The Antbear Lodge is situated in the Drakensberg Mountains and is a perfect base to explore the very best of what this region offers. The Drakensberg Mountains are renowned for their dramatic natural beauty spectacular mountain scapes, waterfalls and sunsets. And don't forget about the bushman rock art paintings made by the San people over a period of 4000 years. Come and be inspired by their history and spirituality. Essentially we are an accommodation provider offering 15 individually styled units as either en-suite doubles, family units or luxury suites. Our most unique accommodation is our luxury cave which blends into its environment to create an atmosphere of privacy and seclusion. Glass doors open on to a wooden deck with hammock chairs with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the Drakensberg Mountains. You could even consider a romantic private dining experience on the deck of your cave under the stars. The natural setting is stunning and we have managed to make the accommodation fit in with ease. Each of the units are different and are separate from each other creating a feeling of generosity. The rooms are smartly appointed and individually designed for comfort. And have the features like fireplaces and jacuzzi spa baths. We have put a huge amount of effort into making our own wooden furniture which includes tables, chairs, headboards, windows, doors and light fittings. In fact you will discover unique and eccentric wooden furniture everywhere in the lodge. Artistic design is captured through wooden hinges, engraved glass and mosaics. And if you feel like seeing how we make our furniture feel free to put your nose into our workshop. We are one of those places where everyone dines together. It makes for great conversation and is a perfect opportunity to plan your next day. We use our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk, make own cheese. Butter and yogurt and bake our own bread. Sustainability is a huge part of the ethos of our lodge. We have used alternative materials like straw bales to build the place and use solar for heating water and a reed bed filter cleaning waste water. There is plenty to do here besides relaxing. I have a pilots license and a microlight at the lodge. If the weather is good I love to take guests with me. To glide together with the vultures or fly along the Drakensberg escarpment is often considered as the highlight of a tour. We practice the softer horse whispering techniques to train our horses and offer out rides that are particularly suited to beginners and first timers. There are hiking trails to fit every level of fitness, even guided. The vulture hides at Giants Castle are perhaps the best options available anywhere to see and photograph these birds. Or add a bit of adrenalin with a canopy tour. Visit the Nelson Mandela Capture site while you explore our local arts and craft route with cheese tastings, chocolate dipping and meeting some of the artists themselves. So if you're looking for a place where art, beauty and time away are important then Antbear Lodge is worth a second look. We invite you to came and share some of our dream, some of our alternative, sustainable and relaxed way of life. We look forward to welcoming you.

We booked 5 nights at a garden facing unit that had a small fenced yard for our dog. The positives are the staff that go out of their way to assist. The scenery is decent with the snow-capped Lesotho mountains in the horizon (we were there just as a cold snap hit the area). The food is home cooked 3 course meals every evening with breakfast being fruit/yoghurt, eggs, bacon, toast with cheese, maybe a muffin, mushroom/tomato/beans. The honesty bar has a useful selection but it is expensive. The dog enjoyed walking a few different routes and swimming in a small dam. They are generous in providing firewood on a daily basis. Although some units have mountain facing views it is best to move chairs to somewhere on the lawn with an unobstructed view as there are many trees/shrubs

A dog friendly, walkers dream. All you need. We had 2 large dogs with us who did not want us to leave them in the garden to go for dinner, so dinner was brought to us without a blink. They also provided a cot for our daughter and steralised all her bottles for us. We had a berry incident on the way and our laundry was done and returned berry free. The staff are superbly friendly. The food was really good. They catered vegetarian for me without an issue. Tiramisu and boozy pears are highly recommended.

We slept @the cave in the Antbear lodge. We had a warm and pleasant welcome by the staff. The view from our sun deck was spectacular. We had a lot of privacy. The cooking was amazing and authentic. The place is almost self sufficient and good for the environment. Special thanks for the Antbear staff.

Stunning venue that I will definitely be returning to. The staff and owners are lovely and the rooms and views speak for themselves. Even when the weather wasn't on our side we had a wonderful time and returned home feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Thanks for the review. Its sometimes difficult to enjoy a holiday with pouring rain. Nobody can do anything about controlling the weather and you made the best of it.

Definitely one of our best top 2 night honeymoon destinations. If you are looking for a safe and warm place in the middle of nowhere with no cities, no cars and no people in an absolute beautiful area to just relax and let go then this is definitely the place to be! It is quiet, beautiful, amazing views, stars at night which will take you a lifetime to count, the best and friendliest client service, and care during your entire stay, thank you Andile for your friendly and warm welcome and personality during our entire stay! The most delicious and tasty home made breakfasts and dinners served! Also the most unique and interesting wood working and crafting projects and items we've ever seen! Stayed in the luxury cavern and what an experience, its warm, cozy and so comfortable!

Antbear offer was our escape. We planned a getaway to the mountains and wanted to see a thousand stars instead of streetlights. The drive was pleasant and we were greeted with friendly smiles and a room with a spa bath! I dived in before dinner and was pleasantly surprised at the set menu. After a well cooked meal and great wine it was time for bed and not before we did some star gazing. We learnt so much about the stars. The next morning up bright and early and a great breakfast time to explore the local walks. Beautiful uninterrupted views of the mountains with unspoilt terrain kept us walking till it was time to head back to the lodge. Our host Andrew came to greet us and spent time showing us the beautiful woodwork that is all over the lodge and built by himself and his

The location is perfect and this facility compliments the Drakensberg. Very unique interesting clean rooms and furniture. Lovely amenities and exactly what was sold to us. Enjoyed the animals and hiking trails on the property. This was especially nice for us being pet friendly.
