The Antbear Lodge is situated in the Drakensberg Mountains and is a perfect base to explore the very best of what this region offers. The Drakensberg Mountains are renowned for their dramatic natural beauty spectacular mountain scapes, waterfalls and sunsets. And don't forget about the bushman rock art paintings made by the San people over a period of 4000 years. Come and be inspired by their history and spirituality. Essentially we are an accommodation provider offering 15 individually styled units as either en-suite doubles, family units or luxury suites. Our most unique accommodation is our luxury cave which blends into its environment to create an atmosphere of privacy and seclusion. Glass doors open on to a wooden deck with hammock chairs with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the Drakensberg Mountains. You could even consider a romantic private dining experience on the deck of your cave under the stars. The natural setting is stunning and we have managed to make the accommodation fit in with ease. Each of the units are different and are separate from each other creating a feeling of generosity. The rooms are smartly appointed and individually designed for comfort. And have the features like fireplaces and jacuzzi spa baths. We have put a huge amount of effort into making our own wooden furniture which includes tables, chairs, headboards, windows, doors and light fittings. In fact you will discover unique and eccentric wooden furniture everywhere in the lodge. Artistic design is captured through wooden hinges, engraved glass and mosaics. And if you feel like seeing how we make our furniture feel free to put your nose into our workshop. We are one of those places where everyone dines together. It makes for great conversation and is a perfect opportunity to plan your next day. We use our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk, make own cheese. Butter and yogurt and bake our own bread. Sustainability is a huge part of the ethos of our lodge. We have used alternative materials like straw bales to build the place and use solar for heating water and a reed bed filter cleaning waste water. There is plenty to do here besides relaxing. I have a pilots license and a microlight at the lodge. If the weather is good I love to take guests with me. To glide together with the vultures or fly along the Drakensberg escarpment is often considered as the highlight of a tour. We practice the softer horse whispering techniques to train our horses and offer out rides that are particularly suited to beginners and first timers. There are hiking trails to fit every level of fitness, even guided. The vulture hides at Giants Castle are perhaps the best options available anywhere to see and photograph these birds. Or add a bit of adrenalin with a canopy tour. Visit the Nelson Mandela Capture site while you explore our local arts and craft route with cheese tastings, chocolate dipping and meeting some of the artists themselves. So if you're looking for a place where art, beauty and time away are important then Antbear Lodge is worth a second look. We invite you to came and share some of our dream, some of our alternative, sustainable and relaxed way of life. We look forward to welcoming you.

Contacted this lodge on various platforms- no response, emailed- no response, sent a WhatsApp- first no response but later eventually got a “reply”, phoned and spoke to the receptionist and was promised an email with the information I asked for- never received it. All the above to try and make a booking for the star gazing hammock experience.. needless to say, I have not been able to successfully make the actual booking but thankful as the service seems poor.

I am not quite sure how to respond to this. I am sorry you did not receive a response however it does NOT seem that we have let you down. I did check the email sent items and you have indeed been responded to 3 times by Andile. Possibly you should check your junk mail settings. The star gazing hammock camp experience is indeed something special and listening to African folktales of the stars is really something to try to include sometime in the future. This is a community initiative that Antbear Eco Lodge supports where we are helping local entrepreneurs develop their own businesses. So actually you were not even talking to us about something we sell ourselves. All we could have done was assist you and the local villager. I wish I could be more helpful than this response.

Hello Andrew , I'm sorry but We have little good to say about your establishment, first it would have been good to have been warned about the abysmal state of the road to Giants Castle and the even worse state of the first couple of k's of the road to Antbear. We arrived to meet Andile who was super and very helpful.Rooms were ok but the food was mediocre to poor ie first evening we were served a fishcake starter cold!! then tough lamb chops , Veg were good and my wife said the dessert was good . Second night starter was veg gloop - very poor but the main course of pork fillet was good. Breakfast on the first morning was served on a cold plate and on the second morning we were informed that the eggs hadn't been delivered even though the farm was a stones throw away and you

Wow. Let me start by apologizing. I see this is your first tripadvisor review so I can see that we have upset you hugely. I was unfortunately not here so its a little difficult for me to fix the issues with the food for you retrospectively. We take comments like yours seriously and I have already talked to the staff who it seems were unaware that there was even an issue. I wish you had said something to Andile at the time as there might have been something that she could have done to fix it. We generally score quite highly as reflected by other comments in this platform for our food. Also service so I have addressed that aspect with them too. We do lobby hard for road repairs and according to the local municipality the Giants Castle road will begin with resurfacing in May this year. Of course the huge amount of rain has not helped the road either. Pot holes are unfortunately something that many of us in the county have to deal with.

We only spent one night at Antbear and I am so sad we couldn't stay any longer! We had the most incredible time - Accommodation was beautiful, very clean and comfortable. And the food was out of this world. Andile was an incredible host, and nothing felt like too much trouble! We can't wait to go back!

We stayed at the cave at Antbear lodge. The owner Andrew and his staff are wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome. Stying at the cave is a unique experience and it is well equipped with a fireplace with ample wood, small fridge and kingsize bed. The cave have a private deck with great views of the river and Drakensberg. Breakfast and dinner were good. Located close to Giants Castle and Kamberg nature reserves. The road to the lodge from the N3 is gravel and in poor condition but accessible with a normal vehicle. All the woodwork and furniture at the lodge is special and very unique

We stayed 3 nights at the lodge, and we enjoyed it so much. It started with a warm welcome by Andile and handpicked flowers in our room. We stayed at no. 8 which is a very spacious, beautiful unit, with a fenced garden for our pup to play. All the woodwork is impressive, from the doors to the furniture. The fact that our dog was allowed to roam freely everywhere added so much pleasure to our stay. She met up with all the animals, and the highlight was of course meeting Angel! The circular hike is beautiful and our dog loved running in the fields and jumping in the dam. The scenery around the lodge is stunning, it is so peaceful! The first evening it was very cold, but the fireplace kept us warm. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, with lots of homemade treats. It is such a

We were fortunate to visit the Antbear Lodge on the weekend following Valentine’s Day. We arrived late (after 6pm because of huge traffic jam on N2) and it was becoming very dark. Make sure you’ll be driving in daylight, because the potholes are extremely dangerous and it’s hard to see the signs to get to the lodge. We were the only customers at the lodge that weekend and Andile made us feel very comfortable ! We were able to walk around the lodge and appreciate the wood work - wood ART - everywhere to see. The meals were nice and big portions were given. They have a « honesty bar » for drinks, which is something enjoyable, especially as it was only the 2 of us and we didn’t want to bother anyone ! We booked the luxury cave room and enjoyed the balcony and the sunsets. Keep

Thoroughly enjoyable stay at Antbear. Accommodation in cave was comfortable, well set out, secluded & quiet with wonderful views of the mountains. Loved the outside shower and sherry was a welcome night cap for the chilly evenings. Staff were fantastic. So friendly & went out of their way to make this occasion special for us. Food was delicious. All home cooked & home grown which made it taste even more heavenly. Compliments to the chef. Wood work too throughout the lodge is absolutely stunning. Only one suggestion that I could make is to perhaps includes a games room especially for those rainy days and for people travelling with children.

We travelled with our teenage sons and booked a Mountain facing chalet for Valentine's weekend. The chalet was spacious and well equipped. We had lovely home-cooked three-course dinners and a good selection of continental and hot breakfast items in the morning. The scenery is wonderful and the surrounding countryside very quiet and relaxing. The entire lodge and chalets contains woodwork (doors, windows, hinges, latches, chairs, chandeliers, statues and follies) made by Andrew, the owner. He also offers woodworking classes and holiday projects. We will be back to create something unique ourselves. Andile, the manager is very knowledgeable about the surrounding attractions and also very helpful in providing maps and contact details for excursions. In the middle of the weekend,

We stayed in the cave which was a lovely experience in itself. People must, however, be made aware that it is a MAN MADE concrete cave - we thought it would be a real cave. We had a voucher that made our stay affordable and with that discount I felt that what we paid was the right pricing. I would not pay the normal price, we feel that the normal price is way overpriced. There are no area attractions or views. There is just grass and hills. Some people will be fine with that though. It is a 40 minute drive on a district road once you leave the main road, so once you arrive there you are not going to drive out again until you go home. Even if you did drive out again there is nothing around to explore. Even though it is on the Midlands Meander it is in reality really

Hi Melanie just call us and we will make a deal. Pretty much that goes for anyone who deals directly with us. Not having to pay the agent commission is already worth a discount. Also if things are slow like during this covid period we offer really big discounts. As far as stuff to do goes you missed out that you can go on a horse trail, hike right here on the property, visit the game reserve next door, go abseiling we have an abseiling site on the property and of course mountain biking and fishing. The activity we find everybody loves is our star gazing hammock camp where a local villager tells his grandmothers folktales of the night skies. regards andrew
