The rooms are well styled like something from East London. The rooms have a window from the bathroom to the main room, not my cup of tea so a blind of sorts would be useful. Load shedding is an issue in SA and they whatsapp you to advise. The issue we had was in the evening it meant no wifi or tv which is a pain. The rooms are among a shared working space the toilets had audiobooks playing. There was a strange smell, not sure of tbe cause myself but didnt seem to be flooding Its close to the V&A and some shops but the homeless camp to the front isnt the nicest but what can they do as not their land. I would happily stay again though mind your head on the low light in room 7
I was fortunate in that I was the first paying customer at this very impressive Hotel. I travel extensively for business within SA so thought I had seen it all! The Old Foundry Hotel is definitely everything that a traveller could hope for... and more. I was allocated a "Bijou" room which was as luxurious as one would expect from a Hotel of this standard. Add to that all the other business options they offer and you have a real home/office away from home.
Avoid at all costs. The carpets are literally soaked in feces and excrement. The heavy smells everywhere are to mask the awful stench when the showers and toilets overflow during load shedding. We requested our money back twice and the hotel refused and told us to contact booking.com
The Old Foundry is a stylish hotel that seems to have been decorated for Millennials who enjoy vintage furnishings. It is a mere 10 minute casual walk to the Waterfront and about 30 minutes to the town center; the location is fantastic. The beds and pillows are comfortable, the hotel restaurant serves excellent breakfast in a beautiful, serene courtyard, and the front desk makes an awesome Gin and Tonic as a welcome drink! Now for some tips that I hope will be helpful. 1) The location. As great as it is from sights, the front faces a small homeless encampment. We never had any issues, but this does make for an uncomfortable first impression. Not surprisingly, the front entrance is locked after 7:00PM. No worries. Continue on Ebeneezer to the end of the block and make a left onto Prestwich. You will find a second entrance, which gets locked after around 9:00 PM. Again, no worries. Travel a few feet to the end of the block and make a left onto Cardiff. You will find a third entrance into the Foundry that is open all day and night. 2) Load shedding. That happens in South Africa, and when it does, it only lasts for 2 about hours. When it happens during the day, you will be told at what time. Plan your day accordingly. 3) The hotel room we were in had very limited storage. The sink floats (I had to be creative with where to store toiletries), the towel hook is really, really high (I had to jump), and the closet space is tiny. If none of this bothers you, then this will be a great place for you. For me, I will definitely return.…
I'll start off by saying what many have, the rooms are stunning. See my pictures. Location is great as well. A few things need some work though. Website booking didn't work, so I booked over email. I paid a supplement of 200 rand per night for breakfast, yet when I go to the cafe attached to the hotel, I'm told you only get a 100 rand credit. So, DO NOT book breakfast, just pay directly at the cafe. As others have said, no generator, so when the power goes during load shedding there is no electricity and you can't use the water. Then a few other small things, like no espresso pods in the rooms even though there is a machine. No channels/nothing to watch on the massive TV, you need to use accounts of your own.
