Tuynhuys is in the heart of the business district in Cape Town - very quiet over the course of the weekend (except during the evenings) and busy during the weekdays. The location is great and within walking distance of local supermarkets, and the abundance of restaurants and bars on Bree, Long and Kloof Street.

Be aware that being in this central location also means that you’ll hear the nightlife well in to the early hours. I was expecting this over the weekend, but surprised that it went on until 3am most weekdays too.

There is one space of underground parking available for each apartment, and the fob security system for accessing the building/car park is very good. There is also a 24 hr security guard at the front desk - who also helps with check in/check out and general queries.

Whilst these are serviced apartments, I was disappointed that the first thing I did when I arrived was vacuum! I like to walk around with bare feet and the floor clearly had not been cleaned. Aside from this niggle, the apartment really is lovely - very chic and modern. The rooms are a good size and the bathrooms were clean and inviting.

The balcony almost spans the entirety of the apartment and our 8th floor space gave us great views of Table Mountain, Lions Head and Signal Hill, as well as Long Street on the opposite side.

Very happy overall with these luxury apartment suites.

We stayed for a one night stay at the Tuynhuis apartments over the public holiday weekend and everything was perfect from check in till we departed. Joshua and the team gave us brilliant service and would recommend the apartments to anyone. Stylish and luxurious inside & we got spoiled with a lovely anniversary treat and romantic turndown which was very special. Joshua is a star and gives great service.
Thank you Team home from home. We will definitely return.

Great location. Easy to walk to everything in the CBD and beyond. A lot of cafes are located close by.
Modern feel with updated furnishings.
Fantastic shower.
Good wifi.
Easy to find.
Fairly bright from the windows during the day and has nice blackout curtains at night.

Not a lot of written instructions (locations of bins, how the A/C works, etc).
The entire floor smelled strongly of weed. You could get a contact high just standing in the hallway.
The flat is quite small. It's a good size for a couple of nights or a single person, but after that, it can feel claustrophobic.
The host wasn't the best at communicating and answering questions.

Overall, I had an excellent stay at my accommodation! I stayed 3 nights in total at Tunyhuys in a single studio apartment. Below is a detailed review of my stay.

Location: the Tunyhuys apartment complex is situated in the heart of Cape Town's central business district. There is no shortage of shops, restaurants, convenience stores, clothing, cafes in the direct vicinity of the hotel. All reachable in a 5-10 minute walk. There is a coffee shop directly across the street. There are major supermarkets scattered around the CBD (Woolworths, Shop Rite, Pick n Pay, Spar), approximately 700-1000 metres from the apartment complex. You will find everything you could possibly need within stone's throw of the hotel. I walked everywhere in Cape Town, since it is a pedestrian friendly city. You can reach V&A Waterfront by foot in approximately 20-30 minutes depending on your pace. Also, I recommend an excellent steak house called Cattle Baron - located about halfway between the waterfront and the hotel. On Tuesdays, all steaks are 20% off.

Security: the apartment complex is located just down the street from the High Courts, so there was a constant police presence outside of the hotel complex. Entry of vehicles is restricted and monitored at all times. The apartment complex itself has 24 hour concierge and the front door entrance is accessible only to tenants, owners and short term renters with fob access. I felt safe in Cape Town, even walking alone at night as a lone female. I particularly felt safe in and around the area of my hotel.

Apartment: my apartment was located on the 5th floor, accessible by both lift and stairs. My booking was for a one bedroom studio apartment and it was exactly as described. All of the included amenities were there as promised including a few extra, unexpected amenities at which I was pleasantly surprised! The layout of the apartment is open concept, meaning the bedroom, living room area and kitchen are in the same room, and the bathroom is in a separate enclosed room. The layout was smart, functional and the decor and overhead lighting were really beautiful. There were mirrors and artwork throughout the room, which added to the overall aesthetic of the apartment. I didn't have a particularly nice view from my room, but I was not at all bothered since it was just a place to sleep and collect myself. I felt really at home during my stay, which made all the difference as I have been traveling for some months, with many more months of travel to go. It was nice to call a place my own for a short while.

Living room area: my apartment had a large cushioned couch, two large chairs, a large glass coffee table, a rug and a large tv stand with a flatscreen tv. It was a smart tv, meaning you could link to your streaming devices. There were no local channels available, only the ability to link to online streaming (Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon etc.). If you're like me, and you'd cancelled all of your entertainment subscriptions while traveling, you had the option of watching free content on YouTube. I was able to find BBC documentaries and murder mysteries - my favourite - and these kept me well entertained for 3 nights! I was able to watch tv from my bed, which made it all the more cozy!

Bedroom: my apartment came with a large and high double bed, which was oh so comfortable! The mattress was the perfect combination of soft and firm, and the 4 pillows were the perfect firmness. The bedding felt crisp, fresh and brand new. There was an extra pillow for decor as well as an extra blanket on the bed. I had really lovely sleeps in that bed! There were two bedside tables with a lamp on either side of the bed, as well as a bedside socket to charge your phone. There were two milk chocolate squares waiting for me on the bed, which I felt was a nice touch/gesture. The chocolate was delicious! There was also a large standing fan beside the bed.

Kitchen/dining area: the dining area had a round glass table with 4 chairs around it. There was a long side table against the wall also, with decorative pieces. It was nice and functional! The kitchen was small but functional. It had most everything I needed to cook evening meals, make breakfast, and enjoy morning coffee. The kitchen had a two burner countertop, a microwave, an oven, a small mini fridge and a Whirlpool front loading washing machine. The kitchen was equipped with most everything you needed to make meals: a large cooking pot, fry pan, strainer, cutting boards, knives, wooden spoons, slotted spoons, spatulas, a can opener, flatware, dishware, coffee mugs, glasses, wine glasses, a water jug, a glass press/percolator to make morning coffee, a full tea set on a platter, a canister of coffee, tea bags, sugar, salt, pepper. Dish soap, cloths, sponges and a drying rack were also provided. There was also an electric kettle, a toaster, hand towels and paper towels. The fridge was a bit on the smaller side for food storage, but for one person it was sufficient. There was a small little icebox in the top, but I wouldn't count on it to keep your frozen foods completely frozen. There were some unexpected extras included like a small box of milk, a large bottle of water and 3 little cookies to sample (also delicious), which were a nice touch! Having a washing machine was genius and I took full advantage of getting my clothes clean. There was a small container of washing powder provided, but I bought a package for a couple of dollars. The kitchen sink was in a very awkward position - tucked away in the far corner - which made washing dishes an awkward reach, but I made do! This isn't the fault of the host - the kitchen design I think was limited by size. There was ample counter space to prepare meals - two long counters available.

Bathroom: the bathroom was lovely! Felt very modern and new, though small. There is a locked door on the bathroom should you wish for privacy. The shower was amazing - large and spacious walk in design, with brand new tilling and a spotless glass door. The water temperature and pressure was excellent and there was a large overhead rain shower head. The bathroom came with the usual expected amenities - 2 large bath towels, a hand towel, a floor mat - and many unexpected but appreciated amenities such as shampoo, body/shower gel, hand lotion and liquid hand soap. There was ample toilet paper provided for my stay. The toilet (large and modern) was in a rather awkward spot, sitting behind the sink in a little alcove. It wasn't a major issue, but it made accessing the toilet a bit of a tighter squeeze. Ample lighting and mirrors also in the bathroom, as well as a ledge to store your toiletries.

In the main hallway there was a large cabinet with the cleaning supplies (broom, mop) and other appliances/storage capabilities including: a fan, an electronic safe, a space heater, a folding luggage rack, a hair dryer, an ironing board and iron, and a dozen or so hangers to hang your clothing on to dry.

Communication: the host was just a pleasure and lovely to communicate with. Professional, friendly and incredibly responsive throughout my stay and in the lead up to my stay. The host provided an email/WhatsApp message with all essential information (step by step procedures) for checkin, making checkin efficient and seamless. Excellent process, and overall exceptional communication from the host. The host also proved a phone number to contact should there be any issues. Just an absolutely pleasure to correspond with, and clearly puts effort into making guests' stays as comfortable as possible!

Electricity/wifi: I did not experience load shedding once during my stay here. The electricity was a constant and I had absolutely no issues. The wifi was secure, password protected and the signal was incredibly strong throughout the apartment. I really appreciated being able to have strong connectivity to catch up on emails, banking and, of course, to watch my murder mysteries!

Note: the apartment I was in was not serviced, but I absolutely had no expectation it would be during my stay, and preferred it wasn't, so I could leave my belongings scattered around as I would do at home. Maybe there are other apartments that provide this service, but I really don't feel it's necessary.

Overall: I had a superb stay here! It really was truly nice for me to experience the comforts of home in Cape Town while I ready myself for many more months of travel in Africa. I would not hesitate to stay here again should I find myself in Cape Town, and I highly recommend this apartment complex to my fellow travellers. Thank you very much to the host for all of the unexpected gestures that made my stay here exceptional! For me, it felt like a home away from home, at least for 3 nights!
