Mbuna Bay is located in northern Mozambique, on the shores of Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi). It is the only lodge on the southern stretch of the Mozambican lake coast. Despite its remote location, at about 15 km south of the Lago District’s capital Metangula, it is easily accessible. The lodge is situated directly at a 300m sandy beach and several rocky bays and is surrounded by original bush land with huge mango and baobab trees. With only nine guest chalets Mbuna Bay offers its visitors peace, tranquility and first class comfort in an authentic African environment.

Detailed Reviews
We came without any expectations and then were blown away by the place - beautiful accommodation, warm friendly hospitality, delicious food! During our five days stay we felt at home, thoroughly looked after and cared for.
And the lake …. stunning, sometimes calm like a mirror, sometimes with huge waves rolling onto the beach. We explored it kayaking, windsurfing and snorkeling. On the narrow path along the lakeshore we could hike for hours passing through small villages populated by most friendly people.
We were thoroughly impressed by all the social projects the owners of Mbuna Bay have realized for Nkholongue and the surrounding villages: a school, a health post, a community center and presently constructing a small maternity
We’re happy to have found this place and truly hope to come back some day.

On these secluded shores of Lake Malawi, Mbuna Bay Lodge is a real discovery. A wonderful sandy beach stretches out in front of the bungalows. Sunrises and sunsets are absolutely spectacular. Authentic hospitality and excellent vegetarian food distinguish this lodge. A great place to relax after strenuous African overland travel.

As a Peace Corps Volunteer living & working in Niassa for 2 years, I already knew that Lake Niassa was one of the most beautiful spots I'd ever visited. Mbuna Bay is a showcase for the natural beauty of the beach, baobab trees and brightly colored fish. And unlike more touristy locations, it's absolutely peaceful and private. But the incredible service made me think I was in an international 5-star hotel!
But my favorite thing about Mbuna Bay wasn't the friendly staff, the beautiful beach chalet or the delicious food. The lodge has a great relationship with the community & is a great model of sustainable, responsible development. I was very impressed by our visit to the school & community center, and our conversations with the staff.
Although it's at the "end of the world," as we joke here in Niassa, I would highly recommend Mbuna Bay to anyone visiting the region!

This place is a little peace of heaven! Beautiful spot, wonderful vegetarian food, fantastic service and a brilliant approach to business with the aim of local community development. Solar energy, organic fruits and veggies grown, community involvement, all vegetarian... The list of great things can go on and on.
We went swimming at the beach and visited the village. We also went on a fabulous snorkeling trip on the lodge's dhow, with great breakfast on the boat and beautiful fish in the lake. We definitely want to return as soon as possible!

Mbuana Bay is a wonderful place located at the coast of the absolutly breath taking lake niassa. Nowhere else you can relax more and learn about the real african spirit than in Colongue. Activities like sailing-tours with fishermen, hikking-trips with local people or diving in the cristal clear water of the lake to discover the colourful glory of the aquarium-fishes gives you unforgettable memories of your holiday. The bungalows are located right at the beach with respect for the nature. The standard of accomodation and food is great. Its a no go to not go!

I would highly recommend this place. Fantastic place...just what we needed. Beautiful setting along the Lake with snorkeling gear to see many chichlids in the water. Facilities are top notch, clean, luxurious, and in good condition. Food was delicious, healthy and was more than plenty. Our hosts were very welcoming and kind, loved our tour of the local village and learning about the history of the area. On top of the great stay, I knew my money was supported Mbuna as an environmentally and socially conscious establishment and creating opportunities in the local village. Thanks for the great stay!

The Lodge was beautiful and well-equipped, and nestled into a part of wilderness that is rarely accessible. The food was outstanding. The staff are extremely helpful and engaging. The chance to snorkel in one of the most biodiverse lakes in the world is something you should do, if there.

I've seen the world and that's the place to be...
I spent a wonderful time at lake Niassa in this fabulous lodge. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in an untouched nature, combined with a romantic hotel (Swiss standard) you should definitely visit this place.
The food is amazing and I loved the informal atmosphere.
My highlights were the huge amount of aquarium fish swimming in lake Niassa and the football match with the resident villager.

I have stayed at Mbuna Bay for one week and it was fantastic! Friendly staff, delicious food and an incredible adventure in the outback of Mozambique. Kayaking, snorkeling and sailing are just a couple of activites you are able to do.
If you would like to dive into a new world, this is definitely the right place.
