The sound of nature is all you will hear at this camp. No artificial noise except for trunk engines when it’s time for game drives. A truly remarkable experience and the staff are so very kind. They look out for your every need and try to focus all attention on the wildlife and create a safe space for guests and animals. Highly recommend.

Having received the warmest of welcomes, in both song and dance, things only got better! Usangu offers its visitors remoteness, a great variation of landscape environments, very knowledgeable local Guide – thank you Andersen – and a wide variety of flora and fauna. The only other folk you’re likely to bump into on Safari drives are the Park Rangers. The accommodation is outstandingly good considering the remoteness of the location – all very quietly managed by Godfrey, who sneakily arranged a surprise riverside brunch during out stay. Yes, we set up some camera traps and were pleasantly surprised when Leena showed us some of the resultant images including rarities such as an African Wild Cat and Aardwolf. I am slowly working through the hundreds of photos and am grateful to Andersen who has offered to help ID some of birds. We would happily go back to Usangu at the drop of Godfrey’s hat! We also feel extremely privileged to have experienced the wonders Usangu Expedition Camp – it is truly a real gem!

Attentive staff with gorgeous tents in the middle of a remote part of Ruaha. We had multiple stays on our Safari and this one was our favorite. You can off-road in this section of Ruaha and it is interesting to see the animals that are truly wild without having become totally habituated to humans. Highly recommend the fly camp under the stars—it was the highlight of our Safari. The team sets up a bed, prepares dinner and breakfast out in the bush along a gorgeous spot on the river. Particularly great staff include Bahati (guide), Daniel (housekeeping), and Dixon (butler). The chefs were all great as well and despite having a remote nature, this camp brings first rate service and meals to the bush. Highly recommend.

We had such a wonderful time at Usangu Expedition Camp, thanks to the amazing team led by Godfrey and our amazing guide Anderson!

We felt like the preserve was our own personnel Safari since it was so remote and untouched. We were the only car around for almost 2/3 days. On our third day, there was only one other car.

We enjoyed seeing the sable antelopes, which are magnificent and hard to find in other areas of Tanzania. We also saw so many beautiful birds and other animals. The beauty was to be able to see them in their natural habitats without 20 cars around… We learned so much about animals and their behaviors from Anderson.

One of our unforgettable experiences was our walking safari when we ran into a big herd of elephants. Our walking guide safely guided us so we could be close to them while ensuring our safety. An incredible experience!

We thorough enjoyed dinner by the camp fire and our lunch in the bush. *** Spoiler Alert below since it’s a wonderful surprise. ***

The farewell dinner was absolutely wonderful. We had barbecue away from the camp by the campfire next to at least 900-year-old baobab tree under the starry night. The team could really dance and taught us a few moves! What a fun night. Thank you everyone for a great experience.

At Usangu Expedition Camp, I found myself at the leading edge of discovery.
I was among world-class guides and staff who were all passionate about their work and eager to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. Every day brought new insights and surprises, from rare birds to interesting observations of animal behavior that were even new to me as a lifelong student of behavior. It was a particular thrill for me to see bat-eared foxes playing. Two very special experiences were night game drives and camping out in the bush overnght under the stars. I mustn't forget to mention how friendly, comfortable and well thought-out everything was and how easy it was to fall in to the reassuring rhythm of camp life.

What a magical place. Incredible location and the rooms team and food was amazing. The views from the room were something else and loved eating around the fire at night. Whilst you might not see the number of animals at more popular destinations this is a much more personal approach and makes it all the more magical. Whole heartedly recommend and it feels like we have left friends behind in the team there.

A different kind of safari! We were attracted by the remoteness of Usangu Expedition Camp and its focus on conservation and research having only relatively recently formed part of the national park. We were not disappointed with all that the camp delivered during a 4 night stay. The drive to camp from Jongomero airstrip was protected from any tsetse by the use of a specially adapted vehicle, the camp itself is tsetse free. It is a small bushcamp that exudes quality but loses none of its charm - the food, service and variety of experiences were first class. We learnt alot about, and saw firsthand, the challenges faced by the environmentalists; we saw the huge herds of ungulates - sable, topi, buffalo, zebra alongside cats, hippo, giraffe, kudu, birds galore, honeybadger, serval etc. Distances are sometimes long, and roads few but the end results well worth any passing discomfort. We saw no other vehicles other than an occasional sighting of and wave from another from camp. Our camera traps were a revelation - including wild dogs. They are all there and will, over time become a little more habituated to the presence of the camp and its few vehicles.
The camp and its team was among the best we’ve had the privilege of visiting - Asilia is a first class outfit.

This place is really special - how I think Serengeti might have been 100 years ago. The animals here are not as habituated to people as elsewhere in Ruaha and there’s few graded tracks so the off-roading can make for slow progress. But - and it’s a big but - what you’ll find are vast open spaces with huge herds of topi, roan, sable, zebra, impala, waterbuck, kudu, etc. and most importantly you’re probably the only Land Rover in sight. I learned a lot from my guide Sainingo as well as seeing birds and animals that I hadn’t seen before. And an evening game drive using a night vision app enabled us to see animals behaving entirely naturally. Another highlight was setting camera traps and viewing the results, again revealing animals I hadn’t seen before such as honey badger, civet cat, etc.
The on-site research station is well worth a visit to learn about the work being done to understand more about the area and it’s flora and fauna.
The camp itself is excellent, the staff are friendly and attentive, the tents are beautifully designed and very comfortable. The food is 5 star dining, often cooked on the open fire in front of you.
I hope to return.
