We spent two nights at Ganora (12 & 13 November 2020) and wish we could have spent more. Hester is a welcoming and informative hostess, dispensing advice and knowledge about Nieu Bethesda and its environs freely. Her home becomes your home for the duration of the stay and we relished afternoon tea on the wide stoep. JP is so knowledgeable about the paleontology of the area and kept us enthralled for an hour as he displayed his astounding collection of artefacts. The room was comfortable and clean, the meals excellent and the surroundings so beautiful. The staff - Zama and Max - were friendly and ever-helpful. We'll definitely recommend Ganora to friends and family and hope to return ourselves in the future.

This review is relatively objective being my 17th road trip encompassing 18 properties over a 43 night period.

I stayed solo for 2 nights in March.

Easily found in an idyllic location from the main gravel road - farm road was in decent condition.

Friendly and efficient check in from Annika and the staff. I didn’t meet the owners.

Large, comfortable and clean room in an adjacent building, 30 seconds walk from the lovely old school farmhouse. No aircon in the room, but despite the 35+ heat it remained cool throughout due to high ceilings and the really old thick walls. The early pioneers knew exactly what they were doing!

Meals to a good standard were served in the atmospheric dining room of the main farmhouse.

The grounds around the farmhouse have been maintained to a very pleasant/high standard and were so relaxing reading a book in the shade of a lovely old tree.

Unlike other properties that advertise walking/hiking trails - these trails were clearly marked and easily followed. For those not quite so mobile I’d suggest checking that the route selected doesn’t include locked gates which have to be climbed over. I managed - just!

Decent WiFi.

The adjacent camp site looked well equipped and maintained.

Highly recommended

We decided to have a “Karoo farm overnight” on our road trip. Nothing like 30km sand road to really make you feel in holiday in South Africa.

The farm is exactly what we wanted. Awesome people with a stunning farm. Take a drive into the small town and see the fossils and local surprises.

Was a little disappointed with the dinner, really hoped for a superior Karoo Lamb experience. Also think some general housekeeping and maintenance might be lacking during Covid-19

Hi It is good to read that you enjoyed driving the 20km from the tar road to enjoy the farm. I am so sorry to hear about your opinion of the dinner. As I do not recognise your name from this review please give me a call to discuss what you really did not like of the slow karoo food we serve, so we can rectify it. We unfortunately are not a quick food outlet. We have not had any complaint but rather only good reviews of 10/10 on booking.com for our food. So please let me know which of the meals you had so we can improve. Same goes for the general housekeeping and maintenance during covid -19 you refer to. We take temperatures, spray, all our staff is scanned every morning and afternoon, rooms have a special spray and cleaning ritual and after all that and room is ready for the guests after staff had left we put the special machine we bought recently for R24 000 in each room for 20 minutes. Please let me know what more you would like us to do from our side so we can try to do more to protect our guests.

I loved the quiet, friendly setting. There are several walks accessible from the farm. The area is known for a very special geological history. The evening fossil talk provided many insights into a time period I had never heard of. The information was informative and presented in an entertaining way that kept everyone interested.
The room was very clean, the linen exceptional.
I particularly enjoyed the historical farmhouse (built in 1776) where meals were served. The staff was very helpful in answering questions and providing customized meals.

We were treated with a warm welcome on arrival. Nestled in a canyon, this Karoo farmstead boasts expansive lawns and a welcoming “stoep” (verandah). We loved exploring the farm – offering several excursions, tours, hikes and trails. Our room was comfortable and spacious. All the linen and towels were of good quality. Both breakfast and dinner were superb and made with local ingredients. Ideal for an authentic Karoo stay combined with professional yet personal service.

JP and Hester have created a special homely BnB on Karoo sheep farm just on the outskirts of Nieu-Bethesda. It a great moment in ones life when you find such authentic good people, that enjoy what they do , entertain and engage openly with guests and tell their story with such passion and energy .

Great service wonderful home cooked meals is the standard. The personal one on one time with JP in his museum full of fossils that were picked up on the farm is a treat.
Well done - we will be back .

Our hosts, the Steynberg family, were so friendly and helpful. The farm and farmhouses are beautiful. We stayed 2 nights and didn't want to leave. We will definitely come back as we didn't yet have the time to do the scenic hikes on the farm. The fossils talk by expert Mr Steynberg, and the rock art, were really interesting. Loved the farm sounds and sights around us. The cottage was comfortable, spacious and everything worked. The electric blankets and heater kept us cozy and warm. Breakfasts in the historic Karoo farmhouse and a close drive to Nieu Bethesda made this a perfect stay. I fell in love with this part of the Karoo. Highly recommended. I will go back any time.

Hester and JP are exceptional hosts. Historical sightings, delicious meals, beautiful hikes, adventurous cycling routes and very friendly staff. Can’t wait to go back!
And the quaint town of Nieu Bethesda (The Owl House) is worth a visit.

A welcome stop over. Only for one night so didn’t have time to explore the caves or rock art. Would be worth a longer visit. Refreshing pool was respite from the heat. Generous hosts, honesty bar, farmstyle cooking. Room was adequate as we had last minute booking and last available room.
