We have often driven along Ocean Drive and never paid any attention to the wooden door at no.75. But what a surprise when it swung open and we were welcomed by a beautifully designed garden that interacted with wild organic patches making you forget the busy road you came on. Hibiscus and orchids reflect the special flora of this part of the world.

No concrete steps accompanied us to the tiny reception area but the natural beauty of wooden slats gave us a secure foothold on the way down. It is situated next to a Cafe styled Bar area that allows you to relax again surrounded by Nature at its best. An ideal spot for an increase of your vitamin D.

3 steps further and your eyes open onto a vista of the sea stretching uninterrupted to the horizon.

This panorama begins from a beautifully tailored lounge that one just wants to relax in, feasting on the ever changing view of waves washing against the rocks below with a constantly changing theatre of spray . Needless to say, there is access to a very secluded beach area topped with a rocky outcrop that after climbing it, invites you to sty seated on the bench provided and just inhale the purity of the air.

If the weather turns, you will be shielded by concertina sliding doors and on the rare occasion of a Winter Day in this part of the world, a fire place will entice you to linger over a glass of red wine. Even in summer, the fire pit is awesome.

One can also enjoy the magnificent view from the breakfast Terrace - greeted by the sun in the morning - that can double up as a dinning room at night.

The secluded upstairs first floor lets you choose from a elegantly but modern furnished bed rooms that even travelers from Europe will call 5+ stars.

Setting such a high standard is obviously a challenge for the brigade in the kitchen but one is in very safe hands. During our 3 day stay we were treated to a multitude of taste combinations with some unknown ingredients that would satisfy any pallet and although the wine cellar is relative small if offers and excellent array of top South African wine estates.

Being surrounded by such splendor there has to be a spa that has to round of everything and we were not disappointed by the special treatment and relaxed afterwards admiring the little Zen garden.

The whole team spoilt us in their attention to details and always with a welcoming smile. One simply does not want to leave.

Doing Sala justice is hard. My wife and I stayed there for a week while on honeymoon. It was ... amazing and blissful. We are very happy to recommend it. The location is special - if not simply spectacular: amazing views, close to the pool/restaurant spaces - overlooking the ocean. The staff are some of the most welcoming and relaxedly-professional I have encountered in SA (from the gardeners to the spa therapists to the front of house team). Food is a delight: varying, interesting always delicious. The boutique hotel has 7 rooms in the main space and a "villa" on an adjoining property with 3 rooms. The outcome is something very intimate. Lastly: my wife and I didn't leave the property for the week we were there, apart from walks on the beach. A fantastic "cocoon".

Sala is something special and very much worth experiencing.

Firstly this was a luxurious hotel with amazing sea views. We saw dolphins swimming past a couple of times which was very special. Bedroom was a really good size and had bifold doors on to the private patio. Very clean and modern.

We had hoped to walk to other nice restaurants and local shops during our stay, but it wasn’t that type of neighbourhood. The food wasn’t to my taste and I would have liked more lighter options.

The staff were excellent and very attentive always making sure everything was ok. We had an issue with our food taking ages to be served one night and they gave us the meal for free which helped how we felt about it.

Would give 5 stars if the location leading in to the hotel was better so you didn’t feel constrained to the hotel, and if more lighter food choices were available.

Well what can I say. What an incredible stay we had. We were lucky enough to have sole use of the three bedroom villa which was decorated impeccably by the owners.
In fact the whole hotel blew us away as soon as we walked in. It felt instantly relaxing and homely.
The photos on the website do not do this place justice it really is stunning. The staff were amazing where nothing is too much trouble. There is no menu but the chef comes to the table and asks what you would like and they make it happen. The public/sharing areas in the hotel are also stunning with incredible views of the ocean where you can do a bit of Whale and Dolphin watching whilst eating your breakfast or having a cocktail.
There is direct access to the beach via 30ish steps leading down to the waterfront. Great to have an explore down there in the rock pools and the walled swimming sea water pool, maybe a swim if you're brave enough!!.
Should you need any laundry or ironing doing this is always very quick and no hassle.
Sven, the manager was great and helped us with our plans. So do ask for help if you need it.
I didn't go to the Spa but my friends I travelled with did and they said it was exceptional. I did have a sneaky peak around and it looked fabulous. Next time I will definitely book in for a massage.
Can't wait to visit again and would highly recommend staying there if your in the Durban area. They also offer a duel holiday experience with Rhino River Lodge safari which I would highly recommend also.

We went to Sala for our wedding anniversary and absolutely loved every moment in this beautiful space! The food was exceptionally good and completely delicious. The staff are so kind and friendly and helpful in the most delightful ways - they brought us binoculars to better view the Whales and Dolphins and even kept guard to protect our food from the pesky monkey that was nearby while we enjoyed out yummy breakfast on the scenic deck! The ambience of Sala is magical and at night we loved the fire in the garden and inside the lounge area where we had our dinner. It is a super special place for sure.

What a beautiful location. Staff are very helpful, they go above the normal. Place is beautiful and clean. Special touches such as a jar of nuts, and jar of jelly beans. Meals were delicious. Staff are happy to set up your very own gazebo down on the beach, feel like royalty.

Dont let the gate fool no the winding path to reception.. it is all to prepare you for the dramatic view they have managed to carve. A warm welcoming staff graciously takes you to your rooms, after of course a little light libation because your throat is still dry from your open mouth when you see that view, The rooms are spacious, well appointed, they have covered every amenity you can think of. It really is a cocoon and you wouldnt want to leave the place.

We had the most incredible stay at Sala Beach House. My husband and I stayed in the Ocean suite and we were able to watch dolphins swim up the coast from our beds. We were travelling with our 3 teenage sons and they stayed in the adjoining pool view rooms downstairs which were perfect for them. The views from this family run boutique hotel were so spectacular they literally took our breath away and almost brought us to tears. Amazing service, delicious food (the eggs benedict with bacon was delicious!). The pool looked very inviting but we opted for the beach instead with direct stair access straight into the sand. Charlie's tidal pool is great for families at Thompson's Bay and the walk through the hole in the wall is great. Can't wait to return -although next time we want to try the villa. Thank you to Craig and Gert for creating this absolute gem on the KZN coastline. Your personal touches make all the difference.

I recently stayed at Sala Beach House for 2 nights and what a spoil. From the moment you arrive to the moment you depart the staff make you feel super special. With uninterrupted views of the ocean from the bedrooms and the swimming pool, if you want to stay on the beach in Balltio then this is the boutique hotel you must choose.
I also loved the bespoke luxury decor.
