Barbara runs a very welcoming guest house diagonally opposite the must experience Owl House. Most importantly for me is that there is a inviting swimming pool after a long hot journey. The home has been beautifully restored preserving various types of solid wood floors. Quirky art and sayings bring humor to the various spaces and pool surrounds. Rooms are very well appointed.

It's the little things that makes a stay pleasant. Dark curtains, electric plugs next to both sides of the bed, rusks with the coffee in the room, enough light and shelves where make up is applied. Thanks Barbara, we enjoyed our stay!

We can't recommend the Ibis Lounge highly enough. It felt as though we were invited guests of Johan and Barbara's. The Ibis Lounge is also their home and we felt very privileged to be able to stay there. The rooms were perfect, the booking arrangements went very smoothly, our conversations with Barbara and Johan were informative, enlightening, interesting and fun. Their staff are outstanding too. Thank you, Denny.
Special mention must be made of the food, particularly Barbara's Foraging Tasting menu for dinner. We loved every bit of that meal - even though some of it was challenging to think about ... pine needle soup and ice cream with a difference! Have to say - that meal was the highlight of our road trip!
Well done Barbara and Johan, you have really created something unique and very special.

I spent a night at The Ibis in Nieu Bethesda and was very pleasantly surprised at how great it was. The guesthouse is in a charming old Karoo-style cottage and is colourfully decorated. My room was quite basic but clean and comfortable, and offered the only adaptors with USB ports I found on my holiday. I had a lovely private bathroom with both bath and shower.
The guesthouse has a restaurant on site where I had both breakfast and dinner. In good weather diners enjoy the fresh air in a walled courtyard. Though the menus are not extensive, they are certainly interesting. Barbara, the chef, is a great cook and forages wild plants to add to the menu. I had a wonderful sow thistle and dandelion pasta with roast vegetables, followed by roast garlic ice cream, which tasted much better than I expected it to!
What really made my stay though was the hospitality of the owners Johan and Barbara. I have travelled a lot and can't recall a warmer welcome anywhere. We sat out in the courtyard until late at night chatting. This really made my stay special.
The guesthouse is very conveniently situated close to the Owl House.
I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others.

Nieu Bethesda is an experience -- and the Ibis Lounge generally really enriched our stay there. It is charming, with all the amenities, including a pool which was warmly welcome in the heat. Best of all were our hosts, who run an excellent little restaurant, using indigenous edible plants from their garden and surrounding veld. The food was absolutely delicious, and in several cases unique. Delightful. Would definitely recommend it to visitors.

What an amazing stay we had at The Ibis Lounge. We had a lovely room with convenient double shower facility. Owners are friendly and very helpful with advice on what to do or see whilst in Nieu Bethesda. Breakfast was amazing - served in a cozy courtyard with the best coffee that I have had in years. The accommodation is in the main road and very convenient for browsing around this quaint little town.

The Ibis is conveniently located in the quaint little town and is within easy walking distance of most places of interest. Our room was very comfortable ...especially the beds! Our bathroom door could do with a bit of attention, as it came off the rail now and again. Our hosts, Barbara and Johan, made us feel extremely welcome and although we missed experiencing one of Barbara's dinners (only available on weekends), we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast in the morning. A truly superb stay.

We had two relaxing days in Nieu Bethesda during our trans-Karoo trip, absorbing the atmosphere as we walked around the village visiting the Brewery, Kitching Fossil Centre, Owl House, Dustcovers Bookshop and Hulabaloo - all worth a visit. We stayed at The Ibis and were not disappointed. The Karoo Food Experience dinner (mostly sourced from the local veld) on the first night was intriguing, different and very tasteful. The two vegetarians in our party were well catered for throughout our stay. The rooms were also delightful and very comfortable, the first night disturbed at midnight by the donkeys dancing on the stoep! Hospitality of Barbara, Johan and their staff was first class. A most enjoyable stay.

We had a very pleasant stay. Enjoyed the swimming pool in heat. My husband wanted juice for breakfast, no juice.
We ordered healthy breakfast, only apple pieces no other fruit, little yoghurt and very little cereal. We also had the last cereal, when other guests wanted the same breakfast no cereal available. We had the last cereal. I think even if you are a bit far from Graaff Reinette, you have to plan your week. We booked 3 days in advance. Cereals can be months in a cupboard and there is really no excuse for not having cereals or juice or yoghurt. Breakfast is included in rate and you expect a decent breakfast.

Dear Ansa We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and could cool down in our pool. We apologize that we did not have fresh juice on that particular morning for your husband. As you mentioned, we do live far from shops and hence do plan our weekly shopping very carefully. We do get last minute bookings that unfortunately could lead to certain items running out. As a small business in a small town, it is just not financially possible to keep large amounts of stock. We are disappointed that you could not tell Barbara that you weren’t satisfied with your breakfast at the time. We would have loved the opportunity to make you something else you could enjoy. Instead when asked, you were happy with everything. We also make our own cereal as we want to serve our guest the freshest meals and therefore do not agree with your suggestion of buying shop cereal and keeping it for weeks before serving it to our guests. We have a extensive selection of breakfast options and do not limit our guests to only one option. It is a shame you could not enjoy any of our other dishes. You also mentioned that we only served a small portion of yogurt. Our home made Cereal ran out, not the yoghurt. We would have happily served you as much yoghurt and fruit that you wanted. Kindest regards Johan

On the road back from December break we decided to step off of the beaten track and try a new destination and came across Nieu Bathesda. The Ibis Lounge situated at the entrance of the town came with recommendation and we were not sorry for one moment. The room we had was spacious and well laid out while maintaining that karoo charm and being well kept. The karoo heat was quickly washed off in the pool and we went exploring this new found treasure town. The service was great and friendly at all times. The food was also catered to our vegetarian needs and was delicious! The restaurant is definitely a must if you are in the area. Thanks for the stay! Will use them again!
