We booked 2 rooms in Cartel House Hotel & there were issues with both. The apartment is an afterthought with the fire escape & a dumb waiter to the kitchen both in the room. There is no lock on the door, just a code which isn’t changed after the previous guest so you can’t lock the door at all. The safe wouldn’t work and despite me reporting it to reception it was never fixed. The TVs in neither room worked, again reported it but wasn’t fixed. The plumbing in one room was faulty so there was an electric diffuser constantly running to hide the smell. The air con in the apartment only partly worked so it was very warm. The apartment is also very loud due to it being next to the lift shaft. One of the days after the room was cleaned, there was a mysterious yellow liquid in the sink (urine??) There is a bar/lounge advertised, there isn’t one! The night porter will get you a beer which you can take to your room but no wine/spirits. The only positives were the staff were friendly & the decor nice.

The overall stay was extremely disappointing and I cannot recommend this hotel. We stayed for one night at the beginning of January 2023. The waterfront hotels were fully booked, so I decided to try something different. As I like industrial design, I decided to try this hotel in town and to support local. I booked the Apartment as it appeared spacious and had a sliding door that I liked as we could have fresh air in the room. It started off bad with check-in. The front desk klerk hardly greeted us and no usual welcome was offered together with information on the hotel. I confirmed ahead of time that parking was available, hence enquired where to park. The klerk indicated the entrance next to the building. Upon parking we roamed the basement looking for the lift entrance. Eventually we found none and had te lug our luggage up the ramp to the street and back to the entrance. The klerk could have informed us that there was no access from the basement. We were then escorted to the lift and up to the room. The room had no key, only a keypad with a very (not) secure code 1234. The room appeared as depicted in the photos. The bed, however, is only queen size. The klerk indicated that if we needed anything, I had to use the Whatsapp number that I was added to. I indicated that I had not received any Whatsapp link, so he said that the link would then be shared. It was shared shortly thereafter. Upon leaving the hotel I Whatsapped and requested bottled water and fresh milk. The water was supplied, I was informed that there is fresh milk in the fridge. Issues we had with the room: 1. The room is next to the lift and shares a common wall with the lift shaft. Every time the lift operates one can hear the drone of the lift in the room. This carries on at all hours of the day and night, therefore one cannot sleep due to the noise! 2. The door to the room is an emergency escape and does not seal. One can therefore hear all guests walking past the door and standing talking at the lift, which is just outside the door. There is also a gap under the door, hence there is a drag of wind constantly flowing through the room. 3. The room has two airconditioners, only one worked. 4. Upon return the evening we wanted to watch television but there was no signal. I Whatsapped the klerk who came up in 5 min and proceeded to change some hardware. The television only had Netflix and YouTube. Note the loose wiring all around the TV - not as depicted in the photos. 5. The overflow outlet of the bath is a DIY item, hence when I bathed the bathroom floor was wet due to the water leaking onto the floor. 6. The door to the bathroom does not latch and therefore does not close. 7. After returning the evening, running water was heard from above the bathroom and audible for two hours even from the bed in the room. When I Whatsapped regarding this issue, I was informed that there are offices on the floor above and that they would investigate. The water noise did stop eventually. 8. I hoped to sleep with the door open for fresh air, however, there is a sort of gambling club across the road that was extremely noisy throughout the night. So I had to close the door to try and sleep. 9. The next morning when I made coffee, when wanting to have fresh milk from the fridge, the milk turned out to be sour. Not having slept much I checked out early. Upon arriving at the check-out desk no-one was to be found. I ordered coffee from the cafe adjacent and as I was about to leave and just drop the key, a klerk appeared. I had to ask to pay for the water. No greeting was offered. Overall the stay was extremely poor! The hotel has serious issues and I believe the Apartment is not suited as a room. My concern is that in the event of a fire, how the guests from other rooms on the floor accesses the fire escape that is accessible from inside the Apartment. I support local, but sadly do not recommend this hotel.

Stayed one long night here. When the three of us we went out for a late dinner, the night clerk, who appeared a little under the influence, told us to be careful walking the two blocks to the restaurant. He let us out through the locked door. We had dinner and returned to Cartel House, passing some slightly scary characters populating the streets. Of course, both the revolving door and the adjacent man door were locked. We knocked on the door...and knocked...and knocked. There was no response after 20 minutes of knocking. We approached a police van near the hotel, which was on the street to keep an eye on the nightlife on Loop. The police called Gary from CCID (a public-private security service) who came to our aid and who eventually got in contact with offsite hotel staff. They told us, "Don't worry, the clerk should be there soon". Someone else was called who suggested we get a cab to a sister property across town...to wait there, not to stay. Fed up with the lack of help, we, along with a police officer and Gary from CCID, managed to move the revolving door so the skinniest of us could slip into the hotel. When the man door was opened to allow the rest of us to enter, a blaring alarm sounded. Still no night clerk. We got to our room after midnight, two hours after reaching the hotel post-dinner. The hotel's excuse was that the clerk was dealing with a leak on the 6th floor. So let me get this straight: the clerk, who expressed concern for our safety on our way out, was not concerned enough to check to see if the threesome he had let out for dinner were waiting to get back into the hotel. I suspect there was no leak, and the doorman was off somewhere dealing with his own issues (See a previous review titled: "The receptionist was drunk"). Cape Town is a beautiful city, but is the 10th most dangerous city in the world. The Cartel House left us outside on Loop Street for two hours, then we had to find our own way in. Unacceptable. Be warned.

Myself & my husband booked for the weekend for our 18th Wedding Anniversary. There was a teeny weeny communication mishap but within seconds Caren & her staff had sorted it out, they went above and beyond for us, in fact without hesitation & with a smile on their faces we were actually upgraded, which was a very pleasant surprise for us. Our room was absolutely stunning & very comfortable and it had all the amenities that we needed. The staff were exceptionally friendly & helpful & the service we received from them was just fantastic, especially if I compare them to other & bigger hotels that we have previously stayed in. Anything we needed we just had to ask. Its a unique & quaint hotel with a twist which we just loved. Well done Team Cartel, we will most definitely be back! Bianca & Paul Kemp

Loved the decor, the layout of the room optimised the space very well, the staff was beyond helpful and friendly and instantly felt like I was at my second home. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom and room were clean and the floor was quiet

I don't have a problem with the hotel, it's a very nice hotel. But we had a very bad experience during our check-in. The guy at the reception was passed out and it took a while for him to wake up and let us in. He was completely drunk and didn't know what he was doing. He wasn't even able to take us to the right floor and then he tried opening the wrong room. It just didn't make us feel safe. It's also impossible to reach the hotel, we tried calling so many times and there was no answer. The food was very good. Customer service is a 0/5.

I have stayed in the largest (6) and smallest (1) rooms and I enjoyed both equally. I can truly say that comfort and luxury is not dependent on size. Ideas Cartel never disappoints, especially with their attention to detail. The room service from Brunch CT is excellent. A late night snack ordered from Uber eats was super convenient. Many restaurants are available within close proximity. We, however, chose to visit Misfits CT and we were so glad we did. Do yourself a favour and get in a cab for the short 5min drive, traffic dependent. We shall be back soon to try rooms number 3, 4 and 5 which we believe each have their own character. Thank you, Karen, for these suggestions and your excellent hospitality. Well done to the owners for their excellent vision in a busy city centre.

The room is very spacious and well fitted. Good view of the city. Central to Cape town city, and within walking distance from bus stops. Room service, Restaurant menu and communication are all on Whatsapp. Found it very comfortable and up to date. The room was ready @ 14H00 when we checked in, it was in very good condition, very clean. Don't leave your keys at the front desk or security, you are practically telling the world you are not in your room. Never ever in 30 years of travel, I left a key at reception. My own security rules served me well up till now.

Very disappointed. We arrived and there was no one to check us in. We had to sit and wait and eventually the security guard assisted. Arranged for early breakfast only to arrive at the breakfast area still closed. Reception had to phone and they said they will be down in a minute. Waited until they finally arrived just to find out that nothing was prepared and everything still had to be made. Could not access the sky lounge or any other area which supposedly was part of the experience had to go down to reception and ask every time for them to give access to the sky lounge. Really really disappointed I really expected much better.

Huge security issues! The security guard gave out my friends' room keys to a stranger and all their valuables were stolen from the room. I witnessed a conversation with the hotel management where they didn't apologize or take responsibility for the incident.
