Been to this little paradise 5 times and making plans to go again. It the kind of place you keep wanting to go back to, it's addictive !
The rustic tented camp is situated in the shade of huge sycamore fig and other trees, along side the Pongola river. It is rustic, charmingly so, love the showers, roofless, so while having a lovely hot shower after a day on the river, you can do some star gazing!
The hospitality is special and the food is really great ! A coffee/ tea/ juice station is available all day, as well as the best ever crunchies baked by Noktula in her bush kitchen, where she prepares all the delicious meals, for those fortunate to be going with the catered option - my advise, take the catered option!
If you just want to chill, this is the perfect place - relax in one of the hammocks over looking the river. For those who want to be a little more active, there is plenty to do.
Canoeing, fishing, snorkeling, swimming, and BIRDING - this is birding paradise!
We have seen a pels fishing owl and a few fin foot on the river near the camp.
Drift off to sleep to sounds of owls, nightjars and bush babies and awaken early in the morning to the calls of both nocturnal and the too many to mention diurnal birds.
The owner Peter and his manager Garreth and staff really do go the extra mile.
Actually I m not so sure I should be sharing my favourite spot with all of trip advisor - but then they so deserve it !

Paging through the March Getaway magazine, I came across the Pongola River Company ! Not many reviews available on the internet so decided to take chance and try it out...

Ended up being the Best thing ever !!! Wow... A beautiful, peaceful place to camp alongside the Pongola river.
Tented camps available with stretchers, mattresses and bedding, with camping chairs outside each tent.
Hot water showers available where one can look up into the open sky , working/flushing toilets, a fully equipped kitchen and braai facilities.
One can go for self-catering or the fully catered option.

Awesome activities also available such as birding and canoeing (have to do this !!!! It's brilliant !! And Super fun).

Staff are amazing.... Extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating to all our needs.

Truly is an amazing place for friends and even a romantic camping adventure !

I will be back and definitely want to make this a regular-go-back-to !!
Please see my photos with this review.

This had to be the highlight of our trip to S.A. from Canada! Our adventure really began with an awesome journey over the Lebombo mountains by car to meet our guides near Jozini. Great directions had been given and Gareth and Frikie at once made us feel comfortable and reassured. We really enjoy kayaking, bird-watching and adventure but what we 'signed up for' turned out to be much more incredible than we had imagined.

Everything was very well organized. The 'sit-on' kayaks were ready to launch onto the Pongola River below the Pongola Dam. Gareth and Frikie ferried our vehicle and luggage ahead to the camp and that was great because there were no worries about leaving something behind that we might need later. We were guided about 12 km downstream by a charming young Zulu man named Sofiso who has fantastic bird knowledge, and wonderful patience.
After an outstanding afternoon on the water, we arrived at the bush camp. What a surprise! It was much more 'civilized' than we had imagined! Sturdy tents - with tight fitting zippers, hot showers a la fire-heated water tank, private open-to-the-sky latrines and get this - flush toilets! Nice touch! The big dining area was covered so there was shelter if needed, but we had great weather and enjoyed hearing stories around the camp fire at night.
Nokola (sp?), our lovely cook, prepared excellent delicious meals and treats. I do not eat as well at home!
Everyone was friendly. Everyone made us feel comfortable.
Never did we feel rushed...what a great experience!
The trips on the water - an amazing way to see birds and other creatures; I ticked five species of Kingfishers off my list - and even the African Finfoot - thanks to Sofiso!
Along the river we would pass groups of young kids enjoying swimming and playing in the river...all friendly and excited to see us too! (See pic)
For some - this trip might seem a bit out of their comfort level...but that is partly the beauty of this definitely 5 Star adventure!
Thank you to all for sharing this beautiful part of your country in such a unique, relaxing way.

Agreed a meeting point and time at Jozini lodge for us to be taken for the kayaking trip. Gave up waiting for them 1hr 10mins after the agreed time. The manager later claimed they were sat outside the lodge waiting for us. If that IS true then a little initiative to come and see if we were at reception in the lodge would have been a logical step to take. Personally we don't believe that and we were very let down.
We did get our money refunded but no more.

Had a lovely trip down to the Pongola River. Friendly staff who go out of their way and beautiful surroundings in a rustic camp. Birdlife is amazing. Got a few good tiger fish on fly, one of over 4kg. Definitely worth a visit for the traveller who enjoys the camping experience.

My daughter and myself had a wonderful bush experience on the Pongola River. We did some short canoe trips catered to our strength and efforts by the staff. We saw incredible birds and had interesting conversations around the fire with the camp manager. The camp was beautifully cleaned, the showers hot and abundant, the tent private. The ever changing views of the weather, birds and river soothed the soul and relaxed the mind.

If luxury is what you're after, then this is not the place for you. However, if you want a rustic adventure while still retaining the comforts of home, then this is the place for you. The "rooms" are tents with camp cots that overlook the river. There are two flushing toilets as well as an outdoor shower with hot water heated with a wood burning stove.

When we arrived after dark, there was a nice fire burning with comfortable chairs. Then we were taken on a night walk by Sifisa, a local guide who is very knowledgeable. We were able to locate an African Wood Owl and heard Water Thick-knees.

The next day we took two kayak rides down the river to locate the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl. Missed it in the morning (though we did get the Fin Foot!) but Sifisa was able to locate it in the afternoon.

Breakfast was simple, but good with toast, eggs cooked to order, and beans. Can't ask for more than that!

The only complaint I could make is that the road to the camp is very bad and not well marked. We were able to make it in a Toyota Corolla rental car, but just barely. A high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended if you don't want any problems.
