of lamb and fillet dishes, and everything was prepared to perfection.
The breakfast baskets were extremely generous, and more than what we could eat.

The room were large and the floor is tiled. No loose mats next to bed. The tiles are cold. There was no little bar fridge with 2 bottles of water. The 2 water bottles was on the coffee stand. No extra blanket and were given a second duvet....you also do get small long life milk pods but there were creamer. The milk pods will make a vast difference. The milk pods and water bottles to be placed in bar fridge...also take note that some medicines must be kept cool in refrigirator and there was no bar fridge. This do have an impact on insulin as insulin pens must be in a "fridge"..we really would have stayed longer but due to no bar fridge and no mats on the floor we stayed one night. But that spash pool in the kloof are stunning.

It's okay, not bad but not great either. It is set in a beautiful and scenic location. The staff were very friendly and helpful and all the basic amenities are available, however the entire place needs a little maintenance to live up to it's full potential.

We were looking forward to staying in a house at Hotel Village on the Karoo 1 in the nature of Touwsrivier. What a disappointment when we arrived. The complex looked desolate; a lot of waste in the gardens, overdue maintenance and a swimming pool in the gorge that looked green with algae (and was emptied a day later and filled with fresh water). The houses were missing waste bins, toilet brush, doors that did not close or almost fell off the hinge, a bedside lamp without a socket nearby, some legs of the bed were shortened or broken off, broken chairs and large spider webs under the beds. Moreover, showering also turned out to be not without risk; As soon as one person was in the shower and the other flushed the toilet, only hot water came out of the shower... In short, despite the nice staff, a huge letdown! That's why we left after two days. A shame about our money and also a shame that this type of accommodation can be offered via Booking.com.

We visited for a weekend and absolutely fell in the love with this place. Our kids enjoyed mountain biking and my favorite place is the kloof pool with views to die for. If you love lamb chops, look no further - was really some of the best. Our room had everything we needed. The staff are very friendly and would recommend this to friends. We plan to come back for our 60th birthday with friends.
