Comfortable room with air conditioning. Had a problem with a broken shower head, so was moved to another room. The staff were helpful. Meals were good and the beers were cold. We were the only people in the bar, so we had a very attentive barman, who even brought us drinks in the restaurant.

I stayed at the Chikho Hotel for almost two weeks for a work trip. I hadn't been to Kasungu before and didn't know what to expect in terms of the standard of accommodation. However, I was very pleased with my stay at the Chikho Hotel.

The rooms were really lovely and everyone I was travelling with agreed that the beds were incredibly comfortable. The mosquito net around my bed was in like-new condition, but I didn't have to worry much. In two weeks I think I heard a mosquito buzzing once or twice. My room was generally bug-free. The rooms also have a mini-fridge, but mine wasn't working. I could've checked with reception about fixing it but didn't need it.

The bathroom was also very large with a stand-up shower and a separate tub and hand-held shower. The hot water gets turned off in the evening, but it's my understanding that if you call reception they can turn it back on for you. I didn't try this, but always had hot water in the mornings.

The room was cleaned daily, as long as I left my key at the front desk before leaving for the day. I don't know if they have spare keys at all, so make sure not to lose yours.

There is a restaurant and bar on site. The restaurant serves three daily buffets, which are all fairly standard but good. If you're ordering a la carte, be aware that some items will be available while you're there and others won't. If you get the chance, a short drive away is a restaurant called "Mouth of Heaven" (something like that). It's tucked behind a storefront and I would've missed it entirely had it not been for the help of some local friends. It's delicious, but make sure to arrive mid-day, place your order and make your reservation for that evening. But I digress...

There is a bar located at the hotel, but you have to go out the front door and to the far right side of the hotel to enter it. You can't actually order alcohol in the restaurant, but you can grab something in the bar and bring it into the restaurant yourself. Not sure why this is the case. The bar has a couple comfy chairs and high boy tables. It's never very busy and a nice place to work and relax.

Overall, the service at the Chikho Hotel is good, but I do think that in Malawi in general, customer service is a fairly new industry. You sort of have to take matters into your own hands - ask for what you want, don't expect it to be offered. But everyone was friendly and most spoke English well, so be patient and you'll enjoy your stay. And the laundry was great! It wasn't advertised, but I left mine at the front desk one morning and it was in my room by the end of the day and in excellent, fresh condition.

The hotel does have a pool but I didn't try it out. It wasn't very warm. By the end of the week it looked like it needed a good cleaning. It's in the courtyard of the hotel within view of the restaurant, so it's convenient. There isn't a proper sitting area though. In fact, the grounds could be enhanced a bit with some extra outdoor seating, as the lawn is manicured and there's some space that feels a bit empty but could be quite pretty.

The only warning (and this is an issue in rural areas in Africa generally too), is that power can be off and on. There's a generator, but a couple times it seemed like the generator was off when the power went off so nothing worked. This usually started around noon and continued into the night. It never hindered me from accomplishing things for long, but could be a nuisance. The power was more reliable in the morning. Make sure to charge your devices so you're ready in case you can't later in the day. And of course, when the power goes out, the internet goes out too. You purchase wi-fi passes at the front desk. The connection isn't bad. You can send emails, but you can't watch Netflix - it's somewhere in between.

The thing that I did find inconvenient is that the hotel says it takes credit cards, but does not (or did not whilst I was there). This is another general inconvenience in Malawi, particularly at hotels where bills can grow after two weeks, and paying in cash is annoying. There are a number of banks nearby, but you can only take out 40,000 kwacha at a time, and you can only take out 120,000 kwacha over the course of a day. You can easily get by at the hotel on 5,000 kwacha/day for food. Try to do the math in advance and have cash at your disposal.

Overall, my stay at the Chikho Hotel was really pleasant. I wouldn't rate this hotel "very good" by North American standards, but I was told upon arrival at the airport that it was the, "nicest hotel in Kasungu," and I'm sure that's the case. I felt really safe and secure the whole time too. I hope to visit Kasungu again and would definitely stay at the Chikho Hotel in the future.

Chiko
Chiko Hotel is located in Kasungu just over an hour’s drive from the capital Lilongwe. It is set in attractive grounds a short drive from the town centre so you would need transport if using it as a base to explore the area. This is one of the smaller conference facilities that I have used in Malawi and its size offers a number of advantages. These include shorter distances between guest rooms and the public areas, smaller queues at mealtimes and overall a quieter calmer atmosphere. There were a few electrical outages during the week but these were of short duration and did not impact on the workshop. There are ramps to most rooms on the ground floor offering access to those with mobility difficulties.
The guest rooms were spacious and clean with tiled floors and bathrooms although finish and décor were basic.. A kettle and cups were provided in the rooms but no hairdryer or iron. The water supply was reliable and a reasonable temperature. Although there was a mosquito net it was not in good condition so I would advise bringing a plug-in mosquito repellent.
The real selling point for this facility was the support provided by the staff at all levels. They acted on requests and responded to issues very quickly. For example, on arrival we explained the room lay out required and when we arrive on the first morning everything in the room, including audio visual and audio equipment was exactly as we wanted.
I would be happy to use this hotel for leisure purposes if I wanted somewhere to stay for a few days while exploring the country.

I stayed two nights in Kasungu Chikho Hotel for a business trip.
The Hotel staff welcomed us warmly and friendly and remained so throughout the visit.
That was the highlight.

It is painful to be critical towards an emerging tourism industry in a small country with its own struggles and challenges. At the same time I think , if there is no critical comment, how could there be any change for the better!

To start with, the management had a special price for foreigners. (At least all locals who we asked, were shocked to hear what we were actually paying: 95 US$ per night with breakfast.) In that part of the world, 95 per night should render you a good three star or even a four start hotel. The Chikho was far from it.
A list of observations
- Power cuts (that's fine, regular, but a hotel that category should not restrict generator hours
- Water Cuts (this is unacceptable, Malawi is not arid or semiarid,, but tropical, water is not an issue, a hotel that size should have tanks)
- no shower gel, no shampoo in the BR, only one towel (while it may sound luxurious what I am missing, still it is standard in a hotel that price class)
- mosquito net not properly closing
- while the food was OK, not refined, but very good local standard, the waiting time seemed endless
- internet for extra money did not work

Water pressure was very low, making shower impossible, but that was the only problem. Everything else was great. Unlike many hotels in Malawi, restaurant was open all day from 6 am to 10 pm.

All staff spoke clear English and were very friendly..

Hotel is a favorite for conferences and international guests. Pool is clean and inviting.

I've been staying in Chikho Kasungu for 4 weeks. The rooms view wasn't particularly great, but the rooms are comfortable and equipped with everything you need; bed including mosquito net, bathroom with warm water, fridge, air conditioner, closet, table. The free Wi-Fi works well as long as there's power.

Some things that are advertised are not available in the hotel: there is no safe in the room, the pool has been gone for some time, there is no gym or billiards, and the rooms are definitely not soundproof. Besides, the menu in the restaurant has way more options than is actually ever available. Even when indicating in the morning our preference for dinner in the evening, they could not deliver what we wanted. Also, a waiting time of an hour or more is common, so it's better to order in advance.

The amount of food we received every morning with the breakfast included in the room fare is great. Every morning we were welcomed by an extensive buffet. If just a few guests were staying, there would be no buffet, but we could order an egg in any way we wanted. We would then receive a full plate with potatoes, vegetables, 2 sausages (though always still red on the inside, even after repeatedly telling the staff to cook it longer), chicken, and multiple eggs prepared how we ordered. Usually it was more than enough to have food for lunch as well, as we could keep the plates wrapped in plastic in our fridge for the kitchen staff to warm up for us at another time.

The hygiene of the hotel is good, as the corridors are cleaned daily and the rooms as well if you leave your key at the reception. There is barely any insects in the room, unless you leave your windows open for too long. But the mosquito nets around the bed work fine.

Overall, compared to the standard in The Netherlands, Chikho Hotel would not be 'very good', but for Malawi/Kasungu standard it really it. I enjoyed my stay here, the staff was nice and everthing is in good condition.

Rooms have been refurbished and are in good condition. But the kitchen is sadly lacking, for most of the items on the menu, the answer is "sorry, we dom't have". And one would expect that a hotel of this size had wineglasses for a party of 18. They only had three. Slow, but friendly service. I will be back.

the rooms are neat and quite with AC, TV and working table. They also have nice foods at the restaurant however you need to spare at least an hour to get your food after you order. The hotel also have a quite good swimming pool.

Was going to the farm with my colleague and stopped over to have lunch. Their open Chambo fish, a delicacy fish dish in Malawi was excellent. You better try this fish when you are in Kasungu, Malawi. Just ask for open Chambo with any accompaniment of your choice. you'll love it am sure.

A very unique place in the middle of nowhere. For out in nowhere the hotel is very nice but compared to an international standard confusing and sometimes a bit unorganised. However, there is still a long way to go to an international top standard. You are not so sure what the service is doing and what they expect from you. The food is ok and you got access to a pool.
