Blue Zebra is simply one of Malawi's most peaceful oases.

From serene sunsets to breathtaking hikes, this island is a true respite easily reached by a short boat ride across Lake Malawi. Whether you are a solo traveler or traveling with family, the island is structured so that you can enjoy seeing birds up-close on various hiking trails and enjoy water activities in the welcoming waves without constantly running into other guests. There's enough room on the island for everyone. It's very clear that the management team is focused on providing a serene atmosphere for all.

Extremely clean and picturesque, there are many places at the Lodge to hide away and exhale. For example, there is an open and covered reading/library area, a sunset/sunrise view outdoor covered lounge, with a small adult soaking pool, a waterfront spa, and more. The team, especially Nasim, Jan, Ken, and the ground team are thoughtful regarding accommodating families in a manner where children can enjoy themselves and still, please couples and solo travelers who are seeking quiet time and privacy. The Blu Zebra team makes it happen in a courteous and welcoming way.

As for the rooms, whether you are in a tent (Note: This is not your average "tent". The tents are more half building/ half tent with more structure than tent. The "tents" have a separate large shower/bathroom, concrete floors, a patio, windows, electrical outlets and are equipped with lights, hot water, and a safe. I was there during a rainstorm, and I didn't even see a drop of rain inside my tent/room.) As for the amazing chalets, they are simply exceptional, especially the "King Fisher" chalet. Overall, all of the lodge's accommodations are all clean, neat, inviting, and well attended.

The food is delightful, and the coffee/tea and snack breaks are thoughtful, and a special complimentary touch during a time where other places no longer welcome complimentary things like, welcome drinks, snacks and free canoeing etc.

As for the food, if you have any qualms, just let the team know ahead of time and they will work with you.

When you consider it all, from start to finish, Blue Zebra's full board package and flexibilities are truly of value for an experience that is relaxing and unforgettable.
From a team that consistently and genuinely is happy to help you, to the beautiful ambience that showcase the best of Nankoma Island, Blue Zebra is my second home on Lake Malawi.

Overall, if you visit Malawi, you must visit Blue Zebra. Cheers!

Our health care team came here for two nights of rest and relaxation and it did not disappoint!! The lodges were amazing and the island is beautiful.
We enjoyed hiking and swimming in the pool - went on a sunset cruise (it was cloudy so not the best of sunsets). We did a snorkel right at the beach at the lodge and the water was a little murky but we saw a few interesting fish. You can do a snorkel excursion to an area where the water is more clear but we did not have time to do that.

We had a big porch on our lodge and sitting out there in the evening looking out at the lake and the fisherman was a special experience.

The food was outstanding and the staff were SO nice! At each meal, you get to pick your choices for the next meal. It was heavenly. Local alcoholic beverages were included in our rate.

For the boat ride over to the lodge, there is not a dock so you need to wade out into the water a little to get to the boat - but the staff were super helpful and they carried all the luggage and everything for us. But would just recommend that you wear clothing that is amenable to doing a little bit of wading.

Blue Zebra Island Lodge was our last stop on a wonderful tour of Southern Malawi from the UK. Having booked our trip in 2019 and had to rebook 4 times because of covid restrictions I had looked at photos on the hotel's website many times over the interim to boost lockdown morale! It actually exceeded my expectations which were very high!
This was the best of Malawian hospitality.

The service from all the staff members was exceptional.
Everyone was really friendly
The food was outstanding with original, imaginative and delicious choices and we enjoyed the cocktails including the special pink caipirinha!

Our tented chalet- Cormorant was well appointed with beautiful views over the lake and a hammerkop nest by the entrance to the decking.
The gardens are beautifully cared for.

We found plenty to occupy us over our 4 night stay.
We loved swimming in both the lake and the pool. The trails around and over the island are well maintained and give great access to nature. We were able to watch a red duiker just ahead of us on one trail and numerous birds and exotic (to us!) plants.
We enjoyed kayaking and snorkeling - both from the beach and on a boat trip which we combined with a sundowner although the best sunsets we experienced were simply from the bar/pool area.

Absolutely beautiful! Thanks to all the team
Highly recommended

The Blue Zebra Lodge is amazing and my friend and I were so impressed with both the service pre-departure and throughout our stay. First, about the place itself. Nestled on an island, the lodges are beautifully decorated and full of charm - the island is very peaceful. You can easily swim, snorkel and kayak. The food was delicious and the sunset lounge divine. Ellah went out of her way to be helpful as one of us missed our flight connection to Lilongwe and Ken was very accommodating as we were intent to make the most of our stay. All staff were lovely. And don't miss out a wonderful massage by Ruth in the massage tent with a view of the lake. This is a very special place and I will definitely return.

My husband and I stayed at Blue Zebra for 2 nights at the beginning of May 2021. It was a relief to escape from the cold weather in Lilongwe to perfect summer weather on the island. We stayed in the Chalet Comodore (a beautifully decorated and clean tented chalet) which had a stunning view of the lake (especially at sunset) and felt very private. We spent a lot of our time relaxing by the pool but also managed to fit in a few walks around the island trails and kayaking trips around the island. The food was amazing - for all the curious vegetarians out there, Blue Zebra has delicious vegetarian options for all meals. The staff at Blue Zebra are amongst the friendliest we've ever met and made top class service seem effortless. We loved our stay and would highly recommend Blue Zebra to anyone looking to escape to Lake Malawi for a relaxing getaway.

The room on the side of the island away from the mainland coast are unbearably hot at night even with the fanS going. Rooms on the other side of the island probably ok. If had one of those rooms, would have given a mediocre rating So be sure to reserve a room on the side of the island facing the mainland. The food is mediocre at best. The staff is delightful and does their best. Interesting hike around the island but trail at points inadequately marked. Do the hike before it gets hot. Nice boat trip around nearby islands. Pleasant pool with chirping colony of weaver birds.

Dear HappyTravelerMoraga, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent stay at Blue Zebra Island Lodge. I’m truly sorry to hear that certain aspects of your visit didn’t meet your expectations. I completely understand how uncomfortable the heat can be at night, especially in the rooms on the side of the island away from the mainland. While we do provide fans, I know they’re not always enough, and I want you to know we’re looking into better solutions to make all our rooms more comfortable for our guests. I’m also sorry to hear that our food didn’t quite hit the mark for you. We always try to provide meals that complement the beauty and uniqueness of our island, and your feedback will help us as we work to improve our menu and offerings. Regarding the hiking trail, thank you for pointing out the need for better signage. I’ll make sure this is addressed right away so future guests can enjoy exploring the island without any confusion. The hiking trail after all is one of the best ways to explore our magical island. It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the boat trip, the pool (and its cheerful weaver birds!), and our lovely staff. They work so hard to make each guest’s stay special, and I’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to the team. We’re grateful for your honest feedback—it’s comments like yours that help us grow and improve. I hope we’ll have the chance to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience.

We are happy to have spent the weekend at Blue Zebra 🐠 island in Lake Malawi 🇲🇼.

It was an enchanting experience and all three of our family members had a wonderful quality family time.

We had an exclusive cottage for three of us, it's discreet, tucked in the midst of the rocks and the lake and the nearest second cottage was nearly 100 meters away, ensuring absolute privacy.

The food was awesome, thanks to the chef for treating us different international cuisine for every lunch and dinner.

The 3 days 2 nights flew just like that, with early morning treks to the hill top, followed by swimming, kayaking and relaxing at the bar.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The boat ride from the mainland to the island is smooth and comfortable.

In short , we had a splendid family time and experience.

We think that Blue Zebra Island Lodge is a 'must visit' in Malawi. Either before you start your safari or hiking tour of the country, or after, Blue Zebra provides the perfect island retreat for r&r. Excellent accommodation, welcome, service and cuisine puts Blue Zebra above the other island retreats we visited and sets it apart with its 'understated luxury'. We stayed in a beautiful two double-bedroom cottage overlooking Lake Malawi and there are other cottage and luxury tented alternatives. The only minor thing that could have been better is a set of flippers in my size, for snorkelling around the islands! At only 90mins from Lilongwe airport its a perfect start or signature to your holiday - we loved it.

I had an incredible stay at Blue Zebra and this began with the most amazing customer service from Jen who organised and managed to get me booked in last minute while taking j to consideration all of my dietary requirements, which can be a difficult thing in Malawi with various resorts. I was welcomed personally and was given a full itenary of what I could do and access while on the island, I was constantly given great service form all of the staff on the island. The water sports staff were very caring and responsible, the restaurant staff with the exquisite food served at dinner, lunch and breakfast.

The accommodation was comfy and kept me in touch with nature and soothing sounds of Lake Malawi which resulted in a well needed restfull retreat. Beautiful nature trail and birding by Adamson and wonderful views Kayaking which are included. Boat transfer back included in price which allows you to capture the wonderful sunset. Looking Looking forward to my next visit.

Thankyou Jen and the team!
