I was traveling with two others by car from the airport. Clive was our host and was an incredible source of information. River Lodge is similar to a B&B in the States, but without breakfast. My room was great and included a small kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, cooking appliances, plates, etc. Everything needed to avoid eating out, if that is your preference. He has a very nicely landscaped lawn that includes a salt water pool and a nice "babbling brook". A nice trail behind his home leads to the upper scale Alphen hotel, where you can have a very nice breakfast.

In addition, Clive has a bird feeder that provides meals for a frequent male whydah bird that is worth several photos. In his lavender bed, you'll likely see his family of Dwarf Cape Town Chameleons.

Shopping is within an easy drive as is Kirstenboch Gardens. We visited this garden in early spring (Feb) and thus many of the plants were dormant and not in flower, but still worth a visit. Groot Constantia Wine Estate is also an easy drive. Chardonnay Deli is adjacent to Groot Constantia and is a definite breakfast stop.

All-in-all, Clive's River Lodge is a great place to use as a "base camp". Highly recommend it.
